“I understand what Bert’s going through. It’s the loneliest feeling in the world - to find yourself standing up when everybody else is sitting down...Walking down an empty street, listening to the sound of your own footsteps.”.I can get whats happening to Bert. You feel more lonely than anyone else in the world. When you see yourself fighting and standing up and then see that nobody else is with you. Seeing yourself all alone with only the noise of your own footsteps to comfort you. Some hyperbole used in the quote we're “Walking down an empty street, listening to the sound of your own footsteps”. This is not to be taken literally as he is not actually walking down an empty street. Drummond says this near the end of Act I on page 51-52. He …show more content…
Other Democratic candidates like Hillary Clinton and Martin O’Malley want to limit the amount of fracking in the US but not outright ban it. I feel that this connects to the quote because Bernie Sanders stood alone in his efforts to completely remove fracking. Another good example of when someone stood alone was Rosa Parks refusal to give up her seat on a bus because a white man wanted it. Up to this date, nobody had ever been this direct to just say no to racism and make a stand. Although before this incident, she was a secretary of the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP since 1943. The lesson applies to this situation because people like Bernie Sanders and. Rosa Park at one time was standing alone just as Drummond was, fighting for the teacher who had taught evolution. Another good example would be when Drummond and Kate's stood alone to defend the teacher who had taught evolution. Drummond didn't defend the teacher just because he was a lawyer, but because he truly believed in what he was saying and that's why he eventually got the majority on his side. The lesson applies to the situation because Kates and Drummond stood alone, but eventually prospered and
In A Long Walk to Water, Linda Sue Park tells a story about one out of a thousand Southern Sudan lost boys named, Salva. Salva is a boy who ran away during the Southern Sudanese War. Salva moves from country to country to get away from this war. During the war he loses touch of his family. Salva soon escapes the war, now he’s trying to find his way to safety. He says “But the fact that they could rise to the occasion as they did, these imperfect human beings, and do what they did is also, of course, a testimony to their humanity”. Meaning that everyone has their own flaws, regrets, and weaknesses, but the ones who overcome them are the ones that help us the most. Martin Luther King Jr. is an example of someone who has stood up for humanity when no one else did. He was a leader in the African-American Civil Rights movement that used nonviolence civil disobedeance against segregation. He organized non-violent protests and delivered many speeches and because of his brave accomplishments he changed the view of segregation. A woman named Rosa Parks was also part of the civil rights movement when she refused to get up her seat in the bus to a white passenger; this story became a symbol for the racial segregation. Both Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks are prime examples of what it means when your character and destiny defines who you rather than your
Linda Sue Park wrote a novel A Long Walk to Water based on Salva's story. Salva is only 11 years old when the Second Sudanese war had started. Salva had to run away from his village, leaving his family and everything he knew. Salva has to demonstrate determination, courage, and persistence in order to survive the grueling journey to Ethiopia.
In the novel, A Long Walk to Water, the author teaches us about the effects of the war in Sudan, both physically and mentally. The rebels striked all of the people into a state of intimidation, due to how they abide by them for the most part. And if somebody does step out of line, they use violent tactics according to page 12 when the man was hid in the face with the but of a gun from the rebel. Another example of the intimidation was with the woman in chapter 3, she did seem to want to take Salva with her, but could not due to the rebels intimidation. She knew that the rebels would kill them due to the two interacting, the rebels would assume that this was suspicious. The reason why the people kept running and walking was because of the
A young eleven-year-old boy named Salva finds himself in a difficult situation during the Sudanese Civil war in 1985. To keep surviving he must continue traveling to safe places by foot. In the book, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, a young boy named Salva lived in South Sudan where there was a war called the Sudanese civil war in 1985. He walked distances to camps to find a safe place to survive. Salva survives during the war.
11 year old Salva Dut became orphaned during the Second Sudanese Civil War, when around 2 million were killed and millions were displaced (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Boys_of_Sudan). In A Long Walk To Water, a book by Linda Sue Park, one of the main themes is perseverance. The book is about a young boy who is forced to flee his village, due to a war. He meets a few people along the way, and he is faced with very catastrophic events. Throughout the book Salva learns how to deal with challenges.
“A wise man will only be useful as a man, and will not submit to be “clay” and “stop a hole to keep the wind away”, but leave that office to his dust. (Thoreau,Para.6 ,942) Because Martin Luther King Jr. and Henry Thoreau use different tones, appeals, and imagery to show how men have the power to make change. In both “Letter from Birmingham Jail”and “On the Duty of Civil Disobedience” one man took action and made a huge change in how we view different races, another man changed our beliefs on government. It all started because one man believed that it was time for a change.
The quote, “Don’t judge a man until you’ve Walked Two Moons in his moccasins” ~(Creech)~. The quote typed above demonstrates a powerful theme in the novel which shows through each of the characters. This is a theme that is placed many times in the novel, and the author makes it important. During the book, Walk Two Moons, Sal changes from upset to accepting which is demonstrated by the changes in her life, the definition of character, and the events that happen for a reason.
When war threatened villages in Sudan, so many people were forced to leave their homes and families behind. That's just what Salva had to do one dreadful day while at school. A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park is a story about a young boy named Salva, who lives in Sudan. He had to grow up with war going on around him, and had to walk away from it all. Salva even had to leave his whole family behind in trade for safety. Throughout all his struggles Salva stayed strong and has become what we know as a survivor. All the loss of his loved ones, challenges in the wilderness, and him being able to adapt to new situations are all great examples on why Salva would be considered a survivor.
Rosa Parks is an amazing example of standing up for the cause. She knew she was supposed to hand over her seat to a white man. She knew that the aftermath of such an act at that time was punishable by jail time. And she did it anyway, for the dream of equal rights to all, no matter the race, color,
The quote “…her actions open our eyes in a very powerful way to the fact that “democracy is not something we HAVE, it’s something we DO” means that with determination anyone can achieve any goals they have because nothing is free in this life, you have to work really hard to achieve them. First, Doris “Granny D” Haddock wasn’t an athlete. Yet at the age of 89 she manage to walk across the United States while many of us who are younger will fight for the closest parking spot on anything place just so we don’t have to walk. She was determined while most of us are simply lazy. Second, she didn’t like the corruption that was going on in politics; therefore she decided to take actions into her own hands rather than waiting on something else. Third,
“We don't have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in the process of change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can change the world”
The power to be to rewrite history should be out of reach. However, in 1984 by George Orwell, which takes place in a society where the government has this power. The quote, “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present, controls the past.” is a recurring theme throughout the book.
Search for Wealth “All I kept thinking about, over and over, was ‘you can’t live forever; you can’t live forever” (36). In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, universally different characters are perpetually trying to move up the social ladder of hierarchy; tearing one another down, as another impermanently moves up. As the search for wealth and power continues, people are forced to choose social status over morals. The Great Gatsby takes place in the summer of the year 1922, a time of parties and prosperity, a time notoriously known as the jazz age, or the roaring twenties.
Today, power is something strongly encouraged by the world. Get more of it; you’re entitled to whatever you want; be the best. As humans, we love to make a pedestal, putting ourselves above others around us. However, the Bible clearly depicts God’s immeasurable power that makes nothing of such earthly and egotistical ambitions. He is the one who turns hearts towards him; it’s under His authority that lame men could walk, or the dead become live again. So instead of belittling God so often as we do, we ought to humble ourselves before the Lord.
