There are four skills in learning English. They are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In mastering those skills, the student should master vocabulary first. Cameron (2001) stated that in acquiring a language, vocabulary, as one of the knowledge

Vocabulary plays an important role in learning English. Without vocabulary, the students cannot understand what they are going to read, speak even write. David Wilkins in Thornburry (2002) stated that “without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed . You can say very little grammar, but you can say almost anything with words”. From that statement, it is clear that vocabulary has an important role in language. If the students have a lot of vocabulary, they will be easy to learn English as well as in everyday …show more content…
To give the best quality in teaching English to the young learners, the teachers should know and understand them. Harmer (2001) says that unless activities are extremely engaging, they get bored easily, loosing interest after ten minutes or so. So that, the teacher should be creative to make them interest in learning English by choosing the best method in teaching. Therefore, this is a challenge for the English teachers how to make the students have fun in
First, vocabulary teaches pronunciation and the definition of words used in a particular language. If you know the meaning of a word, it is easier to use and understand when communicating. I also learned that vocabulary teaches
This gives students the words they need to know in order to communicate in a proper way. The two different types of vocabulary are oral and reading; oral is words that are used while speaking or notice when listening and reading is the words that are noticed in text. This concept is important because when children start to speak, they eventually start to understand and notice words in text. Also, it is important for them to understand the meaning of the words in order to understand the text the are reading. This is why the teacher in my class has the children become familiar with the books and reading them by going over the words and their meanings, so they can understand the story in general and they’d be able to sequence things more
Teaching vocabulary helps to open up students minds to more challenging words that may mean a word that they already know. Increased knowledge of vocabulary helps students to become better readers due to recognizing more words while reading. Being able to read with accuracy, rate, and prosody will help students better comprehend what they are reading.
Many are aware that language and vocabulary is very important to English Language Learners (ELLs), but something many are unaware of is the importance of vocabulary as an effective method of teaching ELL student’s mathematics. Success in today’s word for ELL students means understanding our society so that they can fit in. It is best said by Roberts (2009), “Mathematics tends to be a gatekeeper and a sieve for sorting students for future success, life experiences, and incorporation into society”.
Diction: Diction refers to the word choice you use in your writing. The vocab you use in your writing should compliment the type of assignment you are working on. You can write with formal diction, casual diction, or informal diction. The words you use can have a different meaning even if they are similarly defined. For example, the phrase “tearing down the trees” has more of a negative connotation attached to it instead of the phrase “cutting down the trees”. Diction’s intended effect is to impart information, ideas, or impressions and to evoke emotions and feelings from the reader.

As I sit down to finally write my reflection essay, I stare at the clock and it glares back at me, the numbers 11:24. All I can think is, how will possibly be able to finish this essay in a reasonable amount of time, so I can get some sleep. Upon further thinking, I know that sleep is already out of the question. The only thing that can keep me going is determination. This whole year I have been riding on determination and through my hard work I have been able to improve many aspects of my writing. Entering level four English next year, I feel slightly apprehensive, yet confident that my growth in expressing my opinion to the reader through adept word choice and quote integration will lead me to success.
Everyone has a different interpretation of the word, “invention”. However the word is simply defined as; a new device, method of process developed from study and experimentation. An invention is just a mental fabrication; it’s a falsehood (Dictionary.com 2013).1 Although in the essays, “Why I write” by Joan Didion, “Life in a new Language” by Eva Hoffman, and “Basmati Rice: An Essay about Words” by Audrey Thomas, each author has their own view on the English language, how they each began inventing their own writing styles, and also their reasons for why they chose to become writers. These are the three things that make their definitions of invention very particular and their own.
Although vocabulary is the sub-skill of a language, it plays a very important role in language learning and teaching. In fact, vocabulary is central to language and is of paramount importance to language learners. On the other hand, words are the building blocks of a language that are used to label objects, actions, and ideas. In other words, people cannot convey the intended meaning without knowing vocabulary. It is widely accepted that vocabulary is a very important part in English language learning because no one can communicate in any meaningful way without vocabulary. As McCarthy (1990) stated, the single, biggest component of any language course is vocabulary. Nation (1990) also affirms that vocabulary can be considered as the most important element in language learning because Learners think that many of their
The purpose of the study is clearly stated. It aims to find out how to help language learners foster vocabulary acquisition. This leads to a clearly stated research question that presents a ground for the study - whether it is possible to classify tasks according to their effectiveness in vocabulary acquisition.
A research that was done by Septiasari (2004) at Natya Language Service and Program in Surabaya shows that the method of teaching and learning which is focused on fun learning can facilitate the learners to create good interaction between them selves and also
English has undergone some changes in relation to its status in the world. Some years ago, it only became the first or second language for several countries. Nowadays, alongside with the development of information, communication, and technology the status of English becomes a lingua franca in the world. That is, a language that is used as a means of communication between people with different language. This change, of course, brings some impacts in the roles of English as a language. English is not seen as a language for identity anymore. Yet, it functions mainly as a means of communication. Added to this, the change of the English status as a lingua franca will also impact to the educational sector especially in English Language Teaching (ELT). With regard to this issue, this paper tries to present the notion of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and its implication to the teaching learning process especially in Indonesian context.
Vocabulary plays a significant role in English as second language learning process. For the majority of English as Second Language(ESL) learners, the ultimate goal of learning the language is to understand (read and listen) and communicate (write and speak) with little difficulty and the lack of sufficient vocabulary may be the constraint of such goal (Folse, 2004). As the bedrock of English and as well as language, vocabulary also facilitates the development of other language skills: lexical richness leads to the progress in the use of language, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing skills (Nation, 1994). Reversely, The improvement in such skills may enhance learners vocabulary size as the exposure to more learning materials improves the capacity to acquire new vocabulary. (The importance of learning vocabulary/ why vocabulary?)
As far as humans know, we all think in words. Over the millennia, the complexity of human thought was expanded through the acquisition of language, and groups of words were created which the English language called “vocabularies”. In conjunction with the randomness of thought, words were used to provide labels or act as symbols for the tangible or emotional concepts humans truly wanted to express. When asked by King Henry why he put labels onto everything to justify his feelings, Thomas Becket replies, “Because, without labels, the world would have no shape” (Anouilh 16). This essay will analyze this and other claims.
In teaching and learning English, there are two aspects that should be concerned. The first one is the language skills such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The second one is the language components such as vocabulary, and grammar. These two aspects are taught in order to make the students achieve the ability in communicating both in spoken and written forms.
