Packed into the basement of University Hall, every Thursday night students at New York University gather to play what was once a children 's party game. Rows of old CRT’s are taken out of closets and hauled downstairs and players unwind their trusty controllers. Soon the soothing click clack of Gamecube controllers fills the air as everyone begins to warm up for the bracket that night. These players are fans of Super Smash Bro’s Melee, a tight knit community of dedicated gamers.

In 2013, there was a shift in the Melee world. A new meme arose, the year 20XX, originally the year Megaman was set in, it evolved on it’s own within the melee community. As Hax puts it “The year is 20XX. Everyone plays Fox at TAS levels of perfection. Because of this, the winner of a match depends solely on port priority. The RPS metagame has evolved to ridiculous levels due to it being the only remaining factor to decide matches.” (Al-Yami) TAS or, Tool Assisted Superplay, is when players use computer assisted tools to input actions in 1/60th of a second windows, allowing them to surpass the level of play achievable by normal humans. Even though this level of speed may seem unrealistic, players push closer to perfection every year. Caught up in this wave Hax completely dropped Captain Falcon as his main and switched to only playing Fox. Conversely there are those that believe in the other characters. These self-proclaimed defenders of 20XX work to optimize the kits of other characters in hopes of keeping character diversity, and the Melee scene alive. According to the Melee power rankings, a list that keeps track of the rank of current players, three of the top five players currently don’t use fox as a main. Video games are a big part of life in modernized countries. It is one of the biggest entertainment money makers and of the things people enjoy doing. They are now mostly played inside the comfort of your home, with a console or computer. But things weren 't always like this. About 40 years ago you would most likely go to the arcade to play. The consoles they had out were either expensive or not good enough to compete with the arcade ones. Classic video games were made with 4-bit pixels and in very low resolution than modern day games. Over the decades, game machines continuously evolved and become more and more powerful, capable of stunning visuals and graphics. In the 21st century, social media, smart phone and tablet technology entered the gaming scene. Casual games become the norm attracting previously non-gamers into the market. However, if those low-quality games were never made, the games would not have evolved into the games they are today. Every year more and more gaming companies get gobbled up into huge conglomerates like Electronic Arts, companies that mostly put out trash that is technically and visually impressive, but devoid of concept and content. While mostly just small groups of programmers and artists, some are huge unions of fans who, irritated with the dropping quality of computer games, have decided to use the power of the internet to get together and to produce games tailor-made to their personal preferences.

Throughout history man kind has always searched for ways to entertain himself, each time developing new activities and games. Video games have become a very popular way to spend time and have fun from the 1970’s up to now. With new developments appeared different video game genres from adventure to racing, but the violent video games appear to be the most popular ones (Shin, 2003), for example: shooters, fighting and video games where you have to eliminate, destroy, or kill your enemies.
Imagine a large arena filled with two competitive teams. The tension grows and finally, one team prevails and is greeted by stupendous amounts of cheering.
