Throughout first year Sem we have talked about a lot of different subjects that ultimately tie all together as one. The main theme for the year is a call to family and community. To go over this we read United by Cory Booker. United wasn’t just used to be read but it was used to help us think and connect to what is going on in the real world. To use this connection we used examples of current events, to use a real world application. In doing this it’s made me think more about the world and what could be done to help with the little issues. In current events we had talked about many different things. Mostly they consisted of politics, race or killings all around the world. Hearing about some of these was heartbreaking but important to …show more content…
One of my favorite events that happened this semester during first year sem was hearing the voices from inside. Getting to hear these quick poems that these women wrote was amazing. Most were good and came from the heart. Hearing from these women made me want to talk with some of them after. When I did go to talk to them I heard about some of their experiences and get to know why doing this program helps. Some of them were into some hard stuff and lost some of their family and loved ones because of it. They get ten minutes to write their piece and they really write what they are thinking. Some talk about their time in jail through a poem and others talk about what it was like before getting convicted. It would be fun to hear more from them. Another thing we did was have a talk with Alaina DiGeorgio about having privilege. Doing the bead activity made you think about what privilege you have. Going through the list made you think more about what people actually go through on a daily basis. Some people don’t get the items that we have or even the family and friends we might have. There are so many new issues happening in the world people are losing out on some of the great things that we have as well. The last activity I talked about ties into United a little bit. Reading United I was reminded about ow little people only a few hours away have. If they had done the bead activity it would be harder for them because maybe they might not have the same experiences we have.
This year, attendees were encouraged to increase their impact on both their communities and in the world through the theme 'Amplify'. Over the{insert time period word} the group listened to various speakers who used their own experiences and achievements to reinforce the theme. Brad Montague, creator of Kid President, Dr. Rick Rigsby, a seasoned motivational speaker, and Amberly Snyder, a strong-willed horseback rider who's
As a diverse student, in a very low income community I have always been known to standing up for others, as well as for myself. Having this natural drive i found myself taking a huge role in our high school Beta Club. As a natural leader, I was challenged with the opportunity to represent our high school’s Beta Club Chapter while running for North Carolina Beta Secretary. Although I felt experienced as a leader, I was really nervous to get up in front of all of North Carolina and give a speech at the Beta Club convention. Although I was nervous, I opened my mouth, and the words just began to come out. My fears went away, and I addressed everyone on topics of educational improvements and opportunities for all students to succeed. I used this
The seventh activity I participated in was wearing green on October sixth to support mental health awareness. It was neat to see how many people participated. Making people more aware of mental health disorders is very important because some people truly do not understand them.
Completing the exercise on privilege beads was interesting, it was a good reminder that each individual person is different in some way and therapists should develop an idea of who the person is instead of looking at them as a race, culture, or ethnicity. There are several aspects that need to be examined when treating a client, but diversity should never be ignored. The experience also provided some gratitude for the fact that I have access to medical professionals and the ability to receive basic healthcare when needed. It was also a good reminder that most of these things, were factors of the environments people are born into, but that does not mean people can not advocate for others that do not have the same privileges. It made me want
From this conference, I will get out a better sense of leadership and pride for who I am. Before I went to Southfield and The Park School, I went to a Boston Public School where much of the students were people of color. Now the majority are light-skinned.
This year’s theme is reflected very well in the book United by Cory Booker. Booker himself is sending his readers a call to action on the social conflicts and racial issues in our society. He gives examples from his own life on how one can give back to the community. He also tells about different mentors that he has had throughout his life that molded him into the person he is today. There were many instances when Booker’s opinions on how a particular situation should be handled was challenged, and these challenges positively changed his ideals.
The Animal Lockdown First off, Old major has a dream of a world without humans, calls a meeting and tells the other animals. Old major dies in his sleep and the animals plan a rebellion against the humans. Second, the animals began working together while Snowball and Napoleon start to take control of the the others. Soon after, the 7 commandments are created. Later on word begins to spread through the neighboring farms, soon after, the Battle of the Cowshed begins.
Lady Macbeth is unlike the women of her time. Her dominant personality and commanding tone differ from the culture of the Renaissance period where a common theme for women was to be seen but not heard. Men thought women were inferior in society, and a multitude of ladies were expected to take on humble occupations with no hope of furthering their education or job position. Leadership and the ability to make decisions concerning life and welfare were left up to the men (Cloud 1). Lady Macbeth challenges this belief in her ambition to be queen and her manipulative tactics to make sure such a goal is accomplished.
The arguments I choose to assess for truth and validity will be three statements taken from the Application's list 12.2 (a -y) at the end of Ch. 12, “The Art of Thinking” publication. I will start with the statement (j) the premise that "power must be evil because it can corrupt people." Checking the argument for any hidden premises and ensuring it is stated fully and in a clear concise way is the first step. This argument seems to pass the first hurdle, however after checking for errors affecting truth, the argument has flaws. Beginning with, the part of the argument that says power corrupts people is not true
I interviewed my Mom about her journey to California and why she got there. She impacted me because she told me that she went to the U.S. for several reasons. The food in Vietnam has dust in it, Vietnam is a communist country, most water sources in Vietnam are dirty, and so my two little sisters and I can have free education. That motivated me to be grateful that my Mom brought me here to California.
Sometimes it is hard to create an environment where students can come together and put their ideas together so that their peers are able to relate, improve, and develop that idea. However when I first came to this class something that really helped me engage in the class and get up to date was the Cycle of Liberation group.
The main purpose for this essay is to discuss whether or not youth culture is saturated with porn? The essay aims to highlight what youth culture is and how it can be affected? This will take into account a number of sources, research including The Academy of Paediatrics and Colett (2014) in order to establish a definition of what the term youth culture truly is. It will then discuss what porn is and how it can affect a young person and finally how educators can approach such a sensitive topic. What is youth culture? Youth culture is the way adolescents live their lives and the social normalities, values and practices they share. Colette identifies that “youth culture is not so easily defined and is rapidly changing.” This identifies an issue in itself that because of rapid change youth can find it difficult to define them selves, who they are and what they want. There are many areas in society that affect youth culture, these include: music and film, literature, social media, sexual attitudes, sub cultures, political and commercial influences, and a constant battle to challenge traditions. In more recent years young people are feeling more pressure by society in many ways but none so as high as sexual pressure. The age people are beginning to have their first sexual experience is on a rapid decrease with some known cases as young as 10, along side the amount of sexual promiscuity is on the increase. Television and radio advertisement, movies and everyday music young people
The illness had taken everything from them, their homes and families no one knows the cure or the reason it came. The blamed it on witches and burned some of the women, but that only spread the disease by air. Children were forced out of town with masks full of natural herbs and flowers. The children made groups that would fight and try to be the biggest. Some of the groups were violent, while others tried to help. Club Warlock, is the most violent and horrible group. Steve, Richard, George, and Erin were Club Wave and created many things including shelter for other clubs.
