In 1962, Tracy Turnblad is a heavyset high school student living in Baltimore. Along with her classmate Penny Pingleton, Tracy watches The Corny Collins Show, a local teen dancing television show. Her Father, Paul Franulovich immigrated from Yugoslavia in the 1940’s when he was 14 years old and went straight into high school, not speaking a word of english. My Papa loved this town with all of his heart and never wanted to leave the island. My Grandmother, Bertha Franulovich was born in a small village in southeast Alaska. Liz Loecher is our newest addition to the food and beverage team, she comes to us from Finca in downtown Salt Lake. A native of California, Liz attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, which gave her both a bachelors and a healthy love of mountains. In 2008 this passion took her to Alaska to ski for “just one season”, that season lasted almost nine years.

Amanda Ard, freshman, is involved in the Red White Brigade band at Fort Osage High School. She plays the clarinet, and has been in band for four years. During her eighth grade school year, she got to participate in two festivals, one held at Blue Springs South and one held at Worlds of Fun. “It’s kind of nerve wracking because there are a lot of people and schools, and you don't get to see the judges, but I can shut them out. Being with the team and knowing we’ll do good helps,” says Ard.

Diana Nyad is well known for swimming from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage; her experience can teach others to see the world and themselves in a whole new perspective. Although she accomplished her goal, it took Nyad a total of five attempts in order to successfully swim from Cuba to Florida. Her fifth and final attempt to make this journey took her approximately fifty-three hours. The distance was over 110 miles, which broke the world record for the distance swam without the protection of a shark cage. Even though Nyad went through hard times during her expedition, she never gave up on herself. Her experience plays a large role in not only how people see the world, but the way they see themselves too.
On May 5th, 1997 Nora Robinson was born in Brooklyn, New York. She grew up with her single-parent mother, who was her best crony. Her house abutted Clarkson Avenue, which is the same street her mom grew up on. Laura Dewey Bridgman was born on December 21, 1829, in Hanover, New Hampshire. Her parents were farmers in New England. According to an account by her mother, Laura began her life as “a lively, intelligent, extremely curious child who had at 18 months begun to ‘talk quite plain’ and learn a few letters of the alphabet” (Mahoney). At only two years old, however, Laura contracted scarlet fever for several weeks. During this illness, she lost her senses of, sight and hearing, and most of her senses of taste and smell. This severe loss of senses made it difficult for Laura to communicate with her family and she soon forgot how to speak.

Lily Dale formally known as Lily Dale Assembly, is a small town located on a lake in New York, about an hour south of Buffalo. The ghost town was founded in 1879 as the Cassadaga Lake Free Association. It took its current in in 1906, named for the lilies covering Cassadaga Lake.
