As a puppy, this breed is sensitive to overbearing or rushed training methods. He is reserved around strangers, tends to be dog-aggressive, and has a high prey drive. As a youngster, he can be timid and requires lots of confidence-building and positive reinforcement. Because he can be stubborn, he needs precise and persistent guidance. He is a little slow in processing information and may get confused if pushed too fast.

His direct ancestor is the Black and Tan Terrier which is also the progenitor of many terrier breeds. He is of the Celtic origin and a close relative to the Irish Terrier. In fact, 2 strains of this breed once existed side by side, one that evolved by the Welsh from a purpose-bred coarse-haired Black and Tan Terrier and an English type that was developed by crossing the Airedale and the Fox Terrier. The English type appears to have vanished and the true Celtic strain remained and was presented in 1885. The Welsh Terrier Club was founded a year later. The following year, the breed was awarded the championship status by the British Kennel Club. The first Welsh Terriers were taken to the United States in
Brief History: The Boston Terrier, sometimes called the “American Gentleman” can trace its ancestry from the mating of a crossbred Bulldog/terrier called Judge, which was imported to the United States from the United Kingdom in 1865. The Wire Fox Terrier has a strong, athletic body and a short, wiry coat with a soft undercoat. Although he is very much the same as the Smooth Fox Terrier in behavior, the Wire Fox Terrier does show some interesting differences. Similar to the Smooth, he is feisty, lively, and very independent, but tends to be a slightly slower learner than the Smooth, perhaps because of his more distractible nature. He is intelligent, cheerful, and gets along well with children. He is a great ratter and makes a wonderful pet. He has a very high prey drive and is more dog-aggressive than the Smooth. This dog is perhaps the most combative terrier aside from the Bedlington. He is wary of strangers, makes a good watchdog, and tends to defend himself if provoked. He likes to bark and dig, sometimes incessantly and should not be left in the yard for a long period of time. Training should begin early and be consistent. Though he is an intelligent dog, some commands such as the “down” and “come” may be difficult to teach to this willful and stubborn breed.

Izzie is a black Scottish terrier who came to live with me when she was only a puppy. To begin with, she has short stubby legs and stands with her paws pointing to the outside, rather than forward. Most of her fourteen pounds is located in her broad chest and box shaped head. Sometimes Izzie is quite demanding of my time and attention. For instance, when she wants her morning treat, she will dance around my feet and yelp at me until she gets it. Playing fetch is one of her favorite pastimes, and if I don’t take the hint, she will fling her current tennis ball into my lap. Another favorite of Izzie’s, is playing tug-of-war. She sinks her long teeth into anything and hangs on for dear life, even suspended in air. As she leaps up
