Terra,
Thanks for the response. You make a lot of great points about change being hard for people. The transtheoretical model of health behavior change is a great example of how people move through behavior change. People move through five stages of when dealing with change. These include precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, adn maintance (Melnyk & Fineover-Overhalt, 2014). Individuals can move through the stages in order and they can also move backwards. I was at a conference a couple of years ago where they were talking about how people move through change and how to help people be successful in dealing with change. Change is very difficult to deal with. I found it interesting that people always say that it takes 21 days
In this report it will investigate at least three recent health education campaigns and use them to explain two models of behaviour change. The three recent health education campaigns will be ‘Smoke Free’, ‘Change4Life’ and ‘FRANK’. The two models of behaviour change will be the theory of reasoned action and the stages of change model.
Bill is a man that has dementia and lives with his niece Jane. He oftens asked the same questions regularly this annoys Jane because she thinks he is doing this on badness, so she shouts into his face this scares and she also pushes him onto his bed, this causes bruising to Bill. This abuse is both physical and psychological abuse. Physical abuse is abuse that hurts the person the body and psychological abuse is harming the person’s mental state. With some forms of abuse in the UK physical and psychological abuse are both at 0.4%. 37% of abusers are family members, the category that Jane is fitted in. While in the Republic of Ireland 1.2% psychological and 0.5% physical of people 65+ were abused.
In everyday life many people develop habits, but it is never too late to attempt to change that bad habit to live a healthier life. For this behavioral change project, I was asked to choose a health behavior that I would like to change for the better. So, I decided that I wanted to increase the amount of water I was consuming each day. The standard recommendation on how much water an individual should consume is about 64 ounces daily. However how much a person should drink is more individualized then one might assume. Therefore, for this particular project my goal was to at least consume 64 ounces of water daily as a baseline starting point. I also had to consider days when I worked out. So, I decided that I would attempt to increase that amount
The aim of the assignment is to outline at least 2 Theoretical Models that underpin health promotion. The theories chosen in this evaluation are the Health Belief Model and the Social Cognitive Theory. In order to outline theories which underpin health promotion it is important to first understand what health promotion is. Heath promotion is the process of enabling control over health and its detriments, improving health in the long run.
Explain two models of behaviour change that have been used in recent national health education campaigns.
At the beginning of the spring semester, when I read the syllabus for the Models of psychotherapy class assignments, the one that took my attention was about behavioral change exercise. I thought, this exercise could help me through my high temper combined with my anger issues by screaming all the time my family. In all my college experience this was the specific project I was really looking forward to complete. Not just for doing my homework, but also because I was thinking this will be really beneficial for my family well been and my own harmony.
The Transtheoretical Model is a theory of health behavior that suggests that behavior change is a process, not an event. There are five stages of change someone can go through while attempting to engage in positive behavior: precontemplation, no intention to act within six months; contemplation, intention to act within six months; preparation, intention to act within the next thirty days along with some behavioral steps; action, changed behavior for less than six months, maintenance, changed behavior for more than six months; termination, end of the behavior. These stages are not linear, so an individual can move up and down the stages of change indiscriminately.
Hi Jenna, thanks for the questions. Yes you are right, change is really hard for some people sometimes. As an LPN, I see that a lot in my workplace. In my case, I am flexible with change. I look at it as positive and embrace it openly. I implement the change to improve my patient delivery to an optimum level. Other nurses are very reluctant to implement change because it’s not what they have been practicing. You will hear negativity and through actions. It takes
The Trans theoretical Model (TTM), or Stages of Change Model, formulated by Prochaska and Carlo DiClemente, is a bio-psychosocial model used to conceptualize the process of behavioral change in an individual. It evolved from studies comparing the experiences and outcomes of individuals who quit smoking due to individual decisions and actions, to those who required further treatment and program attendance to quit smoking (Lamorte, W., 2016). This highly credible, and useful model seeks to incorporate key constructs from various theories into an understandable theory of change, which is applied in Public Health to multiple populations, behaviors, and situations where individuals seek to better their physical, emotional, and or even social health.
Behaviour Modification is very important in many health related behaviour problems and this can range from alcohol abuse, tobacco abuse, hypertension, diabetes, overeating disorders. Health-related behaviours are the very important determinants of health care and also quality of life. The field of behavioral informatics has major potential to optimize several interventiaons through monitoring, assessing, and modeling behaviour in support of providing tailored and timely interventions (Pavel, 2015). Improving health-realted behaviours will be an important aspect for preventive health care. Behaviour interventions play an important role in mitigating costs, loss of quality of life and increased morbidity which is caused by behaviours (Pavel,
One behavior that I would like to improve for myself is increasing my daily physical activity level. I chose to utilize the Revised Health Promotion Model (HPM) to address this behavior. Upon reviewing the various models and theories in chapter three of the textbook, the revised Health Promotion model stood out to me and I felt many aspects of the model are perfect to address the behavior I selected to change. The three main components of the model focus on the individual characteristics and experiences, behavior-specific cognition and affect, and the behavioral outcome (Pender et al., 2011). All of these components are essential when planning and intervening to change a behavior. The text states “Research indicates that often the best predictor of behavior is the frequency of the same or similar behavior in the past. Prior behavior is posed to have both direct and indirect
According to the Department of Health and Human Services (2015) (HHS), physical activity generally refers to any body movement that improves one’s health by working their muscles. Physical activity can range from walking to running to doing yoga. However, the lack of physical activity is becoming an increasingly prevalent health problem in the world today, particularly women in developing countries. Regular physical activity is vital in women’s health to prevent many of the leading causes of death linked with insufficient physical activity. Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death for women around the world, accounting for one-third of deaths. Also, cardiovascular disease accounts for “half
On individual level changes in health promotion and ecological approaches target and influence multiple health behaviors. This is because the individuals living in the environment are embedded in temporary change of behaviors. Therefore it is very important to consider ecological approaches, changing health behaviors and environmental factors while designing operational and supportable health promotion plans.
The “Truth” intervention was a mass media public health initiative that aimed at revealing truths untold by the cigarette manufacturers and was specifically initiated by the American Legacy Foundation. In its most basic form it can be described as an antismoking campaign that mostly targeted young people and thoroughly deglamorized the smoking behavior. Through the television campaigns, the intervention highlighted several things that concerned effects of smoking behavior not only to the young people but also to the adults because it was using the mass media. Firstly, it openly laid out both the short and long term effects of smoking habit and tinted smoking as undesirable
My overall experience with the behavior change project was positive, as I was able to successfully change my sleeping habits. Although there were times when sticking to my behavior change plan was extremely difficult, I was able to stay on track and change my sleeping habits. As a result of my behavior change, I now feel healthier and less fatigued. Because of these physical improvements, important areas of my life, such as school and sports, have improved also. My performance in the classroom and on the basketball court has noticeably become better after making this behavior change.
