When Scout is being made fun of by Aunt Alexandra, she stands up for the fact that she doesn't want to act very “girly”. A quote from the book talks about how Scout did not the act the way Aunty wanted: “‘When I appeared in the doorway, Aunty would look as if she regretted her request; I was usually mud-splashed or covered with sand,’”(Lee 149). This is Physical bravery and moral courage. Physical bravery because he put his own life in front of hers. This courage is moral because he wanted to do something so he could keep his own family safe. He is starting to become more like Atticus and realizing how much more responsibility he now has. Jem had so much courage to save Scout and put his life before hers, and he has really grown up from the beginning of the book. He sees that Scout is strong and can stand up for herself. This example is shown at the end of chapter seventeen when Scout is able to get the mob to leave and Atticus was safe (Lee 176). This may not seem like an example, but Jem decided not to make Scout leave because he knew that she would be able to do some convincing. This is moral courage when Jem has to put his own feelings aside because he knows the right thing to do will let Scout grow up and stand up by herself. These are two examples that both show how Jem put himself
