Hurricane Sandy Hurricane Sandy was the deadliest and most destructive hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. The winds got up to 115 miles per hour. This hurricane affected the Greater Antilles, Eastern United States, Bermuda, Bahamas, and Eastern Canada (Sharp). I already knew that Hurricane Sandy was in 2012. I think it was located in the Atlantic Ocean, near canada. When this happened I was in the seventh grade, and i was in school. I wanted and needed to know more about how this tragic situation happened. Where exactly did this happen? What caused this to happened? What time is the most accurate to go off of , when it all happened? What maybe triggered this incident? What was all damaged? How many houses were destroyed? How many people were injured ? Did any people disappear? If so how many? What precautions are they using to avoid another …show more content…
All the states that are on the coast had to redo 80% of the roads. Over two million households in the state of New Jersey lost power in the storm, 346,000 homes were damaged or destroyed, but 8,100,000 homes lost power. The outages affected people in seven-teen states, as far west as Michigan. Four weeks after the storm 25,000,000,000 dollars was the estimated dollar value of the lost business activity , according to financial analysis firm IHS Global Insight. Estimates as of 2015 assessed damage to have been about 75,000,000,000 dollars ("Hurricane Sandy Fast Facts"). Families were separated and some people now had no families. Most of the families finally met back up but not everyone was that fortunate. During the storm a man had gotten took into the storm and was in the water up to five hours. The man had started to get hypothermia, and just knew he was gonna die. THis man found a house and it was not flooded and decided to break into the house and the story says he had wrote a letter to the family and left it on the door. The note
The damages were catastrophic as houses lay in ruin and debris littered the roads. There were mudslides and fallen rocks that paved the roads and made them impassible for vehicles to get through. Ultimately by the roads being clogged up the response time by rescue workers and essential personal were hampered. This also made it exceptionally difficult for supplies to be rushed to the locations for the earthquake survivors. As some were digging and excavating for survivors they were being halted by aftershocks and falling debris from above. Approximately 8000 people were killed either by their houses caving in or by the other disasters this earthquake triggered. It was a real life tragedy that
The 9/11 incident had a lot of people lost no one actually knew what really happened at first. A lot of people were confused and shocked people didn’t know what to think all they could really do was assume. So the town evacuated it took tons of boats to get the people off of the island.
The attacks were conducted on a Tuesday morning, September 11th, 2001. Flight 11 was crashed into floors 93-99 of the World Trade Center’s North Tower. United Airlines Flight 175 was hijacked and crashed into floors 77-85 of the South tower of the World Trade Center. 343 firefighters (FDNY) personnel were killed battling the blazes caused by the massive explosions of jet fuel. Later that morning, Flight 77 was crashed into the west section of the Pentagon, a major military operations center in Washington, DC.
On September 11th 2001 terrorists attacked the Twin Towers. About 2,996 people died including 19 terrorists. This sad place is now replaced with the 911 memorial and museum. This place has wonderful geographic features such as waterfall and the names of the people who died. Yes this a sad place but about 4 million people visited in less than one year.

Recently and historically hurricanes have caused catastrophic amounts of damage to individuals, property, and society as a whole. Given this immense amount of destruction caused by hurricanes, a president’s response to these storms is not only extraordinarily significant but necessary for society to recover from the damage. Not only does the president need to provide aid and support to the victims affected directly by these hurricanes, but also unite America in these times of crisis. A president’s ability to deal with these dire situations is crucial to their success and a representation of their leadership skills. Hurricane Maria and Hurricane Sandy were both similar storms that resulted in contrasting results. Two deadly storms with two very different responses: one from Obama and the other from Trump. President Obama’s response to Hurricane Sandy was swift and respectful, while Trump’s to Maria was sluggish and demeaning to the people of Puerto Rico, demonstrating the contrast between Obama’s heart and intellect and Trump’s idiocy and heartlessness.
Nor’easters are the most common type of coastal storm that affects Connecticut. This type of coastal storm has wind speeds and surges that are lower than from hurricanes, however, they can still inflict a substantial amount of damage because they extend over broader areas and last over numerous tidal cycles. This type of coastal storm is most rampant between December and March (Gornitz et al., 2004). Two recent nor’easters that have hit Connecticut took place between October 31–November 1 of 1991 and December 11–12, 1992, and Milford was among the hardest-hit communities (floodwaters 10 to 12 feet above normal) (Gornitz et al., 2004). The nor’easter storms also caused major coastal flooding, disrupted transportation, and power outages. On the other hand, hurricanes are less frequent than nor’easters coastal storms in Connecticut and form over warm water. In recent years, Hurricane Sandy in 2012 cost Connecticut almost $400 million in damages (Frumhoff et al., 2007). Likewise, many people were unable to access electricity from CT energy suppliers and the hurricane also affected the people from the lower and middle-class communities. Most of the agricultural features in Connecticut were negatively impacted, including shellfish production. Infrastructure items such as dams and levees, transportation, and facilities and buildings were also damaged. The
At 8:46 am, the tragedy of the nation took place with the death of 2,977 people as a result. The three American landmarks were attacked so suddenly, only taking
Hurricane Sandy started off as a small storm, but quickly grew to be a large and powerful hurricane that caused major destruction to the Caribbean islands and East Coast of the United Sates of America. On October 19, 2012, a tropical depression formed in the Caribbean Sea by Venezuela. In a matter of five days, the tropical depression gained speed and became known as Hurricane Sandy. Hurricane Sandy caused high wind speeds, rain, and even snow in all East Coast states, especially New Jersey. On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy made landfall in Atlantic City, New Jersey with peak wind speeds measuring just over 220 miles per hour. At this point, people who thought that they would wait the storm out realized what a
At 8:46am United Airline flight #11 crashed right into floors 93-99 killing everybody on board and hundreds of people in the tower. And at 9:03am a second United Airlines plane crashed into the floors 78-84 of the second tower. Also on that day, a plane attacked
Hurricane Sandy made a devastating landfall along the coast of New Jersey (McCallum, Wicklein, Reiser, Busciolano, Morrison, Verdi, Painter & Frantz, 2012). However, the origin of the hurricane was quite removed from that location. The core instigation of Hurricane Sandy originated off of the west coast of Africa in the southwestern Caribbean Sea. It started off rather weak, a category one on the Saffir-Simpson’s scale. The storm became a stronger category three as it moved towards the island of Cuba, and then weakened to a category one again as it traveled north through the Bahamas. On the journey from the Bahamas to the
One gentleman spoke of him as a child seeing thousands of crawfish crossing the main road. He said his grandmother told him that meant that there was wind coming. Other survivors spoke of the events that took place and watching their family members get swept away and there was nothing that they could do but watch in horror. Another gentleman spoke of how he saw a lot of his friends he went to school with he had to help identify some of the people who perished and spoke of they had the look of fear on their faces. Also some family members were found scattered about some miles away from where they were last
As the Assistant Administrator of National Preparedness with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (F.E.M.A.) when Super Storm Sandy made landfall on October 29, 2012, in New Jersey it brought with it storm surges of more than 11 feet, killing more than 100 people (including 43 in New York of which 34 occurred in Queens and Staten Island), destroying or damaging thousands of homes, and leaving more than 8 million people without power.
1) Why did this tragedy occur and what are the root causes of this disaster?
Hurricane Sandy was a tropical cyclone that devastated portions of the Caribbean, Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States in late October 2012. The eighteenth named storm and tenth hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, Sandy was the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, as measured by diameter, with winds spanning 1,100 miles. Sandy is estimated in early calculations to have caused damage of at least $20 billion. Preliminary estimates of losses that include business interruption surpass $50 billion, which, if confirmed, would make it the second-costliest Atlantic hurricane in history, behind only Hurricane Katrina.
