The women in American society of today are much more well treated then the women in the 1800s. Women now are able to raise a family on their own with a house, a full time job, able to vote, and participate in government. But back during the 1800s in the United States, women had nothing like that; they were only able to rely on their husband for support, while they stay at home and take care of the children of the household. Charlotte Perkins Stetson the author of "The Yellow Wallpaper" gives a perspective through the eyes of a mentally unstable wife of an oppressive authoritarian husband. Giving the story the main themes which would be sexism and oppression. The reasons the author wrote "The Yellow Wallpaper" was due to the fact after going through years of depression, she went and see the best specialist in the nation for help. What he told her to do to help cure what she was going through was too "live as domestic a life as far as possible,"(Gilman Why I Wrote ‘The Yellow Wallpaper.’) then proceed to say to her not to write ever again in her life. This advice the physician given to Gilman could mean that the writing may have been the cause of her depression. So, seeing the resemblance in the story, being which she was going against what she was recommended (or told in the story’s case; going against what she was told to do) and start writing. Again, highlighting how male dominant society was for creativity or freedom of expression, making it another thing that was made off limits to the female population back then. Making this conflict another example of person versus person since the author is having to go against the physician over whether or not she should write again, she eventually went against what he recommended to
