The Starry Night The sky swirls in an intense pattern like a wave. A tall cypress tree reaches to the heavens as the sky whirls around its highest branches. In the distance a little dutch church points upward with its long steeple. The night sky is dazzling with colors from the yellows of the moon, Venus, and the night stars. The uniqueness of this art work and the imagination of the artist allows the viewer to gaze from a different outlook digging deeper into the artwork and their own life. The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh inspires thousands of people and artist alike every day leading them to take a new look at their lives and the world they live in from a different creative perspective. Van Gogh, the artist of this famous work, quickly painted this work with a heavy oil paint on canvas. His use of thick brushstrokes and deep layers of paint reaching from the canvas begging for attention from the viewer. The thickly layered brush strokes allows contrast for a simple technique used in this work. The thick impasto and bold colors helped further this contrast Gogh strived to achieve. Vincent Van Gogh wanted to express the energy and imagination buzzing around his head. The impasto technique used on the canvas helped show the quickness this painting was done. The painting is summary of his life as this was painted towards the end of his time. Van Gogh needed a way to express his thoughts and energy while he was staying in an asylum. He had his art supplies and began to paint off of memory. Using art as his way to escape the real world gogh found himself painting his imagination and energy. Both of these put together with the use of thick paint strokes and swirling colors help express what he was trying to
