Treating Pedophiles Over the years treatment for pedophilia has altered dramatically since the illness began appearing in American diagnostic manuals around the 1950’s. (Palmer, 2010) Like many other types of disorders and diseases Pedophilia does not have a complete cure and doctors do not attempt to permanently cure patients. (Cole, 2010) However, various techniques are practiced to reduce the patient acting on the urges without permanently purging pedophiles of their sexual fantasies. (Cole, 2010) Studies has shown that hormone suppressors, therapy and even castration is an extreme temporary resolution for treating pedophilia. (Cole, 2010) Doctors suggest a more reliable option to reduce the testosterone in patients using a drug called anti-androgens. (Palmer, 2010) Anti-androgens, are designed prevent and reduce the sex …show more content…
(Hyde, 2006)This disorder invokes sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges and behaviors that occurs for at least six months or includes sexual relations with a prepubescent child. (Hyde, 2006)Luckily, various treatments are being used to treat this disorder which consist of behavior therapy and drugs to reduce testosterone levels in male’s testicles. (Hyde, 2006) Doctor’s believes the motivation behind child sexual abuse is the lack of interpersonal skills for an adult to function in a healthy adult heterosexual relationship. (Hyde, 2006) Studies has shown that treating pedophilia is going to be a long journey and treatment main focus is to prevent more occurrences than changing a patients sexual orientation. (Cole, 2010)Other procedures involves chemical and surgical castration the ideal behind castration as a form of treatment is to remove the male’s testes to decline his testosterone levels. Some doctors believe by doing these procedures it balances a male’s sexual and aggressive behavior towards children. (Hyde,
Sexuality is a quagmire of ambiguity and frustration, especially during adolescence. The unpredictable hormonal ups and downs of puberty are difficult enough, without the societal pressures of abstinence versus promiscuity. The double standard of boys sowing their wild oats and slut shaming are still as prevalent today as they were in the 1950’s.
You may be wondering well if children can possibly be cured what about adults. This is where much of science has blinders on. There is very little evidence to prove why adults commit such acts. Many myths state that it could be a result of childhood abuse or they have the want for as much sex as possible. There is a serious of test that the convicted go thru to figure out why they may have done it called a clinical sample. Some area these samples have
Aversion Therapy is a method of treatment used to treat, decrease, and evidentially try to eliminate intolerable behaviors. This form of treatment has been used to treat many different addictions and ailments. There are multiple methods used in Aversion Therapy treatment. The study of Aversion Therapy used in treating sexual disorders has been around for years and is somewhat controversial. The four major methods of Aversion Therapy used in the treating of sexual addictions and behaviors are: chemical, electrical, classical, and operant. Today’s society is chalk full of sexual deviants, pedophiles, and rapists, who have deep seated issues which need addressed and resolved. Since the 50’s, there has been a serious increase in sexual abuse and sexual abuse related deaths. During this time, the number of pedophiles and sexual deviants has drastically increased. Sexual abuse and sexual misconduct is one of the leading causes of psychological issues in children and adults today. Aversion Therapy is being used to loosen the grip of sexual addictions and sexual psychological disorders. The techniques have been used in treating many sexual deviants and are described and critically measured from the point of view of the experimental psychology of learning.
Most psychological research on the personalities of pedophiles consists of only clinical descriptions and case presentations. Bell and Hall represented the clinical approaches to the study of the personalities of pedophiles. They analyzed the dreams of a pedophiles and made suggestions about their characteristics. “ The inference from their case report was that pedophiles have a basic character disorder shown by schizoid and passive traits as well as a severe dread of adult sexuality.”(Bell & Hall 1971).
It is said that this disorder involves when an individual has “…intense sexual urges or fantasies about sexual activity with a prepubertal child.” It is not necessary that the individual act on their actions, which we see in the case study with James he does not act on his feelings; although it is not completely evident that he is suffering from pedophilia, there are some evidence that can support that he is. In the DSM-5 it is said that people with this disorder go for children who are 13 years or younger, and their “sexual urges or fantasies” usually cause interpersonal difficulty. The most predominant evidence is his parents saying that they hear noises coming from his bedroom that sound like children, and with that they believe that he may be watching child pornography and possibly masturbating to it. It is especially weird that when his parents ask him a question he has a hard time sticking to a conversation, instead he “trails off”. Another important aspect is that since he may have this disorder which involves children and his overuse of playing video games…it is obvious that children are more prone to playing video games, and the voices that he hears on the other side of his XBOX could possibly be children that he talks to and tries to be friends with. As my differential diagnosis I would choose Pedophilic Disorder to be my second
The purpose of sex offender treatment is to alter the deviant sexual arousal patterns, addressing social skills deficits that result in deviant behavior, to challenge the beliefs that facilitate sex-offending behavior, and to develop strategies to prevent sexual reoffending. To resolve the above mentioned problems involves the use of both medication and behavioral based treatment models. Medications that are used to decrease sexual deviant behavior include synthetic progesterone derivatives such as medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) and cyproterone (CPA), luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonist leuprolide acetate (LHRH), Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), and serotonin-specific reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) (Fong, 2006; Dolan, 2009). The atypical sexual behavior that I cannot wrap my head around is pedophilia. I have tried to educate myself on this topic and read a book on treating the offender but my opinion has remained the same. I just cannot understand how or why this occurs and I really don’t think I want to.
pedophilia, exhibitionism, sadism, etc.) (Kaplan & Krueger, 2012). Dolan (2009) introduces a notion that involves combining cognitive-behavioral therapy with other methods to yield better results. Essentially, it is discussed in Dolan’s (2009) article that sufficient evidence exists to suggest combining cognitive-behavioral treatments with relapse prevention, intensive residential treatment, and community-based sex offender treatment programs can reduce the risk of recidivism. Dolan (2009) describes a combined method that needs further research but could be a successful pairing in cognitive-behavioral therapy and psychopharmacologicals/pharmacological treatments. Essentially, Dolan (2009) is introducing new advancements in sex offender treatments to be paired with cognitive-behavioral therapy because the research is leading Dolan to believe that this approach does not work on its
The issue of whether sex offenders should be chemically or physically castrated has been one that has sparked much debate over the years. There are many people who believe, apart from murder or treason, that sexual abuse is one of the worst crimes that a person can commit against another. In these circumstances, many have voiced the proposition that such an offender, especially when they are repeat offenders, be punished in the harshest way allowed. Apart from the obvious jail term, the extra punishment would be either surgical or chemical castration (Beech & Grubin, 2010). Castration has two ways that it can be done: surgical and chemical. Surgical castration involves the removal of the testes and chemical castration uses hormones to drastically reduce the testosterone levels in
Chemical castration is a reversible treatment for those with urges to commit sex crimes, as well as those who have had a history of convicted sex crimes. This drug treatment helps to lower sex drives and decrease aggressive and violent tendencies. There are side effects to this drug just as there are for every other medicine on the market. Although it was not created for men, they suffer no extra side effects than the women. Chemical castration is an exceptional alternative to prison time or it works as a stepping block for integration back into society. It is a more cost effective alternative as well as being more efficient in correcting the problem as opposed to locking it up. With strict guidelines and continual use it can be the most effective course of action for sexual offenders today.
The treatment for sexual offenders is done in a three principal approach which is cognitive behavioral approach, psycho-educational approach, and pharmacological approach. The cognitive behavioral approach gives emphasis on altering the habits of the offended relating toward sexual offending and “deviant patterns of arousal”. (CSOM) This means altering the daily habits of the offender which may be everything they had known previously to incarceration. The second principal of psycho-educational focuses on altering the offender’s state of mind toward their victims and attempts to instill the understanding of how they inflicted harm with their actions. With psychology there is never a set time on how long a set goal will be reached. Times vary between individuals and can sometime never reach their desired outcome. In conjunction with those previous principals the offenders are also treated under the pharmacological
When scrutinizing the criteria it also noteworthy clinically these juvenile sex offenders can also fall under Paraphilia-Related Disorders (PRD) which has been reported as having uncontrollable pornography and masturbation. According to Kafka he purports, “The commonly reported PRD 's include compulsive masturbation, protracted promiscuity, pornography dependence, telephone or cybersex dependence, in severe sexual desire and compatibility.” (Kafka, 2003a, p. 443). It has been noted by the Justice Center statistically juvenile sex offenders do struggle greatly with excessive masturbation and pornography. These two pieces alone are not enough to meet the criteria for the diagnosis of Hypersexual Disorder however; it should alert the clinician
Russell (1997) informs that there are two forms of castration: chemical and surgical. According to Chism (2013), the oldest and most effective approach to controlling deviant sexual urges and reducing recidivism rates of male sex offenders is surgical castration. This is partially backed up by the data given by McMillian (2014), who composed a study of 104 men, revealing the recidivism rate as 3% for those who had been castrated compared to 45% with those who had not. Cauley (2014) identified cases where surgical castration has been used nationally and in the United States, showing that castration is quite effective.
Gardner claimed a pedophile should “be helped to appreciate that, even today, [pedophilia] is a widespread and accepted practice among literally billions of people.” When using therapy Gardner suggested the therapist talk about other things, since the the goal of therapy is "to help people forget about their problems." Gardner also argued that “the removal of a pedophilic parent from the home should only be seriously considered after all attempts at treatment of the pedophilia and rapprochement with the family have proven
The Earth’s crust consists of minerals, minerals that can be found in specific locations. In criminal cases, police officers and investigators often ignore crust in crime scenes and as a result, critical evidence is missed. I believe that, soil can be processed and examined to obtain information and evidence. In the article “How Pedology and Mineralogy Helped Solve a Double Murder Case: Using Forensics to Inspire Future Generations of Soil Scientists” Robert W. Fitzpatrick and Mark D. Raven support soil science and explain the benefits of it to criminology. In a specific criminal case, a man called police to report “…that both his wife and mother-in-law were missing,” additionally “his wife’s car and his 22-yr-old son Matt hew Holding were also missing” (Fitzpatrick and Raven 5). Later, investigators found his wife’s car abandoned and police officers arrested Matt Holding. Matt Holding refused to cooperate and the two
