The Starry Night is an oil on canvas, landscape painting. It was painted by a Dutch, post-impressionist painter named Vincent Van Gogh. The paintings measurements are twenty-nine inches by thirty-six and one-fourth inches, and was painted in June of 1889. At the time it was painted, Van Gogh was staying in an asylum at Saint-Remy-de-Province. He painted the view from his east-facing bedroom window, just before sunrise. Today, the painting can be found at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

He used textual rhythms and bold colors to express his intense feelings. The stars and sky in the painting, shows an emotional intensity by using a variety of strokes and colors making it all coming together to form a spiral-like mist in the center, drawing your attention to the sky.
There are eleven yellow stars which looks like fireballs that light up the painting, and contrasts with the cool blue, night sky. The view of the night sky and village is partly blocked by a huge flame-like cypress tree in the left foreground. Vertical lines such as the cypress tree and a church tower break up the composition without taking away from the night sky.
Some people think Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most loved artists in the art world today. Some see him as a troubled, but a successful artist, who had one ear. But in his day, he lived in an insane asylum, and no one would talk to him. He was taunted by children and got run out of villages by people who feared his erratic behavior. All of his passion and emotional expressions went into his painting. People may look at his art work and love it for the colors or textures, the mere beauty and surface of the painting.
