Livy’s The Rise of Rome serves as the ultimate catalogue of Roman history, elaborating on the accomplishments of each king and set of consuls through the ages of its vast empire. In the first five books, Livy lays the groundwork for the history of Rome and sets forth a model for all of Rome to follow. For him, the “special and salutary benefit of the study of history is to behold evidence of every sort of behaviour set forth as on a splendid memorial; from it you may select for yourself and for your country what to emulate, from it what to avoid, whether basely begun or basely concluded.” (Livy 4). Livy, however, denies the general populace the right to make the same sort of conclusions that he made in

Instead of leaving Pompeii to dissolve into history, educational researchers such as National Geographic have continued conducting studies about the fall of Pompeii, because forgetting about the historical event would be detrimental to further knowledge on Roman culture in Italy. Life under Mount Vesuvius was full of promise and prosperity for the newly settled Greeks in the 8th century B.C. The vast area around the towering volcano attracted lots of people seeking a paradise-like land for their vacation needs. Along with Pompeii’s paradise attraction, the rich volcanic soil gave way to agricultural growth for the Greek settlers. Mount Vesuvius's overhang gave the settlers a sense of protection and security. Once early settlement gave way and the very basic foundations of civilization began to grow, Greek colonies soon established themselves in Campania along with the Etruscans.

As I walked onto our Amsterdam bound plane in PDX, I couldn’t help but think about what I would have the privilege of seeing. In the next week and a half, I would visit the Acropolis in Athens, Epidaurus- the first amphitheater and major healing center, Ancient Olympia- the sight of the first ever Olympics, Pompeii and the world-famous Roman Coliseum. I’ve been many to many places: Hawaii, New York, Boston, Washington D.C, and Honduras, but I’d never been as excited to travel somewhere as I was then. Without the inspiration of some of the places I would be visiting, our world would be very different than the world we know. We might not have track races, theater programs, sporting stadiums or many other fixtures of life.
Americans relate to Ancient Rome because of their Republican government, liberal arts and sciences, and class system. When making an Ancient Rome film many of the times they include actual themes occurring in today’s society, whether it may be low key or a prominent part of today's society, such as racism or religious identities. Hyper-masculinity comes into play for both films Pompeii and Quo Vadis as they both center around the ideas of power. In Pompeii, Milo wants power in order to rise against Pompeii’s class system. He wants vengeance for being stripped away from this power which resulted in his slavery. In Quo Vadis, Lygia and Vinicius strive for Christianity to be the central power for Rome. Pompeii and Quo Vadis both depict
In fact, the entire city seems to have vanished. Pompeii is buried under 12 feet of rock. Within a few decades, Pompeii is all but forgotten, wiped off the face of the Earth.

In 79 CE the ancient city of Pompeii was subjected to the famous catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The city was mostly destroyed and buried under a deep layer of volcanic ash in the aftermath of the eruption. Although a tragic event, the site has become an unprecedented archaeological goldmine in the sense that many significant artifacts were very well preserved. The preservation of the city has provided archaeologists and historians a greater insight of the everyday life of an ancient civilization. One person in particular found immense excitement in her journey through the site of Pompeii.
The historical context of Pompeii is the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 CE that did significant damage to the city of Pompeii and Herculaneum, a town northwest of Pompeii. The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, an active volcano situated near the Bay of Naples, occurred on August 24, 79 CE. The volcanic eruption

Daily life in Pompeii is much like today because there is ancient fast food, many people played different roles, but it was a non-gadget world.
