Violent Behavior: Article Analysis

Violent video games, movies and television shows have become the subject of large debates that may have lasted since the beginning of media. Everyone knows that people have the ability and desire to imitate what they experience in the media, and given the perceived increase in violence among children in the U.S., the media is seen as a major possible explanation. In the following, we will examine the evidence pertaining to whether the media is becoming more violent over time, how much violence is in the media, and what kind of psychological connection or causal influence there may be between children’s violent behavior and their favorite types of media. It will be argued that the type of media as well as other cultural and environmental factors, are the key variables in determining whether violent behavior was caused by media, focusing specifically on the influence of video games considering they permit children the most realistic and interactive experiences of violence compared to all media.

The media is one of the main elements that influences on aggressive and violent behavior in adolescents. Many researchers have revealed that adolescents spend hours in front of the television. However, violence in movies may convey that the superheroes negative physically and verbally aggressive behaviors are being considered cool, which makes them a role model for adolescents. This kind of violence in television demonstrates to older children and adolescents that is okay to have that behavior, since the characters in a movie are being rewarded for their behavior. It has been suggested that exposure to media violence from an early age desensitises children to aggression and normalises aggressive behaviour (Eron, 1982). Television violence and aggressive acts may promote aggression as a behaviour that helps individuals to achieve their goals.

There has been far-reaching research on the link between televised violence and violent behavior amongst adolescents. Current studies have shown a direct correlation between aggressive conduct and watching violence depicted in many media services and suggest that media is a variable that put children at risk of aggressive behavior (Huesmann, Moise-Titus, Podolski, & Eron, 1992). According to the American Psychological Association, watching playing violent scenes them on games and television, can desensitize children to the suffering and pain of others and may be a greater risk of acting aggressively toward others and they're less bothered by violence in general and less likely to see anything wrong with it. As technology has evolved so has the way we, as a society, consume media. If we look back through history, we can see violent imagery portrayed in books and art. However, after some violent school shootings, people have attempted, and failed, to pin the blame on violent media and even predict if, and when, it will happen again. However if we look at the violent tragedies, and more specifically the people who have committed them, we can see other causes for this violence. Although it can cause issues, violence in media does not cause violent behavior because violence is an accepted part of society, not a single study has predicted shootings, and other factors, such as mental health, are to blame for violent behavior.

Media violence is not the factor in violence today. Studies show that over 90% of homes have a television which is argued to be the cause of violence because kids are spending up to 28 hours a week watching media and being on social media as there is more phones in houses then televisions, which 28 hours a week is more time then kids spend in school. Based on this factor it is discovered that most of the homes in the study have a TV located in children’s rooms were it is unsupervised to be able to watch shows that display violence. Research has also displayed that younger children can’t differentiate between fact and fantasy so they look up to people as role models in shows and movies to determine what’s “cool” in society. There is also research stating that music videos and video games display at least 15% of violence but there is little data on violence when it comes to music and video games and social media on the internet to being a broad range of what you can find on the internet that displays an act

Television is a powerful tool, shaping and influencing the lives of the world’s youth. More recently, violent shows are on the rise. Most programs are increasing the number of violent acts per hour. These violent television shows are causing an aggressive spike among young people. Violent television shows are desensitizing children to violence, leading children to imitating the actions of those they see.  This problem can be reduced or prevented in numerous ways.

Almost every family has televisions and smart phones, which makes children have greater access to media nowadays. Although TV is a great tool for education and entertainment, it is adverse to children’s development in some ways. There are greater numbers of violent scenes in TVs and films that are viewed by children. Some parents may probably think those TV programs and movies are just for entertainment and will not cause any bad consequence. However, it is worthy of attention that children’s minds are not well developed and will be easily affected by things they are exposed to. So, the impact of media violence on children should not be neglected any more. Violence in the media actually exerts a subtle influence on children’s behavioural and emotional problems.

There have been previous studies done on the link between television violence and aggression in adolescents. In the article, “Connections Between Violent Television Exposure and Adolescent Risk Taking”, authors Marina Krcmar, University of Connecticut Department of Communication Sciences, and Kathryn Greene, Rutgers University Department of Communication use a survey to assess television viewing and risk-taking behaviors in 717 adolescents ages 11-22. The authors explain that research has established adolescence as the period of initiation of and experimentation with much sexual activity, smoking, delinquency, and drug and alcohol use, so adolescents are a particularly interesting group to consider when examining the link between watching violent

Television is one of the biggest influences in the lives of most people. People spend hours every day watching television programming, so of course this will affect their behavior. Television is like a window to the modern world. Many people view the programs that are aired on television; they can gain a lot of information and knowledge. Most programming like the National Geographic and Discovery Channels can be used as an educational tools in schools and at home to teach our children to learn instead of reading books. Unfortunately, some programs that are aired may be unsuitable for general viewing as they may contain too much violence and bloodshed. Many crimes that are committed by juveniles are believe to be caused by their excessive viewing of violent movies. Television viewing has its advantages and disadvantages. People have the right to choose what to watch and nobody is to blame if they pick the wrong program. Obviously, the effect of too much violent television is usually negative for children, and some of these perspectives will be discussed in this paper.

Violence in the media will never be stopped as long as the society spends more time on violent movies and video games.

"Aggressive behavior" is considered the primary result of children who watch violence on the television. "Aggressive behavior" may be influenced by many other things, but the television has been proven, through many studies, to influence this behavior.
