It is wonderful teaching Josh. He asks well thought out questions and adds valuable information to most lessons. Josh needs to be more consistent with proofreading all of his work. He easily grasps the difficult concepts in Tuck Everlasting, but he can leave out critical details when responding to his question in writing. I want Josh to spend more time researching and thinking about his answer before writing his response.
Josh has completed his reading assessment. His reading fluency and decoding are at grade level. When Josh takes the time to check over his work, his reading comprehension is strong. When asked to discuss his reading, he does well. However, when Josh writes his thoughts down on paper, many of his answers are too vague.
Critical thinking is making well thought out logical decisions. You don’t have to accept everything just have an open mind about it. It is trying to understand something even when you are skeptical or don’t really believe it. You have to ask questions and try to come up with different conclusions than what you originally had or thought. Some of my questions that I have had from reading these past couple weeks would be; “What does it all mean?” “What is he trying to say?” and “How did he end up with that conclusion?” Using the Socratic Method, like Socrates did in his life, will ensure that we come up with different arguments to
We are on week four, time is going by fast. I Just got home and went strait to my office, I want to get the class started, I am happy about my graded test last week I did well.
The student I worked with is in 5th grade. We did a DRA on a story called “Cry Foul”. This is a great assessment to assess a student’s reading ability in order to enhance his or her literacy achievement. I learned many things about my student that he likes to read adventurous books and books regarding sports. He wants to become a better reader by enhancing his understanding and vocabulary of the text. It’s also a bit difficult for him since English is his second language and a year ago he was taking ESL classes. It’s amazing that he has great goal settings that determines that he wants to become a better reader. The things that I observed about the student is that his oral reading is fluent since he had about three miscues in which one was
Self- esteem is used to describe a person's overall sense of self- worth or personal value.
Jr has no problem making and keeping friends, socializing was not an issue for him, and reports having a large social group including social network. He reports that his friends have influenced him towards his life choices and he recognizes where he went wrong. Jr reports that though he had a lot of friends many left when he faces criminal charges or suffered multiple overdoses. Jr realizes that in order to remain sober he must leave his friends behind and focus on himself.
My mother and I is quite similar to one another, except with connection. Mom likes to be surrounded by her family, close friends and dependent on others. The contrast, I am independent but I do like being close to my family and friends.
2. In the 21st century exposure to media is an everyday event for most of us. Even at the grocery store, we see magazines and newspapers with eye-catching headings that may not be true. Also, the news is everywhere, and with technology on the rise, we even get news alerts on our phones. The media has taken over society. Most of the stories we read about seem to be true but in reality, are they giving a true insight of what is actually happening? Some of the stories cause people to become blindfolded from reality. This is because the stories that people read or see have a profound impact on shaping our reality rather they are true or not. We see the news about events that are going on in the world; rather they are catastrophic events or devastating events that were done by humans.
In Chapter 3, there were 12 areas of bias spread across the 3 areas of heuristics. The main theme of the text was to prove that we are predisposed to certain outcomes. As we make important decisions we rely on our memory, or a number of past events, or even ignoring facts. Overall, we are biased in many ways when it comes to making decisions, or predicting outcomes of a particular event.
In our lives there are many different cognitive biases that can interfere with our ability to solve problems and/or make rational decisions. One that I think is especially problematic, and has been for quite some time, is representativeness heuristic. This is defined as the tendency to make judgments about a group membership based on physical appearances or the match between a person and one’s stereotype of a group rather than on base rate information. And essentially, a stereotype is the use of concepts to make generalizations about a group of people. (pgs. 252-253) Stereotyping in this country is, and always has been, a huge problem.
Hi Rikki, you did a really nice job organizing and answering this week’s discussion question. In your comment to my post you mention how you questioned your choice on which one you thought was most important. After reading what you had to say and how you thought the imaginary victim was the most important I would have to say I now agree with you. Originally I didn’t considered the imaginary victim to be one of the most important, but you made a good point saying that there is zero blame placed on the prosecuting party. Mendelsohn’s theory was definitely a major success for his times as you stated. I find it to be truly interesting that he was able to accomplish what he did simply because he was trying to properly represent his client
Chapter 16 is about critical thinking and moral arguments. Critical thinking is a mode of thinking in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully analyzing, assessing, and reconstructing it. A moral argument is an argument with a conclusion that expresses a moral claim. Logic is rational thoughts and formats tool or ways of reasoning. Formal logic is the use of deductive reasoning and is a structured argument with a set of premises and one conclusion.
He does well when reading independently for school or for leisure. He grasps content quickly. When asked to read aloud during the assessment and in a classroom setting he reads almost too quickly. He reads so fast in fact that the comprehension of what he is reading goes down. It is my opinion that his drive to read quickly can be a hindrance to his comprehension. Throughout the process of this assessment and through observation it appears that Kevin would do well by also listening to instructional information. If he a room was too brightly lit making it hard to read print, or if his eyes were tired he could easily acquire just as much information by
Voltaire once said, “No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking” (“Voltaire Quotes”) What Voltaire intended to convey was that extensive and critical thinking can allow people to arrive at rational solutions to problems. This is one of the reasons why the significance of thinking critically has become a popular issue that is discussed about in educational systems nowadays. It is imperative that students develop critical thinking skills and not just blindly be taught what to think, but rather how to think. Pure memorization will not lead to authentic learning; instead, encouraging critical thinking is what will help students evaluate problems and make reasonable decisions. As humans are susceptible to emotions, critical

Destin breaks down a complicated idea by simply stating knowledge is not the same as understanding. This idea is extremely applicable to all of our daily lives. As I watched the video I thought about all the times I have watched bowlers who know what they're doing. The idea is so simple, roll the ball with a slight curve so that it hits the formation of pins slightly off center. Everytime I go to the bowling alley I see the retiree off in the corner bowling strike after strike. The thought “I can do that” inevitably enters my head every time. I always prove myself wrong by bowling into the gutter every time for the first four frames. Despite having the knowledge of how I should bowl I lack the understanding.
