There have been many individuals who have found success despite adversity in their life. For my example I chose someone who has made several works of art: Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, better known as Tom Cruise. Being one of my favorite actors, Tom Cruise has produced and starred in over thirty blockbuster movies including Top Gun, Oblivion, War of the Worlds and The Firm. The little known aspect about Tom is that he had a very hard life growing up. He was born on July 3, 1962 in Syracuse, New York, to his mother Mary and father Thomas Mapother. Due to his father’s career, Tom was forced to move around very often, leaving him little time to develop friends or other relationships. At the age of 11 his parents divorced and he went with his mother
Some of the most successful people of all time have had to overcome a plethora of difficulties throughout their life to achieve their goals. A few examples of people who demonstrate this include Thomas Edison, Bo Jackson, and Ludwig van Beethoven. Thomas Edison came up from nearly nothing and was able to create over one thousand patents. Bo Jackson had a very tough childhood and a lot of injuries in his professional baseball and football careers. Ludwig van Beethoven was told that he would never be a great composer but managed to compose an astounding number of influential works, some while completely deaf.
A famous example of somebody that defeats a hardship is Cristiano Ronaldo. As a kid, he had a dream to be a professional soccer player but, he got a severe heart disease called racing heart disease. When he recovered, the doctor told him he couldn’t play anymore. However, this didn’t stop him from completing his dream. He went on to play professionally and became one of the best soccer players to ever live and also broke many
The Roman poet Horace states that “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” By this, he explains the role these hardships play in shaping and developing a person’s character. I agree that adversity not only elicits talents, but also brings out the hidden aptitudes within a person that which they were unaware of before. Through learning experiences and observations, I have witnessed the significant outcomes that come from the result of adversities.
In life obstacles may get in our way when trying to achieve success, but do not quit. People from many cultures all over the world long to show the greatness on the inside of them. In life it does not matter what walk of life you come from, but the walk you take is what defines the future. Success does not come from being rich, poor or having a love for a certain sport. Hard work perseverance, and dedication always play an important factor when one is trying to achieve a specific goal or gain success, not being rich or poor. Tyler Perry is successful actor, producer, screenwriter, and play writer, that has blessed Americans through his amazing works. Success comes from having a mind frame of who you are and where you want to be.
Hardships have the power to make a break a person, as Roman poet, Horace, once said, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant”. Everyone has or will have to face adversity at some point in their lives, it is a universal truth. Although misfortunes usually have a negative connotation, depending on the struggle and how one deals with it, it is likely the person will come out of misfortune better prepared for the world. Contrastly, if a person never experienced any hardships, they would lack a sophisticated understanding of the world and lack the ability to handle difficult situations. Adversity gives people strength they can not obtain with success.
Hardships portray and elicit abilities that, in times of prosperity, might not have been performable. Hardships include relationship, friendship, mental, and physical challenges that cause stress. In these types of situations, one would be forced to think of a situation and act upon it in order to move on and prosper. The quote “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant. ”-Horace, is one I agree with.
Without overcoming adversity Jim Abbott would never be the first baseball player with only one hand.Malala Yousafzai would have never brought attention to girls education. Many of the runners from the Boston Marathon would have never ran the race again, and even never race again their life. Adversity, is hard to overcome, but ask is it worth it in the
In addition, there are many examples of successful people. Gabby Douglas started gymnastics around the age of eight, and while she faced very many obstacles, she was still successful. Donald Trump was billions of dollars in debt, but worked hard and is now the largest real estate developer in New York. Zendaya Coleman was shy when she was younger, but is now a triple
One situation in which I overcame adversity is making b-team basketball for White Knoll High School. Basketball has always been a love of mine. I first fell in love with basketball when I went to an Atlanta Hawks game with my dad when I was 5. Afterwards, my dad purchased a basketball goal to go over the garage and we spent most our weekends playing in the driveway. The next year my dad signed me up for a recreational league in the area, and I played in the same league for 5 years. My dad was my very first coach. The pride he'd have on the sidelines when I made shots or played good defense forever cemented my love for the game of basketball.
I know that success comes from failure from hearing famous people's stories. Knowing other peoples stories will want you to learn from your failures. Thomas Edison, Katy Perry, and Jim Carry are just a few of the many people who have found success from failure.
Many people throughout history have also faced adversity and have been resilient through it. For example, Tyler Perry; he had a terrible childhood, he was physically and sexually abused as a child, kicked out of high school, and tried to commit suicide twice in his lifetime. Still, through all his hardships, he produced and starred in his first theater production, I Know I’ve Been Changed, which failed. Therefore he obtained odd jobs to pay for the production; finally on the seventh run the show broke through. Through all his hardships he never gave up and today has a successful career as a writer, director, and actor. Oprah Winfrey also endured a rough childhood because of sexual abuse, she had a child at fourteen who passed away two weeks after. She continued on to finish high school with honors and get a scholarship for college. She worked her way up from TV anchor to a creator of her own network. Scientist Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with ALS and through his colleague, friends, and family’s support he became a great scientist. Through his perseverance Hawking managed many accomplishments such as his published book on the theories of the Big Bang. Nelson Mandela was also a person with great resilience who dreamed of racial equality and spent 27 years in prison for it.
As he climbed the ladder to success, he faced a lot of adversity in his life.
Bill Gates was not always successful; in fact, he began as a failure. He dropped out of Harvard and went bankrupt in the first business he started. That being said, he did eventually create Microsoft and become a multi-billionaire. Walt Disney was fired as a newspaper editor because “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” He later went on to create the company known as Disney. Albert Einstein did not begin speaking until he was four and did not know how to read until he was seven. He was expelled from his first school and was refused admittance to the Zurich Polytechnic School. Einstein later won the Nobel Prize for physics. All of these people persisted and achieved their goals, when others would have given up if they were in their shoes. This goes to show that anyone can achieve anything.

People always say that hard working makes people success and there are always examples of how some people reverse their destinies and become successful. In the book The Alchemist, Santiago, a young boy follows his passion and find his treasure. During Santiago’s journey, he encounters difficulties, danger and challenges. But he never gives up, so as expected, he is successful. In reality, Harrison Ford did not start his career until his thirties. J.K. Rowling started writing novels at the age of 31, and now is the most famous female writer. And Ang Lee, who was a jobless house husband, but started being a director when he was 31. All the inspirational stories teach people that people need to have dream, it is never too late and if people work hard enough, he will reach his dream. However, these stories do not tell people how much they need to sacrifice and how little chance they become successful.
