August Wilson’s play Fences gives a glimpse back in time into the life of Troy Maxson during the 1950s. Troy Maxson is an African-American living in Pittsburgh working as a garbage collector. However, he is bitter and feels as if he has been cheated out of a good life because of his past, race, and age. This behavior drives a wedge between him and the people who care about him. Wilson uses the theatre life themes of generation and love to tell how Troy Maxson displays self-destructive characteristics. Baseball was a major part of Troy Maxson’s life. Maxson’s good friend Bono states “Ain't but two men ever played baseball as good as you. That’s Babe Ruth and Josh Gibson. Them's the only two men ever hit more home runs than you” (Wilson p. …show more content…

For an example, Troy tells Rose, “I'm talking, woman, let me talk. I'm trying to find a way to tell you ... I'm gonna be a daddy. I'm gonna be somebody's daddy” (Wilson p. 1067). This shocking news Rose is angry because she feels as if Troy has cheated out of eighteen years of her life (Wilson p. 1068). As husband and wife, they began to drift apart from one another. Rose goes months without talking to him after hearing the news. (Wilson p. 1071) Cory and Troy’s relationship is so damaged that Cory asks Troy, “How come you ain’t never liked me?” (Wilson p. 1052). Troy views their relationship as a responsibility rather than a loving relationship, he states “It's my job. It's my responsibility! You understand that? A man got to take care of his family” (Wilson p. 1052). This built anger inside of Cory later led to an altercation between him Troy, Cory states “I ain't got to say excuse me to you. You don't count around here no more” (Wilson p. 1077). Since Rose startes to depend on Troy less around the house, his authority begins to fade in the house, giving Cory the idea that Troy does not count around the house.
