Since my visit to UM two years ago, I have imagined being a part of its culture of diversity and its campus full of amazing facilities. Through a college education there, I know I can place my studies in a bigger context that includes multicultural perspectives, global human and environmental needs, the role of technology and creativity, and service to our

Throughout my life I’ve wanted to be everything ranging from a ballerina to a surgeon, but the job that I can truly see myself doing is working abroad in women’s rights. When I started my college search, the first thing I looked for in a school was a program that allowed me to pursue both my interest in foreign studies and women’s rights. Tulane offers extensive programs abroad and through the school that would allow me to pursue my interests in women’s rights and international studies; however, why I want to attend Tulane doesn’t just lie with the majors offered. The reasons I am drawn to Tulane comes down to three things: the location, the diversity of the school, and the importance Tulane puts on social action.
It was assumed when choosing to go here that I would be provided with a comprehensive education that gave me proper career preparation, as well as the traditional general education expected from a four-year university. Central to UW Oshkosh’s mission is its commitment to providing a liberal education to every student (University of Wisconsin Oshkosh). To see how the University addresses the challenge of creating graduates that are career ready, while still staying true to their mission of providing a liberal education, I consulted University literature, faculty, and outside sources on liberal arts education. Through this research, I came to understand how UW Oshkosh integrates both workforce development and liberal education in its individual courses, programs, and overall degree
One of my primary objectives for returning to school is to explore other ideas, perspectives and approaches. I want to discover and understand alternative processes, in addition to, examining conventional and traditional social infrastructures. I’ve held various positions throughout my life journey and I’ve learned to glean the positive aspects and facets from every position. My personal history has offered me many experiences and enhances my observations and perspectives, as well as, genuinely enriches my appreciation for exploring. In my midterm years, after many life challenges and successes I completed my A.A Degree.
Going to college and being in a university setting was the first time my perspectives and ideas were broadened. I was able to see the world outside my small suburb, and learned harsh realities, which I was sheltered from my whole life. Social justice advocate, Bryan Stevenson, expounds the idea of getting proximate to issues that one cares about. For me, getting proximate was accomplished by being on a university campus, and learning from the ideas of others, as well as new, first-hand experiences. As I was supported and encouraged in my growth at Loyola, I want to provide the same assistance for other students. Through my years I have excelled at organization and coordination, skills that I hope to apply in order to help students in a university setting. More so, I want to help support students who enter college, those who wish to expand their knowledge, viewpoints, and minds. Higher education would offer me a unique opportunity where I would be able to support students in their growth as a person, while offering encouragement and assistance to students throughout their college
Wayne's M.S.W. graduate students undertake the task of improving, spreading, analyzing, and utilizing the information learned through courses and field work to better the lives of disadvantaged individuals, families, and communities. Through hands-on experience within vulnerable, oppressed, and poor societies, they develop social welfare policy for urban communities. By committing to an intense graduate program, I expect to broaden my skill set and expand my ability to assist those in need. My leadership skills have found me, time and time again, standing up for the rights of the underprivileged groups. I am creative and can often think of out-of-the-book solutions to social problems.
College. The word alone sends an icy chill down my spine as my mind wanders and dreams of the day that I will finally step foot on an enlightening campus. As a curious child and even more inquisitive teen, I have always been, and continue to be, mesmerized by the glossy college pamphlets with perfect photos of students, posing “naturally” in their science labs and English seminars. I always knew college was for me, as at the age of seven I began planning out my future major (and minors). Of course, my ideal university and course of study has changed over the years, yet the idea of college has continued to fascinate me. The core principles of any given college are most likely related to collaboration, a rigorous education, and diversity, which

I am very excited to apply to Laurentian University. After much research, I could not think of a better school to receive an education from. As someone who is very interested in continuing my education from a distance, I love what LU has to offer to me and believe that I am able to offer much to it. After working with an orphanage and a women’s shelter while on an exchange program, I have realized that being an advocate for those who are unable to speak for themselves is something that I am passionate about and would love to pursue a career in. The online sociology course with a minor in women’s studies through Laurentian is exactly the course I am looking for to help me achieve my goal. There are many pros to taking online courses but also many cons. However, I believe that through the flexible schedule and the accessible help that Laurentian offers many of the con’s have been avoided. This proves to me that LU truly does put the education of their students first and I am confident that this would allow me to reach my fullest potential. After completion of this course, I plan to use my acquired knowledge and skills to help the
I decided to obtain my Bachelor of Arts degree at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, N.S. where I double majored in Criminology and Sociology and minored in Psychology. Once I graduated, I still did not know what career path was right for me, so I took a year off. In the meantime, I applied to three Schools of Social Work: Dalhousie University in Halifax, N.S., St. Thomas University in Fredericton, N.B., and Memorial University in St. John’s, N.L. I spent my gap year working to save up money so I could pay for my next two years of schooling. I decided to apply to schools of social work because I was really interested in my courses that were related to child development and behaviours, interactions between people and society, social inequality and justice, and human rights, which are all relevant to social work.
