Therapeutic Communication
Sommer et al. (2013) Communication is an interactive process between two or more people who send and receive messages to each other. The following is a simplified sample of communication; stimulus for information, comfort or advice, the sender initiates contact, the message is sent or expressed, variety of media used such as hearing, visual, touch or smell used and then feedback is received. Factors that affect communication vary such as personal (emotional, social, cultural, language differences), environmental (background noise, lack of privacy or proper accommodation), and relationship factors (communication influenced by status) can interfere with communication. The interview being discussed is the infamous James Brown interview on Friedman Live! In LA that occurred in May 1988 after James Brown was arrested in South Carolina on charges of fleeing the police after his wife had called the police fearing for her safety. The interview was a two-way live on air interview over television between reporter Friedman Friedman and James Brown. Brown

Friedman asked Brown about how all the trouble with his spouse began in which Brown decided to digress from the question to talk about his tour. Friedman agrees with Brown and asks questions about the tour instead. Friedman changed the topic which is a barrier to effective communication. Friedman also states during an exchange saying, “the women love you when you’re out there James” in which Brown responded with “I look good. Smell good. Make love good”. Friedman in this instance offered a personal opinion to Brown. Friedman at times used excessive questioning as well. Halter (2014) stated excessive questioning can be asking multiple questions consecutively or rapidly. It casts the nurse in the role of interrogator who demands information without respect for the patient’s willingness or readiness to
According to Schwartz (2001), communication can be said to be the process that involves the sending and receipt of messages of information among individuals. The communication process consists of two things. It involves the sending and receipt of a message. The message sent and received can be classified into two broad categories. These categories include non-verbal and verbal messages.
i asked her brief questions about her name and how she was to get acquainted with her and build rapport. Asking questions helps facilitate a dialogue and encourages the client to talk and tell their story Miller (2006). The client seemed tense and uneasy and spoke with a very high tone of voice when she greeted me and introduced herself. When asked about the main reason for turning to therapy, she started fidgeting and looked unsettled; this could be because of the unfamiliar environment or she was not sure if she trusted me enough to tell me her story. Either way, I remained silent whilst maintaining eye contact to give her the space, time she needed in order to settle down and work out what she wanted to bring to the session.
Communication involves the exchange of messages and is a process which all individuals participate in. Whether it is through spoken word, written word, non-verbal means or even silence, messages are constantly being exchanged between individuals or groups of people (Bach & Grant 2009). All behaviour has a message and communication is a process which individuals cannot avoid being involved with (Ellis et al 1995).
Human relations skills are translated into social and therapeutic communications when there is contact with persons seeking attention. Social communication requires nonspecific professional skills. For instance, I may offer assistance to an elderly gentleman removing his coat in the waiting area, or I may dry the tears of a child who has just had an injection. Therapeutic professional communication requires specific, well defined professional skills. When I instruct a client regarding preparation for a nasogastric intubation, or when I explain the billing procedures to a new client, specific, well-defined professional skills are being used. Therapeutic professional communication takes place between a person who has a specific need and me as
Another positive communication method was when Anne, the nurse, spoke to her patient. She used simple language instead of medical terminology.
Communication is defined as ‘a transactional process involving participants who occupy different but overlapping environments and create relationships through the exchange of messages, many of which are affected by external, psychological and physiological noise’ (Adler, R and Proctor, R. 2010). Communication doesn’t just mean verbal communication, as non-verbal communication is just as, if not, more important as verbal communication. According to Albert Mehrabian, only 7% of a message is communicated through verbal communication, 38% is communicated through your tone of
Though there are many interpersonal relationships of circumstance formed in the show House, people can be coworkers and/or have a patient-physician relationship without forming an interpersonal relationship. (Beebe et al. 2005) Dr. House is a perfect example of this. Dr. House may have a patient for weeks and not even so much as talk to them. The other doctors on the show talk to their patients and get to know them for the purpose of learning about their medical history. In doing this they usually find some common ground which forms the foundation for an interpersonal relationship. However, Dr. House avoids talking to his patients at all because he believes they just lie. While brainstorming about treatment options for a patient in the pilot episode, Dr. House says, “If we don’t talk to them (the patients) they can’t lie to us and we can’t lie to them.” (Jacobs K., Shore D., Attanasio P., Singer B., 2004) By choosing not to talk to his patients Dr. House forgoes any chance of developing an interpersonal relationship with his patients.
Physical symptoms and personal life changes may lead to emotional dysfunction and can result in worsening the patient’s health if not taken seriously and give immediate help. Life changes are an important role in a person’s life and the perfect way to help the patient is being a great listener and supportive of the events that may occur. A person with serious symptoms and severe illnesses that will affect them for the rest of their life need a person to be there when others may not. Being emotionally supportive is part of working in the medical field and getting the right training may encourage the patient to have more hope and change their mood to being more positive.
The National Commission on Correctional Health Care defines therapeutic communication as “the face-to-face process of interacting that focuses on advancing the physical and emotional well being of a patient” (“Therapeutic Communication and Behavioral Management | National Commission on Correctional Health Care,” n.d.). Nurses use therapeutic communication to cultivate a trusting relationship with their patients and we provide encouragement to our patients for success with their treatment. Motivational interviewing is an important part of therapeutic communication. Patients are able to better understand problems within their life and identify ways to create positive changes through motivational interviewing (Brobeck, Bergh, Odencrants, & Hildingh, 2011). Motivational interviewing allows patients to identify behaviors that may be unhealthy through the guidance of a nurse. Support from the nurse
Communication is an ongoing process in which individuals exchange messages whose meanings are influenced by the history of the relationship and the experiences of the participants. (Adler, p.384) Communication depends on relationships between the people who are communicating, and on common basics between them. Problems in communications between people may arise due to differences in cultures, perceptions, values, and expectations from life.
Communication is the process of delivery or transfer of information or messages from one person to another person. This process of creating an understanding of other individuals about the information presented and would like this process requires an understanding that can be shared. When communication occurs, it impacts on the receiver and transmitter. There are various types of communication can occur between smiling, waving, touching, say hello, and so forth. However, the manner of communication can cause the meaning to be negative or positive information and the information will be mixed when disordered information delivery.
Therapeutic communication is considered the heart of family nursing practice (Deane, & Fain, 2016). Knowing the different types of communication is vital for nurses, as it delivers an effective relationship between nurse-client affiliation. Effective therapeutic communication is the main key to success.
Based on the text, communication is the process of sending and receiving messages that allows individuals to share their knowledge and skills. Although most individuals associate communication with speech, it has many other attributes, and it is mainly composed of two essential dimensions that include; verbal and nonverbal communication.

The importance in being able to effectively communicate with others is essential in our everyday lives. Although everyone participates in some process of communication, not everyone knows how to communicate well. Communication is a process involving the encoding and decoding of messages being sent and received by a source and receiver, respectively. Messages are sent through various channels, such as face-to-face interaction, electronic mail, text messages, and telephone. Depending upon the channel used to communicate a message, it may allow for the communication to be transactional or unilateral. All of this occurs within a certain context, and it may also include noise factors, such as cultural differences or physical distractions, that
