At the Jackson State University, Walter John Payton rushed 3500 yards and scored more than 450 points. Nobody could beat his record. Payton was the youngest player ever to receive the Mvp award. Not only did Payton play running back but he played many other positions. Payton is the best running back of all time. In 1977 Walter Payton won the league's MVP award after leading the NFL in rushing yards, with 1,852 yards in franchise record. He was the youngest player to ever receive the award at the age of 23. Payton was the best running back on the Chicago Bears. So, therefore Payton was the one who was always running the ball. In ten seasons Payton rushed over 2,000 yards and ran the ball well over 3,000 times. Payton led the Bears to 9 pro bowls. Payton cried at the end of his career. Payton was best known for his pinball running style. The pinball running style is when Payton would bounce off of the tacklers one by one. Players respected Payton for taking tacklers head on. In 1987 the Walter Payton award was established. Six years later (in 1993 and 1994) Payton went into the pro hall of fame. Payton began being suicidal in the mid-1990s. He imagined him taking a gun and turning it on himself. The text states, “Pearlman cites a letter from Payton said he imagined himself killing those around him and then turning the gun on himself” (staff). Before he retired he took pain pills and liquids to help with his injuries.
After Payton retired he went to go learn about business opportunities such as real estate, restaurants, and race cars. Payton was 33 when he retired. Before Payton died he helped raise awareness for bile duct cancer. He died of a liver tumor. February 2, 1999, he found out that he had pcs, liver disease. Walter Payton died at the age of 45, November first, 1999.
