The Outsiders Timeline Project
Brief Summary of the Setting, Conflict, and Main Characters.
In Tulsa, Oklahoma the society is divided by Socials (High Class) otherwise known as Socs, Middle Class, and Greasers (Low Class). The Socs and Greasers always get in fights with each other because they cannot accept each other. The main character is Ponyboy. He is fourteen and a Greaser that faces his troubles with his group’s help. His best friend is Johnny. Everyone in the group loves Johnny because he keeps everyone together. Ponyboy lives with his two brothers. One of his brothers is Sodapop who is known as the good looking one. He is understanding and gets along with Ponyboy. Darry is “tuff” and smart. He always picks on Ponyboy. In Greaser language, there are two words that are tough they just mean different things. “Tough is the same as rough; tuff means cool, sharp.”
Two-Bit is another member of their group. He is funny and the biggest thief of all of them. His name is Two-Bit because he talks a lot and always gets his two-bits in. He is very proud of his black-handled

While they were watching the stars they fell asleep. Johnny woke Ponyboy up and Ponyboy ran home, but Johnny stayed. When Ponyboy got home Darry was yelling at him about how late he got home because it was two in the morning and his curfew was twelve. Darry was yelling about how Ponyboy doesn’t use his head, how he doesn’t think about how it can affect others, and how he always says he didn’t mean to. Sodapop said “Darry….”, but then Darry cut him off and is tired of him always sticking up for Ponyboy. Then Ponyboy screamed don’t you yell at him! Then Darry slapped Ponyboy across the face so hard he got knocked to the door. It got very quiet. Darry looked at how red his palm was and looked at Ponyboy. Ponyboy ran out the door as he ran Darry screamed “Pony, I didn’t mean to!” Ponyboy ran to the lot where Johnny
This may seem harsh, but Darry has been through sorrow and grief and that changes a man. Everyone has a breaking point, so when Ponyboy runs away Darry’s negative views on Ponyboy change. "You must think at school with all those good grades you bring home and you've always got your nose in a book, but do you ever use your head for common sense? No sirree, bub. And if you did have to go by yourself, you should have carried a blade.
In the text on page 50 it states, “He should never yell at Soda. No one should ever holler at my brother. "You don't yell at him!" I shouted. Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door.” This is when the relationship took a turn for the worse, Darry out of anger hit Ponyboy because Ponyboy got home extremely late. On page 50 it also states, “It was plain to me that Darry didn’t want me around. And I wouldn’t stay if he did. He wasn’t ever going to hit me again.” This shows that the one little mistake that Darry made, is the end of the straw for Ponyboy. On pg 51, it states "He didn't use to be like that... we used to get along okay... before Mom and Dad died. Now he just can't stand me.” This shows that Darry is struggling to cope with the loss of his mom and died as much as the others. He feels that it is his job to be like the parent, and because of Ponyboy being the youngest, he gets to have the “parent” Darry and not the “brother” Darry, their relationship with each other suffers from
The first reason why Ponyboy should have stayed home even though Darry hit him is the murder that occurred early would not of happened. Because Ponyboy has ran away after that happened, he met Johnny and they went to the park. While
Then Ponyboy runs out the door, finds Johnny, and goes to the park. There, however, the two young greasers run into randy and bob, with a huge group of their Socs friends. One of the Socs friends hold pony boy’s head under a cold water fountain, and Ponyboy blacks out. When he comes to, he is lying on the ground next to Johnny. The bloody corps of bob is next to them. To save Ponyboy, Johnny had to kill bob.
Darry disciplined Ponyboy out of the reason caring about him. “Darry would kill me if I got into trouble
In this book, There are the Greasers and there are the Socs. There is a very fine line between the two groups. The Socs are the Rich ones driving around in fancy cars, and living in the West Side is the reason for it. The Greasers, on the other hand, live in the East Side, considered the poor side. The book follows a Greaser by the name of P.C who has alway felt like an outsider. Most Greasers love Fights and trouble, But Ponyboy has a passion for reading and sunsets, the complete opposite. He has never really talked to anyone about it, besides one of his brothers, Sodapop and his friend Johnny Cade. During the very big disagreements and differences
“The Outsiders”, by S.E. Hinton, is centered around Ponyboy’s path to maturity and the life lessons he learns along the way. The novel follows Ponyboy, a greaser, and his gang’s conflict with the Socials, a rival gang. In it, he learns to not judge people hastily and reject gang mentality. Ponyboy also loses his innocence. The following paragraphs will explore his growth throughout “The Outsiders”.
At the end of the book Ponyboy finally comes to terms with the deaths of Johnny and Dally, and he finally realizes that violence is not the answer when he makes up with Darry. Darry and Ponyboy are shouting at each other, and Ponyboy asks Sodapop to take his side. This causes Sodapop to rush out of the house, and Ponyboy and Darry chase after him. When they finally catch up Sodapop tells them he feels sick of being pulled apart by their fights. Ponyboy sympathizes with Sodapop as he says in the text: “Darry and I did play tug of war with him, with never a thought to how much it was hurting him.” Ponyboy suddenly understands what his fighting with Darry has done to Sodapop, and later in their conversation Ponyboy realizes why he never got along with Darry: “I saw that I had expected Darry to do all the understanding without even trying to
To begin with, the setting takes place in multiple areas. Which makes the storyline change constantly and becoming different as the setting changes and the time of the day or night. “The park was about two blocks square, with a fountain in the middle and a small swimming pool for the little kids…” P. 53 This setting was huge to the story because this is where the main plot is occurring, this setting and place and time was the exact moment where everything began to go down. “ ‘ Pony , I didn’t mean to!’ but I was already at the lot by then and pretended I couldn’t hear.” P. 50. When Darry hit Ponyboy, Ponyboy knew that he
Darry Is ponyboy and Sodas older brother. Ponyboy thinks that Darry doesn’t love him because he’s always yelling at him, or he’s always yelling at him for the smallest of things without knowing the reason as to why he’s always on Ponyboy’s case. Pony always talks about how Soda rarely ever gets into trouble and how he thinks Darry loves him more than anyone else, everyone else always says that Darry does love him but Ponyboy is the type of boy that has to see or hear something from that person in order for him to believe what everyone else is saying.
He jumped off the bed and started running down stairs. " Hey everybody Ponyboy li" I put my hand over his mouth. Then that started a wrestling match. Soda won but it was fun. I plunked down on the couch to catch my breath. "I guess I won't tell people Pony". After he said that everybody in the living room wanted to know what he was talking about. Darry even spent 5 minutes tickling him, but Soda stayed strong.
After the death of the Curtis’ parents Darry as the eldest took on the role of the leader of the family, which at times caused disagreements and disputes over what was right. Ponyboy always felt Darry only cared about Sodapop and he was treated harshly and unfairly. Towards the end of the novel Ponyboy begins to see Darry’s true intentions and becomes appreciative. This realisation occurs when Darry arrives at the hospital overly concerned about Ponyboy’s condition, in a state Ponyboy had never seen him in before. He was no longer emotionless and for the first time in years he was crying, Ponyboy then realised ‘Darry did care about me, maybe as much as he cared about Soda, and because he cared he was trying too hard to make something of me. When he yelled “Ponyboy, where have you been all this time?” he meant “Ponyboy you’ve scared me to death. Please be careful because I couldn’t stand if anything happened to you”’ (pg.120). After losing his parents Darry had changed, he lived in fear of losing someone else he cared about which is why he often seemed harsh on Ponyboy, when all he wanted for him was to stay safe. Ponyboy’s realisation changed the way he thought about Darry, he realised he was trying to stop him from becoming a stereotypical hood with no motive in life influenced him to became thankful and appreciative for the discipline Darry implied. Darry’s anger was taken out on Ponyboy with the intention of keeping

The story kicks off with Pony leaving theater trying to find something to do for that day. That night he, Dally, and Johnny snuck into the drive-in. There they met two girls Cherri and Marca. Dally went over to harass them, trying to get some play. Cherri was not falling for his game and told him to “Get lost, hood” (Hinton). This caused Johnny and Pony Boy to get him stop. Dally went off to get sodas to let the girls “cool off”
