Tupac Shakur was born June 16, 1971 in East Harlem, New York City. His parents were Black Panther Party members Billy Garland and Afeni Shakur who was in prison for bombing charges while Afeni was pregnant with him. He was named Tupac Amaru, for an Incan chief whose name that means "shining serpent." When Shakur was 13, he spent his earliest years in the Bronx and Harlem where he made his acting debut in a production of A Raisin in the Sun at the Apollo theatre benefit for Jesse Jackson's 1984 presidential campaign. He successfully auditioned to become a dancer and roadie for the rap group called Digital Underground and simultaneously worked diligently on his own music.
