By 1836, the American colonists in the Texas territory of Mexico were having trouble with the Mexican government. However, the Texas Revolution was not fully justifiable. The three reasons the war was not justifiable are disputed land, slavery, and the rules after Americans moved to Texas. To begin, disputed land between Mexico and the United States of America is a reason why some of the American colonists moved to the Texas territory of Mexico. For example, Document 7 says that the Mexican government was taking the land of the freemen and forcing them to move out of their territory. To explain, the Texans would not follow some of the laws that the Mexican government told them about, so the Mexican government would force them to get out of
The land of Texas was initially owned by Spain, but became a part of Mexico when they won independence from Spain. The Mexican government allowed U.S citizens did they: promised to become citizens of Mexico and worshiped the Catholic Church. By 1825, 25,000 Americans lived in Texas in comparison to the 4,000 Tejanos, or Mexicans living in Texas. Americans living in Texas complained that they were used to governing themselves and resented taking orders from Mexican officials, that it was not suitable to them that Mexico outlawed slavery, and that all official documents were written in Spanish, a foreign language to them. The Tejanos complained that many settlers came without permission and showed little respect. The Mexican government then closed
After the widespread immigration of Americans into the Texas territory, the Mexican government realized their colony was very sparsely Mexican-populated, and to decrease this overflow of immigration, slavery was banned. Many Texans were angered at this supposed limitation of rights because it seemed to them as if their way of life was being purposefully destroyed. Additionally, as the fight for independence was apparently “led by the slaveholders of this country…” it was quite possible that the ban on slavery was the primary reason for several Texans to seek independence (Doc D). However, it is much less feasible that this was so because of the supposed goal, “to open a vast and profitable SLAVEMARKET,” but more possibly because they felt they were being stripped of a God-given right (Doc D). If there were Texans who sought a slave market, the greatest one existed in the United States, and so it would have been senseless to go to Texas seeking it. Instead, the bitterness of many Texans was a result of the contrast in what was considered a right in the United States, and what was considered a right by the Mexican government. Thus, a primary incentive for Texas’s independence was Mexico’s outlaw of
“The American colonists were justified in fighting a war to break away from Great Britain” To what extent do you agree with this statement?
Taxes on tea, taxes on legal documents/paper, taxes on gas, lead, paint. All these laws and more are what eventually got the American Colonists to go against Great Britain and eventually breaking away. Until 1776, the American thirteen colonies were under British rule. During the years that the colonies were under British rule, the colonists were treated extremely poorly. The British created many unjust laws against the colonists. Some of the many unjust laws were the Stamp Act of 1765, the Townshend Act of 1767, the Tea Act of 1773, and the Intolerable Acts of 1774. All of these laws eventually lead to the Boston Massacre, then The Boston Tea party, and the Battle of Lexington. All together all these events brought up to the Revolutionary War. Justify; "to show or prove to be right or reasonable". The American Colonists were justified in waging war and breaking away from Great Britain.
A man named John L. O’Sullivan says that Mexico is “...hammering our power, limiting our greatness, and checking the fulfilment of our manifest destiny” (Document A). This quote talks about how the Mexican government is affecting the Texas in a bad way. O’Sullivan also states,”Mexico never can exert any real governmental authority over such a country” (Document A). The quote is talking about California, which is with Mexico and has anger towards the government as well. A Mexican, named Jesus Velasco-Marquez, said “...when Texas and America signed the treaty, it would be considered a declaration of war” (Document C). This shows how desperate the government is toward getting back at Texas for leaving. Also “Mexico was catholic and non-slavery, while Texas was protestant and pro-slavery” (Roden 317). Texas left because Mexico and Texas had different beliefs. The Mexican government gave Texas a great reason to leave because no one can live in a country with a terrible government, and different
One reason that the U.S. was not justified in going to war with Mexico is that slavery may expand into more states. According to Charles Sumner, “Objections to the Mexican-American War,” “Slaveholders crossed the Sabine (river between Louisiana and Texas) with their slaves” (Doc D). This source is reliable because slaveholders were coming between Louisiana and Texas with slaves. On the other hand more slaves were coming to the United States. In addition according to Charles Sumner “Objections to the Mexican-American War,”
The final reason the Mexican War was unjustified was because they brought slaves over the border. The Texans crossed the borders without being invited. They also crossed the borders with unwanted slaves. (Doc D) In Mexico slaves were forbidden, or illegal, but the Texans brought they over the border anyway.
In 1836, the Texans declared its independence from Mexico. Texas had declared their independence from Mexico because the Texans had trouble being a part of Mexico and wanted their own independence because the Texans had objected Mexico’s way of governing. The Texans were justified in declaring their independence, and they were honorable men fighting for their freedom. One reason is that the government had not exactly listened to the Texans. Another reason is that the Texans should have a choice for their independence since the original 13 colonies had also declared independence when they felt they had been treated unfairly. And third, Mexico had not been treating the Texans nicely, causing the Texans to rebel. All in all, the Texans had declared
According to the Declaration Of Independence, abuse of the representative powers and their natural rights gave the people the right to eliminate their current government and create a new one. Thomas Jefferson outlines the mistakes of the British government, and asserts that citizens were restricted of natural rights. In such case, during the American Revolution, colonies had the right to get rid of their government because the king was not rightly protecting the citizens rights. Not only that, but direct taxes were enforced upon the citizens leading to acts being passed in opposition to the rebellion. All things considered, I would say that the American Revolution was justified under the Declaration of Independence.
laws and they tried to become their own. The Texans were using their colonies as judges and practicing their own laws forgetting they swore to obey their laws. And a letter Rafael Antonio wrote. When they came into Mexico they promised Mexico that they would follow all there laws and they broke all of them.
Political conflict, was a key component in multiple uprisings during the time. Economic motivations, grew to a point where it never reached prior to the Jacksonian era. Social changes, divided a significant amount of people within Texas itself. Cultural differences were notable and existed, but they took on a smaller role compared to politics, economics, and social changes. While cultural differences were present, they were not nearly enough to spark an entire rebellion. The cultural differences made it difficult to easily assimilate, but hardly impossible. The inability to quickly adjust to preceding expected cultural norms was a very unlikely reason for the rebellion. Weber, initially presents a very valid argument of the cultural differences between Anglo Texans and Mexican Texans. However, he makes it clear in his essay that despite the cultural differences, the main fight was between the Mexican Texan and the centralist Mexican government (MPTH, 139). There is more than enough evidence to support that the Texas rebellion would occur inevitably, as the discontent with the Mexican leadership rose. Consequently, it appeared that both cultures were able to coexist exceptionally. It is also leaves a curious question on whether culture assimilation, rather than cultural differences lead to the Texas
Yet another reason why Texans might have revolted was that they were trying to preserve and maintain the political values and economic gain while under the Constitution of 1824. It gave Texas a steady population flow of American migrants moving onto Texas soil. It also gave them political liberty, freedom to own slaves and a steady economic progression. But Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, president of Mexico, wished to impose a stricter rule which could also explain why Texas felt the need to separate from Mexico.
Imagine a country where the government could do anything they wanted because it was simply their “right.” The revolution was caused by a series of events which were started by the king passing taxes on the colonists and enforcing laws which were violating the civilians natural rights. There has been an argument since the war started about whether the colonists were justified in declaring independence and breaking away from their home country. The American colonists were justified in waging war for independence against Britain because the british government ignored countless formal petitions sent, the government didn’t have the right to impose taxes on the settlers, and Britain waged war against the colonists.
The Texas Revolution started in October of 1835 and ended in April of 1836. The war was fought amongst the Texas Colonists and Mexico. The reason for this war was because Texas wanted their independence from Mexico. Some of the main causes of this revolution were Siete Leyes, Santa Anna, slavery, religion, and the changes in government/power. Santa Anna, Mexico’s elected official, wanted to gain as much power as he could over Mexico.
The American Revolution was justified because the colonists were not being treaty fairy and equally by the British. And according to Jefferson, “people being oppressed have a moral obligation to rebel against their oppressors”. From the beginning, the colonists were not given the full rights as British men, just because they were not living in that country. The Navigation Acts passed by the Parliament to restrict colonial trade, and all of colonial trade with Europe had to go through England, overall they wanted to keep colonies in a position of economic dependency on Britain. And that was a serious damage in the colonial economies and people’s aspirations, it makes many colonists unhappy and smuggle goods to other country. And British
