Last night on NBC, viewers saw a delightful blast of a colorful cast that included newcomer Maddie Baillio as Tracy Turnblad in the first television adaptation of Hairspray Live!. Hairspray is musical taking place in the 1960s, a time of racial tension. It’s about a young, curvy, sassy teen blends together races with the power of song and dance. Only a sophomore in high school, she brought such a simple glimmer of sunshine to the nighttime program. Maddie excelled as a newbie to the acting business, and I hope to see her career take full flight after this wonderful experience.
The character Tracy Turnblad has a sassy sway to compliment her curvaceous figure. She walks with her broad chest out. The actress strutted with confidence as if every moment she was ready to conquer the world. She appears as a shorter girl, but the strides that she takes were like those of a true born leader. The opening number “Good Morning Baltimore” automatically awakens the audience to how gleeful and optimistic young Ms.Turnblad is a person. She sashays down the streets outside of her home on her way to school and delivers a sweet belt of the melody from her pure lungs. This is the magic of theater I love to see.

Of course, this is heard through her sweetly, soprano voice. Her voice was a bit squeaky at certain times, but she often drew back and loosened the level of perkiness. She sang and spoke a reasonable pace to where you could understand each and every word she sang or spoke. She dazzled in one of my favorite tunes from the musical “Without Love”, a song about how it would feel to be like without newfound, forbidden love. Tracy and Link begin the song with an innocent angst to get close to each other as they are separated due to Tracy’s brief stint in a jail cell. Her vivid, charming voice rang simply beautiful in this

Penny, Tracy’s bestfriend, does not conform to society because she dates an African American, which in the time the show takes place was not accepted by society. Tracy’s mom also embraces her individuality by not caring what other people think of her. “And if you don’t like the way I look, well, I just don’t give a da**.” I chose this song because the Transcendentalist principles are demonstrated in this song but more importantly the whole show. I loved this Broadway show and after learning about Transcendentalists, this whole show portrays the Transcendentalist beliefs.
The crowd was cheerful that she showed up. The cast of Negro Day were on set but watching from the sidelines. One the dancer’s little sisters, Little Inez, was a great dancer but was never going to be seen because their show got cancelled. While Tracy was on stage dancing with the cast of the Corny Collins show and saw Little Inez in the wings and invited her to come dance with them. In that moment, history was made in that town.
