At this time of the year, while everybody is so ready for Christmas break and vacation, I’m facing a nightmare called “tomorrow is due day". I was so relaxed and subjective the whole week that I don't have any initiative or what I'm going to write for my final paper. Suddenly, an “idea bulb” popped up in my head and lightened. I decided to explore my problem : procrastinating. After 2 hours researching in the library which seems like a decade to me, I finally found a 9-million-views speech “Inside the mind of a master procrastinator” by Tim Urban who immediately motivated me through this talk. Graduated from Harvard University, Tim Urban is now a blog-writer, also an illustrator of “Wait But Why” site where he writes posts about life, happiness, …show more content…
Likewise, Urban clarified his message of “don't let the animal control your brain because it lives entirely in the present moment he has no memory of the past, no knowledge of the future and he only cares about two things easy and fun”. With a creative and funny visual aid, his idea of procrastination are transferred fluently to the audience. Wording is the most important factors that comp I students usually skip. To make it sounds professional, students choose to have advanced language like medical term or biological name which is actually a mistake. Wording your speech clearly and comprehensibly will increase the rhetoric of the speech. If wording is too advanced and hard to understand, then writers has failed in using logos. It means, the writing won't sound logical and explicit. So this is such a great example for Comp 1 student to avail their speech.
The tone of “Inside the mind of a master procrastinator” is replaced the most since the 10th minute till the end. Tim cleverly change audience's insight about procrastination. The speech illustrate the stick figure and monkey into real life situation when there's no deadline at all. Since he asks the question “What procrastination has done to my life?”, he brings a realistic insight into audience’s mind and they change from comfortable feelings at first to serious and mindful about the problem at
Tim Urban’s Ted talk on procrastination was attention grabbing. His speaking style was successful because of many factors. His actual speech was not as well put together as it could have been, but through his personality, tone, and use of visuals, he successfully grabbed the attention of the viewers.
I disagree with Lauren Slater’s theory that throughout a person's life, one will only surround themselves with ideas and people similar to their own because, it is easy to see that people enjoy controversy and over the course of our lives, our beliefs and ideas can change.
“There is a bad side to procrastination, though, the bacteria kind, the one that if you don't clean up quickly, it will spread and fast. It gets to a point where you start seeing it in your dreams, piles upon piles of paper gliding across the room. You start to feel a shiver down your back, while you hear your teacher's voice in the background. Next thing you know, you have twenty-four piles touching the ceiling. It also may be contagious for whoever you may be around for an extended period of
Besides this omission by Kalat, he still provided an accurate and detailed account of the research article written by Ariely and Wertenbroch. This article is essential in understanding procrastination and answered throughly the three questions it posed. 1.) Are people willing to impose deadlines, with substantial consequences if they are not met, on themselves: yes. 2.) Are these self-imposed deadlines actually helpful in improving overall performance:
So staying to true form after facing the two big issues causing my procrastination I immediately began procrastinating my solving procrastination. However after two days I realized that this really was a problem that needed solving right here and now. So I began to brainstorm how I could solve my problem. The next week of the class couldn’t have come at a better time since we focused mainly on procrastination. After reviewing my notes from that class and looking to the textbook for advice, I found the solutions to my first problem to-do lists, calendars, timers, and specific study and work times with
In the first chapter of They Say I Say, it talks about the indication of "They say" which in other words mean state your ideas as a response to others. The point of this is to teach students how to interpret and reply to the writings of others. Many student needs to first learn how to originate an idea in their own writing so that they can determine what their thesis will be. The idea can be someone else’s or it can be their own idea but they need to learn the right ways of introducing these concept or ideas into their specific areas of writing. TS 13 suggests that many people must remember that when going into a conversation one must start with what others are saying about a particular topic or idea and then utilize their own opinion as
Many are rich many are poor many have money many don’t. Have you ever had a moment where you did something selfish for desperation of money and karma hit you right back with a right hook?. And felt regret towards yourself. In the short story “Why, You Reckon” the author uses irony and dialogue, to show the audience that money can't buy happiness.
From the beginning of this twenty-eight word poem titled "This Is Just To Say," the author, William Carlos Williams, clearly states his side of the narration. Readers are quickly able to realize the topic and matter of used throughout the poem. The plum seems small and useless at first but actually, plays a major role in determining the true personality of the narrator. After reading the poem, readers can clearly see the selfishness, and temptation and that drives the narrator to eat the plums that were being saved for breakfast. Mr. Williams, who is the culprit who ate the plums, is trying to ask for forgiveness in his note to the reader.
Soon, I discovered a method to avoid the potential of feeling insubstantial, if only for a few more hours or days. Thus, allow me to introduce you to an old friend, procrastination. My way of thinking soon became, “If I’m not going to get an A, then why even put the effort in?” and consequently, innumerable assignments were put off until five in the morning where it would be due in two hours or it would never reach my teacher’s hands at all. I’m sure most teachers believed the cause to be laziness or a lack of ambition, however I strongly believe that if they’d known the constant stress, self-doubt, and exhaustion that I
Attention Getter: A famous author by the name of Wayne Dyer once said, “Procrastination is one of the most common and deadliest of diseases and its toll on success and happiness is incredibly heavy.”(1) In todays society it seems as if procrastination has become a normal and acceptable thing to do. It is often joked about amongst schoolmates and co-workers around the world. Nothing seems to get done until it absolutely needs to get done, then everyone runs around getting things done quickly and often times inaccurately. The trouble with this mentality however is that some things will never get done because something will come up tomorrow or the next day and what you are putting off now gets pushed even further back. Today I will persuade you to stop this habit from continuing. I will be explaining the problems we face when dealing with procrastination as well as how to deal with it and actions you can take to prevent it in the future.
Thesis Statement: Today, I will tell you about what exactly procrastination is, the causes, and the effects.
Have you ever had an essay due in three weeks and thought to yourself, “I’ve got time. I’ll just do it later”? Does staying up studying for an exam until 3 am in the morning sound familiar? How about running to class because you were working on a project until the very last second? If any of these unfortunate situations sound relatively familiar, you have endured the horrendous event of procrastination at some point of your jam-packed life. The one secret that nobody is enforcing on your young life is the extreme power of time management. In Chapter 5, the topics we address are as follows:
“I’ll stop procrastinating…Tomorrow.” This is a mindset that is possessed by a majority of students today. Although putting off writing that English paper until the night before it is due may not seem like a big deal, it has many harmful effects. In fact, what better topic is there for that English paper? Very few are spared from the epidemic known as procrastination. Even less overcome this issue. In order to successfully defeat procrastination, we must first understand it.
Attention Getter: So I’m pretty sure everyone here has had an important assignment to complete before like a project or essay. And most of us usually plan it out where we do a portion of it every day. For example, something like this chart here. But then the next thing you know, the deadline is fast approaching and you still haven’t come close to completing your assignment. And we end up somewhere like this. Well, I believe that we can all relate to this and we have all done this to ourselves before. I’m talking about procrastination.
I found I’m not alone according to two leading experts on procrastination, Joseph Ferrari, professor of psychology at DePaul University and Timothy Phikul, professor of psychology at Carleton University 20% of people identify themselves as chronic procrastinators and up to 70 percent of students in one study said that they procrastinate. This habit affects so many and it one of the most difficult tendencies to kick but fortunately there are ways to go about solving the issue so today I would like to inform you all about why people procrastinate and the effects it can have and also ways to overcome it.
