Cause of Disease
Smallpox can be caused by two different viruses called variola major and variola minor. The most deadly out of the two is variole major and it is estimated that 30% of the people who get the disease die. However, variola minor is a lot less deadly and causes death to around 1% of people infected with the disease.
Transmission of Smallpox
The main reason to why smallpox is so dangerous is because it is an airborne disease meaning that it can be spread by coughing and sneezing and therefore can be spread quickly. The transmission of smallpox can also occur due to direct contact with any bodily fluids including blood as well as sharing or touching contaminated surfaces.
