Street skateboarding and vert skateboarding maintain some various viewpoints, in addition, they have countless differences. Looking at the design of a skateboard, various people do not understand the difference between boards. Skateboards come in a variety of shapes and sizes just as comparable as people are. Like people, when boards are put next to one another the differences can become clearly apparent. In fact, these differences are noted mainly in the width of the board as well as in the shape of the board. In street skateboarding, a great deal of people choose the 7.25” to 8.75” sized board. While in vert skateboarding, several choose a size 9” to 1’ board.
Skateboarding has been around since 1944. Initially, created as a crate with wheels and a bar used as a handle bar, the idea was slowly being more refined. Woman’s Army Corps Betty Magnuson, reported seeing French children riding on wooden boards with rollerblade wheels attached to them which would imply that the idea has been played around with but never capitalized upon. From crate boxes with handle bars, to popsicle shaped boards with specialty made wheels backed with a massive culture, skateboarding has become a popular industry.

For figure skates to be able to glide across the ice, the ice needs to be almost frictionless.
Speed. People nowadays can’t get enough of it. There are ample ways to reach ridiculous speeds: fast cars, to racing bikes, superbikes and skiing all break the bounds of ‘too fast’. However, a group of the longboarding community-a subset of the skateboarding community-seem to disagree. They ride their longboards, long, wide skateboards with big grippy wheels, down mountain roads at speeds between 30mph and 70mph, reaching 80mph at the professional end of the sport.
Once all four wheels are in contact with the ground, the skater stand on top of the board with his feet touching the grip-tape. There are two different “stances” a person can take when riding a skateboard. The nose of the board is the front and will be thicker and longer than seen in the tail. The tail of the board is considered the back and is thinner and shorter than the nose. If a skater rides with their right foot forward (near the nose) this is called a “goofie” stance, while riding with the left foot forward is called a “regular” stance. The normative belief then is for the skater to use their back foot to accelerate them forwards by pushing of the ground. For the purpose of this paper, we will imagine a person on top of the board as just described (in either stance), and disregarding the friction caused by the grip tape.
The key to success while playing an on-ice sport is knowing the equiptment. The most important piece of equipment is what allows us to even skate on ice: Ice skates. Made for different things, they all look different and have different components. One thing they have in common is that the blade is made from carbon steel. When skating, it cuts through the ice, creating just micro-millimeters of water and that’s how people skate on ice. Although hockey, figure skating and speed skating are all performed on ice, it is necessary to use different skates to be successful.
