Uniforms: A Controversy Around The World

In the article “How Ugly Schools Uniforms Will Save Education” by Belinda Luscombe found in Time, the author explains how various school problems which lead to crime and disobedience of law could be solved by introducing school uniforms. There are often arguments about what to wear at school. “It's a debate that sucks up a lot of time for school administrators. And parents. But it's the world's easiest education problem to solve: school uniforms.” The author's main point is to make people aware of the need of school uniforms and how it helps solve many crucial problems.

School Uniforms are being pushed more and more in schools, but what is commonly thought of when the words “school uniform” is said? For most people the picture of children in the same colored uniforms gathered in front of a Catholic Church or a private school is displayed in their mind. This picture is one of the many problems with school uniforms. Instead of being seen as an individual, students are seen as just another kid in a uniform attending a fancy private school. The students cannot develop the self-expression that is crucial to their development at this age. Uniforms are thought to create a more protected campus and learning environment, however, if someone wants to bully someone else, clothes are not going to stop them. The cost, which is usually seen as a pro, can actually be more than people anticipate. As one can see, in the best interest of any student, school uniforms should not be made part of the dress code.

There are many students that go to school with low self esteems and thinking that they are not as good as others just because of their clothing. This problem could be reduced for many kids with school uniforms. Example a school in southern California made it mandatory for all student “k-8” to where a school uniform. From 1933 to 1995 the conduct had major improvement after going to school uniforms (Riley). That is a fact showing that school uniforms have an impact of student life. Another highly talked about topic is bullying, bullying can come from many things but one of the reasons student pick on other students is because of their clothing. With school uniforms every student will not have to worry about having the name brand clothing which means that puts all students on a level field. So if all kids are dressed the same that would decrease a big problem known as bullying and would also increase students self esteem.

Having students wear uniforms in school will decrease the amount of bullying that occurs in schools today. Currently in todays time, uniforms have been known to diminish the amount of bullying that occurs in school. One study reveals that “Two-thirds of parents say wearing a school uniform puts students on a level playing field and makes their life easier, according to the survey of 1,318 teachers, parents and pupils. Seven in 10 respondents believe uniforms reduce the pressure on young people to wear the latest fashion, a factor in bullying” (Dunne). By supplying uniforms in schools, bullying is cut down by a great deal. Students today want to wear the latest and coolest fashion to look stylish in school. However, many parents can’t afford it, so students are projected to bullying for not having these so called trendy clothes. So by wearing a uniform everyone is dressed the same. Students from schools with a uniform policy say that uniforms have affected the way they feel about themselves in an unsatisfactory way. Uniforms are proven to slow down the transition into becoming an adult because students are not used to choosing their own clothing. Wearing a uniform opens an opportunity for students to judge each other’s bodies based on how they look and it creates room for drama and bullying. The uniforms can also obstruct a student from expressing themselves. Schools should not require a school uniform policy because they delay the transition into adulthood, they cause students to compare their bodies and bullying each other, and uniforms restrict a student’s self-expression and personality.

In case, you didn’t know, more than half of the kids who don’t wear uniforms to school get bullied every day. If kids wear uniforms to school it decreases their chance at getting bullied about the clothes they wear. Although most kids don’t like the fact that they have to match every other kid, however, even matching eliminates the chance for you to get bullied. Any

School is a place for education and not looks. This is relevant to my topic because school uniforms help a student focus on education and not how they look in the classroom. Today students need to focus on getting good grades and their attendance before worrying about how they can impress other students. One thing it helps is school work and focus in the classroom. It has led to students having better behavior and improving attendance. Uniforms are also cost effective for parents that can't afford name brand clothes.

Schools are all over the world, and a having school uniforms would lower the bullying levels. A bully could make fun of one’s clothing, how someone dresses, and how they look. An educational institution was not intended to be a platform for students to parade fashion, wealth or privilege. Too often, kids are preoccupied and obsessed about popularity, social standings, and how they can fit in. How children dress themselves often separates the haves from the have-nots. Households that are struggling to make ends meet are not financially able to keep up with fashion trends and can be targeted for bullying. When peers are dressed in uniforms, the social class distinction becomes much less obvious, prejudice and discrimination will lessen; which ultimately create a less hostile environment. As a result, school uniforms will compel students to spend their time expressing themselves through other channels; such as art, music, sports, and academic achievement.

If there was a person who were to care so much about their clothes should just drop out of school and start becoming a model or get a job in a fashion store because students go to school for learning and getting an education, not for showing off their clothes and keeping up with the fashion trends. As there are many problems in schools that students tend to wear outfits that show too much skin, which can be really distracting to other students from learning. School is not an area for students to show off each others fashion, nor wealth nor privileges.Today, there are too many students that get distracted by the popularity and think about what they can do to fit in. The way students dress themselves can easily be seen by others from what they need and what they don’t. Nowadays, we see many teenagers dress in spaghetti-strap tank tops, low-cut shirts, drop pants, pajamas, and even spandex shorts in school even though there have been policies about dress codes. Teachers, parents, and other adults feel disgruntled about the way they dress. Many students also complain about difficulties in concentrating on schoolwork because of the same reason.
