Violence accounts for 1.4 million deaths each year and most of them are because of appearances of people. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is a book about two gangs (Socs and Greasers) who have a negative relationship. This negative relationship leads to violence such as fighting and even stabbing. This happens because of the appearances of the gang members. If someone would dress as a greaser and walk up to a group of socs they would probably get beat up. The author S.E. Hinton wanted to address the readers that you should not judge someone by the outside of them and not use violence as the answer. Violence plays a big role in this book and the author used violence in the book to tell the readers that violence is not the answer to anything.
In the book the Outsiders, Ponyboy faces many conflicts, some had carried more significance than others. The author of this novel is S.E. Hinton. The main characters of this novel are Ponyboy Curtis, Sodapop Curtis, and Darrel Curtis (Darry). The Outsiders is novel about the wars between the two social classes formally known as Socs (The higher class/richer people) and the Greasers (The lower class/poorer blue collar workers.) This novel however is told from the perspective of the Greasers, more specifically a young boy at the bottom of a small gang or family of greasers. In the novel The Outsiders the character Ponyboy experience multiple conflicts with his family, his friends, and the law.
In the novel The Outsiders, the act of violence negatively affects the plot of the entire book. First, Dally's dying had an important role in altering the tone of the book negatively. For instance, the text states “Dally didn't die a hero”. He died violent and young and desperate, just like we’d know he’d die someday. [Hinton 154]” The text displays the fact that Dally risking his life just for Johnny's dying led to his dying not being remembered positively.
In the novel “The Outsiders,” author S.E Hinton hints to the reader that there are a lot of choices within the book from beginning to the end. From the East side with the rich, cruel and mean Socs to the West side of town with the Greasers where Ponyboy and the gang live. The gang must choose to save their friends despite the consequences, they must turn to each other for help, and they must decide to return home in order to face what they have done and the damage that has occurred. These choices though hard, help the Greasers learn about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.
In today’s world there are people that commit violent crimes every day. Violent people all over plan horrible things to do to public people such as a shooting in a school, a store, or an airport. Not all people are violent but there are many violent people in the world, people go through horrible things and it can alter their brain to think differently and violently. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton contains a great deal of violence throughout the story, violence is a lifestyle in the main character, Ponyboy, and his gangs lives. Violence is something most people want to avoid; although, some try to bring violence to society.
The quote “Conflict creates action, and action defines character” means how a simple conflict will lead to an action and depending on how the action is dealt with and is how people will “look” at the character. Conflict means a controversy between characters. The Outsiders is narrated by Ponyboy and his point of view, he is fourteen and apart of the Greasers. Darrel is 20, and Sodapop is 16, The three of them are brothers, they recently lost their parents in a car accident. In the beginning and in the end Ponyboy describes Paul Newman’s characteristics and how “perfect” Ponyboy thinks Paul Newman’s life is.
S.E Hinton the author of The Outsiders wrote an astounding book that remains popular to this day, a story that has influenced people for almost fifty years and will continue to be a classic for years to come. We follow ponyboy a 14 year old boy from Oklahoma, who lives with his two brothers Darry and Sodapop and their “gang” the greasers as they deal with rumbles, run ins with the “fuzz”, the Socs, and the realization that problems occur no matter who you are.. In the city that they call home the division between two “ gangs” the Socs who live on the west side and the Greasers who live on the east is the most problematic conflict in the story . Although the two groups don’t seem to get along, they soon discover that they are more alike than
The Outsiders is generally centered around violence-it literally drives the action. The book showcases gang fights, abuse, the carrying of weapons, and much more. The Socs in particular are exceptionally violent people. They jump greasers for the heck of it, carry rings, and never get in trouble for it. They have forced greasers to carry some sort of self-defense mechanism every where they go and they left them scared to walk alone. They gang up on one or two or even rumble within their social clubs. They beat up Johnny real bad, too. “They had caught him and one of them had a lot of rings on his hand-that’s what had caught Johnny up so badly,” [41, Hinton]. However, Socs still get all the breaks, they don’t get
Is violence always the answer in a bad situation? Although the characters in The Outsiders are surrounded by violence and abuse they believe that fair fights aren’t really violent because it is just a part of growing up on the East Side. Through this analysis, it will be shown that Johnny is always surrounded by violence but also his gang. It will also be shown that nothing stops him from being himself especially when life gets hard for him and he has no one to come to.
Violence//Outsiders Do you think of yourself as a violent person? If you were in the novel The Outsiders, you would probably be violent. People used weapons, got into fights, and got arrested. The characters in Outsiders got in fights and used weapons. They use switchblades to protect themselves during the novel.
As we all saw in the Outsiders, Johnny was abused physically and mentally. There are so many kinds of child abuse, or abuse in general, that we may not know we are being abused. Abusing isn’t only in actions, but in words and feelings too. Physical abuse is when someone non-accidently hurts you in a way that doesn’t make you comfortable or makes you feel that you are more of a slave than a human.
“The struggle you’re in today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow.” The Outsiders is a novel by S.E. Hinton about a group of boys who face many challenges and hardships together. The novel is based off adversity and how although it could have negative impacts it could still bring some positivity like finding the real image of actions, overcoming fears, and bringing a family together.
The main theme of The Outsiders is violence does not solve social conflict. In the beginning of the book Ponyboy thinks that violence is the solution to the Socs, but later through Johnny stabbing Bob, and finally making amends with Darry, Ponyboy figures out that you can’t solve social conflict with violence. This theme was relevant to the real world in Hinton’s time and still is today.
Society has had issues with violence through all of history and still today. There is violence seen when they talk about Johnny and his home life. Pony was explaining to Cherry how Johnny got hurt and why he gets scared easily. Ponyboy stated, “We were used to seeing Johnny banged up — his father clobbered him around a lot. (32)” This shows how violence could affect someone’s life in a negative light. Secondly, the socs and the greasers rely on each other to survive one the streets and today’s gangs now rely on each other too. On page 59 to 62, Dally helped Johnny and Ponyboy like family because he helped them when they needed it the most. This sounded like the gangs now and how they give advice to the people that are in trouble. Lastly, the greasers believe that fighting is just a way of life. Dally relies on violence because that’s all he knows. His parents didn't care about him and with a very violent world, he goes to jail at ten years old. With that, it created a person that lives for violence and crime. For instance, people today still think that violence is the answer to everything. ISIS an Islamic terrorist group terrorizes people because they want their point across. Why can’t people just resolve things peacefully? Humans should speak their mind verbally, instead of physical harm to innocent people. Both in the book and in today's society, people use physical harm to solve problems and that creates an issue of
I am discussing the book the outsiders by S.E Hinton and analyzing the impact violence has on the main characters. My main aim of this essay is to assess and demonstrating the emotional and physical damage to the characters Johnny, bob and Dally caused by violence.
In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton shows that fights create more violence and can even lead to tragedy. The narrator Ponyboy, a greaser was scared for when Johnny got jumped Ponyboy reflected on his feelings in chapter 1, “I had never been jumped, but I had seen Johnny after the after four Socs got hold of him, and it wasn't pretty. Johnny was scared of his own shadow after that. He was sixteen then.” (Hinton 4) This quote is an example that fights and violence can lead to tragedy because after Johnny had been jumped by the Socs he was terrified and scared of his own shadow. He had to start walking with a group of people. This also happened at an early age so Johnny was scared after a while, “ he was scared of his own shadow after he got jumped” This scene had me thinking about Johnny in the beginning of the book because he was only young and was just walking home and was jumped and attacked by four people scaring him for the rest of the book.
