Resilience People have learned to be resilient in order to overcome serious hardships. A person’s resilience can be seen through how they handle bad experiences; to be resilient in the face of adversity. People who never give up and always fight back even when it gets hard are resilient. Some believe that resilience is a trait that can be learned. In the article “Bouncing Back” by Melissa Balmain; she writes about different people’s hardships and how they learned to be resilient because of their tenacious experiences. Balmain recounts Jennifer Loredo, a master sergeant in the army who was serving in Afghanistan with her husband when a roadside bomb left her without a husband and raising two kids on her own. Many people throughout history have also faced adversity and have been resilient through it. For example, Tyler Perry; he had a terrible childhood, he was physically and sexually abused as a child, kicked out of high school, and tried to commit suicide twice in his lifetime. Still, through all his hardships, he produced and starred in his first theater production, I Know I’ve Been Changed, which failed. Therefore he obtained odd jobs to pay for the production; finally on the seventh run the show broke through. Through all his hardships he never gave up and today has a successful career as a writer, director, and actor. Oprah Winfrey also endured a rough childhood because of sexual abuse, she had a child at fourteen who passed away two weeks after. She continued on to finish high school with honors and get a scholarship for college. She worked her way up from TV anchor to a creator of her own network. Scientist Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with ALS and through his colleague, friends, and family’s support he became a great scientist. Through his perseverance Hawking managed many accomplishments such as his published book on the theories of the Big Bang. Nelson Mandela was also a person with great resilience who dreamed of racial equality and spent 27 years in prison for it. When it comes to honor and certainty, resilience is a key part of obtaining and keeping these attributes. Getting through hard times is what matters most in a world full of sadness.
Resilience is about how an individual deals, resists, recovers and learns from adversity’s in life. If a child is resilient they are less likely to be damaged as a result of negative experiences and are more likely to learn from and move on. A good example of someone overcoming their environmental setbacks is Oprah Winfrey. Oprah had a difficult childhood. She lived in poverty and often dress in potato sacks to save money. When she went to school she was bullied for not having normal clothing. She was also sexually abused at an early age then had a baby only for it to pass way shortly after at the age of 14. Throughout history there has always been adversity, even today there are people who struggle to cope with it in their everyday lives, but some are able to overcome it as individuals and move on. But sometimes there are situations so adverse it takes more than one person to overcome mentally and/or physically.
When I heard a term called resilience, I have no idea about it and think that it is not related to me. After I had a lecture with a topic resilience. I realize it is necessary and I need to face many adversity in my life. Also, I remember something happened in my past are shown my resilience level. I would like to share the story in my life to show the factors which are indicated in the last part can show resilience level.
Resilience can be a difficult and often a seemingly impossible attribute to acquire for many people in fear of change. I have become aware of this trait developing more in myself as I get older and have made it a priority to see the benefits of change and adapt to it. Resilience is a quality that I pride myself in encompassing, and it has in multiple ways, what has defined me as a student. Though both personally and academically, I suffered multiple setbacks, they have never succeeded in distracting me from my future ambitions. Over these numerous years as a student, gaining many insights, I have learned that spending weeks mourning failures is not an option and is ultimately ineffective. When I receive a less than adequate grade, or face problems in extracurriculars, in those moments of weakness, I may bend and stretch, however, it will never define me. We as human beings, some or the other day have undergone to situations or events which have changed our lives. Such events can be like death of our loved one, loss of the job, serious health issue, terrorism or shocking incidents. These events are very challenging experiences of life and to these situations or circumstances we react with a flood of emotions and a sense of uncertainty. In this unit I have learnt about the importance of Resilience. I believe the most important aspects of resiliency are appreciation, optimism, and coping with stress. To be resilient is to bounce back in the face of adversity, depression, tragedy, and other sources of stress. It’s a cycle that many people get stuck in until they pick themselves back up. You experience, you feel, you fail, you hurt, and you fall. But, you keep on going anyways. Mandy Oaklander conveys that humans tend to stress over everything.
