Over the last decade or so we have seen our country fail our Veterans on so many different levels. The U.S. Governments treatment of our Veterans has come under fire because so many of our Veterans are not being adequately taken care of. Some would say this is a mere oversight in our government, but to me it is a lack of ethics. Menzel defines “Ethics as values and principles that guide right and wrong behavior.” When we look at the landscape of our Government beginning with the Executive office we see a lack of leadership in my opinion. The President of the United States should be the biggest advocate for our Veterans. As a nation, we need to be thankful for our veterans. The men and women who join the military undergo nine weeks, or more, of boot camp. That right there is said to be the most laborious nine weeks of anyone’s life. Drill sergeants break them down both emotionally and physically, so they can improve upon them and make them stronger. Those are the people we should be thanking, the ones who fight to preserve our country’s freedom, equality, and the pursuit of happiness. Those are the fundamentals of our Constitution that those people fight to protect. However, after their service, it doesn’t seem like people know that.

State and federal legislators both need to make it a priority to be involved in the welfare of veterans. The issues will never get better unless the individuals in charge of the laws, regulations, funding and departments step up to the challenges. That alone will not even be enough. These issues need to be addressed on a state level as well. Housing projects and professional training need to be made more widely available. Understanding the importance of both changes made at a state and federal level for the living conditions and health status of American veterans is the first step. Dictionary.com’s definition of the Department of Veterans Affairs is, “The second-largest cabinet department, the VA coordinates the distribution of benefits for veterans of the American armed forces and their dependents. The benefits include compensation for disabilities, the management of veterans' hospitals, and various insurance programs.” My sister, Keara Torkelson, is a retired US Army Veteran. Every time she takes a trip to the VA’s office, she only comes out less and less satisfied. However, the VA’s office isn’t the only place Veterans are neglected.

Does the government support or fail the veterans that have come back home? Veterans who are in uniform have a hard time transitioning to civilian life. Citizens believe that the government, like the Veteran Affair(VA), is helping veterans while others believe that the government has not made any improvements or adjustment to help the veterans in need and how the citizens of the world were right. The research will prove what the government is really doing for our veterans.

In today's society where opinion matters, people have been extremely vocal about the lack of support the government has provided to our veterans. Many feel as if the government should do more, while others feel as if they are doing enough. Everyone will have a difference of opinion no matter if they have severed in the military or not. No matter how one may feel, is extremely important to take care of our veterans. As they have sacrificed their lives, time, and family to protect our country. Contrary to one's belief, the government provides a substantial amount of programs, which support the veterans. Honestly more could be done. On any given day you could see women and men standing on the corner holding signs implying they are homeless veterans and will work for food. A few programs the government offers our veterans are funding for mental health services, The Wounded Warrior Project and Vocational Rehabilitation and Education, which will be discussed throughout this essay. When you research the programs, they make it sound as if all proceeds are going towards the best treatment and care money could buy.

The VA System needs a complete over all we are doing a terrible disservices to our veteran’s.

What some the “symptoms” of veteran’s rights look like in regards to how they are addressed, are in multitude. They range in length from health care, education, to basic family needs. This is like a bomb waiting to go off: Family of veterans have to live with fear, hoping that their love one would recuperate, be happy, or simply a civilian again. The Veterans Affairs Department (VA) should put a better effort to better assist veterans, and their family with a better plan to reduce this preventable death. Living in America, the land of the free, I have taken the right of freedom for granted a few too many times. To this day, certain populations around the world are not able to enjoy the right of individualism. Many are oppressed by their country’s strict law due to a primarily focus on male dominance, child labor, and female oppression. Obtaining freedom is never easy. It takes honor, courage, and commitment. Fighting for freedom is an ironic concept because soldiers must be willing to sacrifice their own. Even after knowing this sacrifice, we still have brave individuals who volunteer to put their lives in harm’s way for the safety and insurance of our freedom. All military veterans make sacrifices, and fight courageously for our freedom. They protect our beloved county from disastrous peril. Veterans are one of the only reasons that we are safe, allowed to do what we want, and have free agency. They deserve to be honored and respected as amazing people who put aside everything for the country’s needs.

Every year the United States of America send a total number of 22.7 million men and women over the age of 17 overseas to fight for the protection of the country (Veteran Affairs, www.va.gov). That is 22.7 million sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, and other extended family members. When their service is complete many of these war veterans return home to their families, but some have no families to return too. On any given night, there are over 107 thousand veterans sleeping homeless on the streets of America; hungry, thirsty and without shelter (Veteran Affairs, www.va.gov).
