The Vietnam War During the 1960s and 70s Americans were fighting a horrific battle in Vietnam resulting in countless deaths and hundreds of violent protests. On November 1, 1955 America joined a war against the Viet Cong; the war didn’t end until April 30, 1975. Lasting 20 years, the Vietnam War caused the deaths of almost 60,000 Americans and over 150,000 injuries. The 60s and 70s were home to much chaos including the Vietnam War, violent protests against war, as well as the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. The Vietnam War (1955-1975) was composed of the communist regime of North Vietnam and the Viet Cong against South Vietnam and their ally, the United States. Kennedy addressed the public about the Soviet missile and his decision to create a blockade around Cuba and use military force if under the correct circumstances. This created chaos across America leaving many people in fear of a nuclear war. Fortunately, Nikita Khrushchev, a Soviet leader, offered to eliminate the missile in Cuba if the U.S. does not invade Cuba.Fidel Castro gained power of the island of Cuba in 1959 and joined the Soviet Union. Cuba relied on the Soviets for aid in their military and their economy. Because of both political and economic differences the U.S. and the Soviets were in the middle of the Cold War(1945-91) at this time.On October 14, 1962 a pilot of an American U-2 spy plane photographed a Soviet missile being assembled while flying over Cuba. This alarmed American officials because nuclear missiles were being installed just 90 miles from the coast of Florida. This missile could have changed the rivalry between the two countries which America was dominating.Nikita Khrushchev thought that if he deployed the missiles they would become even with the other countries targeting them like Europe and Turkey.
