Truth can be defined as the quality or state of being true, but Tennessee Williams uses truth in a way that the characters do not even know their own truth. In A Streetcar Named Desire, Williams use of expressionistic techniques in scene three, defines the characters for the audience to get a deeper understanding. Tennessee Williams conveys dialogue and symbolic props to illustrate to the audience Mitch’s truth which he cannot articulate and Blanche’s constant need of a bath and alcoholism to conceal her reality.
