Thus, a significant number of features do not get a theatrical release, but are released directly to home video and other media.
According to the Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA), last year, films from independents received 79 overall Oscar nominations versus 42 for the majors, while in the top categories, indies had 21 nominations to 14 for the majors.
It is statistically apparent that independent features are highly regarded, and certainly on-trend.
Investing in the right feature film can produce solid returns and that these returns can be substantial over the short, medium and long terms. It is interesting to note that the number of distribution channels for movies in general has increased greatly over the past several years. Cable and PAY-TV systems as well as Video-on-Demand platforms are growing exponentially throughout the world. In recent years new cable channels have been launched to satisfy the increasing interest in independent features. Channels such as the Sundance Channel and the Independent Film Channel are devoted to free spirited independent films and other related features.
Because programming and media forms such as Live-streaming, DVD, and the Internet are now major movie-viewing sources, the producers will be careful
36). The cinema industry is being affected by the fast turnover rate of movies playing at the theatre to online releases, the increasing trend of online streaming of movies, and adopting sustainable practices. Cinemas are facing a more competitive environment due to the growing accessibility of home theatres and evolving consumer preferences. However, the major issue within the industry is the presence of online movie streaming becoming more popular. Canadians are presented with many platforms on which they can access content on numerous devices as well as at home. As the market and media platforms continue to evolve, it is important that each company in the cinema industry understands how to keep up technological developments and engage with their
To provide an analysis and make recommendations to increase revenue in the movie exhibition industry.
It is highly noticeable that most of the motion pictures fall within the 0 - 20.50 opening weekend gross sales mark which is the lowest of all 6 classes. Only 1 motion picture was able to reach the highest class and garnering between $102.51-123.00 M in gross sales in its opening weekend. This is a huge sign that the motion picture industry is highly competitive and would entail that movies would have to reach a certain standard for it to be highly sought after during its first weekend.
There are many modes of production such as large-scale, exploitation, independent, DIY and small-scale productions. The classical Hollywood “studio system” uses the mode of mass production.1 A studio is a company in business for making films for example Paramount and Warner Bros are studios.1 These studios have a system called “studio systems” in which they operate the filmmaking process.1 In mass production systems, writers, directors, actors and all workers in between are under contracts.1 These studios have ultimate control on what is being made, how the producers are making it, what cast and crew were to take part and how the film was to be distributed.1 Large-scale production studio systems have a large supply of equipment and vast physical space.1 They work on higher budgets and have large audiences.1 On the other hand, independent films fall into the category of low-budget productions.1 Although they operate in similar ways to the mass-production system, they don 't have major distributers financing them.1 This allows directors to have more control over the production process.1 However, independent filmmaking has its advantages and disadvantages. The major advantages of independent filmmaking are that they could be personal and it allows for upcoming filmmakers to flourish and create. The major disadvantages are working with small budgets and the distribution/exhibition of the film. The films Modern Times (1936) by Charlie Chaplin, Daughters of the Dust (1991) by
In 1995, the Federal Communications Commission’s financial interest and syndication rule expired, which had major impact on the film industry. This meant that many of the big Hollywood companies had to merge and create what’s called the megamergers. Because so many of the companies merged, the significance of the independent cinema movement increased since not many small, but great ideas would be able to come to the light. Some artists with unique film vision and ideas would be unable see their ideas in green light from megamergers.
Motion pictures are a key driver of the market for entertainment products, one of the largest export markets in US. Motion picture industry consists of three stages: studio production, distribution, and exhibition. The studios produce the lifeblood of the industry, the films that are its content. The biggest players at this level are the majors, big studios which integrate production and distribution, as do the slightly smaller mini-majors. The next stage is distribution. Distributors are the intermediaries between the studios and exhibitors. Distribution entails all steps following a film’s artistic completion including marketing, logistics, and administration. Distributors coordinate the manufacture and distribution of
Along with this, four more films are set to be released in the coming years, not to mention the vast amounts of products that will roll out into the world once these films are produced.
Although the most popular, the commercial film industry is not the only way to produce and project motion pictures to targeted audiences. Documentaries and avant-garde films have their own guidelines, production values, technological innovations, budgets, and overall viewership that differ greatly from that of fiction-based films. Many avant-garde films are made not only to challenge the existing use of film itself but also to express the personal views or experiences of the screenwriter and/or director. In most cases, fiction-based film focuses on telling the story of a character rather than shedding light on their life and challenging the presentation of the narrative. Commercial film and film documentary differ greatly not only in their
In recent years, the film industry has changed drastically. When I was younger, I thought independent films and documentaries were weird things that only hippies watched. Now, more and more people adore independent films. Although indie movies do not have the budget of blockbuster films, they have a unique chance to explore what lies beyond Hollywood norms. Instead of the same directors and managers deciding what should entertain the masses, regular people can become creators and reach their own targeted audience. For example, one could make a video about the harsh conditions of meat factories and share it on Facebook among vegetarian groups. A movie that narrow in audience would never reach it to the theaters. Also, independent movies explore what makes a movie “good” and defy cutter-cookie plots. One particularly great acclaimed independent movie is The Babadook. This film had a very slow build and an unsettling ending, both of which are not common in most movies.
The movie exhibition industry dates back to the first ever movie theatre1, a commercial space which was created to show projected motion pictures. From then to the present age the movie exhibition industry has been successfully running businesses and the major four big players in this business are Regal entertainments, AMC Cinemas, Cinemark and Carmike Cinemas. The revenues of the these companies have been at a higher rate, but the movie industry is still finding many obstacles as the technology is becoming easily accessible to the common man. This paper will look into the various aspects of the movie industry, its environment and keenly look into their potential threats in the near future and give some strategic solutions for the presumed complications they might face.
As I have been delving quite deeply into the treasure trove of the entertainment world, I have discovered some exciting gems that are sometimes overlooked. Independent films, or indies as the savvy professionals call them, are on the rise in this ever-changing world, and what was once only in the hands of industry professionals, is accessible to the industry outsider, or what one might call the “common person.” These days, all the rage is to create your own indie film and start a crowdfunding project where fans of those involved and/or their work contribute money towards the final project. Unfortunately, so many of these fall by the wayside due to poor planning or waning enthusiasm. Thankfully, there are those within the industry who are persevering

company. The technology used to film and edit programming impacts the operations and distribution of the company’s original content. Within procurement’s 33% share of revenues, technology makes up the largest share as firms in this industry must invest to compete. The linkages here are vertical; without the newest technologies, it takes longer to produce and edit new series to the standard customers expect. If Disney’s technologies fail to deliver visually high-quality content in a timely manner, consumers will watch elsewhere.
Hollywood today spends more money on movies than ever before, with an average budget of $140 million per movie. ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’; the most expensive movie ever made; cost approximately $378.5 million and that was five years ago. This isn’t surprising since history is witness to a rising trend in money spent on movies, however, even after adjusting for inflation, their impact on the industry isn’t as large as their budgets. Over the years, lower cost productions like B-Movies have played a major role in carrying the industry forward by keeping it stable, moving and profitable in times of trouble. B-Movies came to be the need of the hour after The Great Depression and World War II. Money was tight everywhere and Hollywood could not continue making extravagant movies therefore they turned to low budget commercial films. These movies not only have an economical significance in Hollywood, they have made more than one contribution to the industry. These low risk movies provided directors, writers and producers with a wide scope for experimentation and led to the creation of many genres and sub-genres. The origins of B-Movies are humble but over the years that they grew in Hollywood, they became more significant and successful, yet their progress from “Rags to Riches” remains more a behind-the-scenes heroic act than a superhero
Lewis, (2013), stated, “One may be prompted to ask why anyone would go to a theater unless he or she were going to see something that couldn’t be seen at home” (p. 402). He was referring to the idea that the film industry is facing increasing pressure to present a product that is newer, better, and more “cutting edge” than in the years past in order to attract larger audiences. Larger studios may market to their intended audiences through questionnaires and focus groups in order to create a better film preview to entice wider audience, while independent studios may be able to present their movies at film festivals and through the media (Lewis, 2013). Larger studios may distribute or release a movie nationally, or exclusively to gauge public response, while the independent studio may not have such luxury and may have to release the film locally and selectively around the country in the hope of gaining traction through word of mouth to be able to afford a wider release (Lewis,
