In 1995, the Federal Communications Commission’s financial interest and syndication rule expired, which had major impact on the film industry. This meant that many of the big Hollywood companies had to merge and create what’s called the megamergers. Because so many of the companies merged, the significance of the independent cinema movement increased since not many small, but great ideas would be able to come to the light. Some artists with unique film vision and ideas would be unable see their ideas in green light from megamergers. The release of Sex, Lies and Videotape in 1989 was a breakthrough in the independent films movement because it featured unconventional storyline and cast. Not only that, but it also won the best-film prize at
Interest Convergence theorizes that due to racism the interests of both Whites and people of color exist as institutionalized racism. Although, both parties may aim for a similar purpose and interest, people of color will constantly receive the lesser of the deal. The self-interest of whites will continue to hinder the relationship that people of color may truly believe to exist between themselves and whites may only be imaginary.
Outline the main changes the paramount decree effected on the structure of the American film industry and discuss the measures the ex-studios took to remain in control of the film market.
In “Could This Be the Year Movies Stopped Mattering?” by Brian Raftery, Raftery empathizes how present-day individuals are constantly absorbed towards social media and discover other alternatives to satisfy their entertainment needs. This led to the belief that movies are considered less significant. Furthermore, the author provides us with examples for instance, music, considered an unappreciated category of entertainment, yet unexpectedly, it is a resurgence and recurring item in today’s pop culture, and television, cinema’s long-time competitor in the entertainment industry. He also blames the sudden advancement based on the unexpected deaths of talented artists and a surplus of must hear albums from present artists. Meanwhile, in the year
Strategically choosing content that people can identify with or that tells a particularly interesting or horrific true story can do just as well as the big Hollywood productions. Independent films are becoming increasingly more popular and often rival mainstream movies at the box office when they are coupled with decent funding and distribution.1 The Indie Film Movement of the 1990’s is still strong and many artists seek to escape from the control of studio production. This means more content is available than ever before and this means more choices for the exhibitor.
During the 1930’s and 1940’s, the Studio Era, the biggest and most profitable film studios dominated the industry using the Studio System by making it very hard for minor studios and independents to break through their competition. Among the “Big Five” major studios was RKO Pictures. RKO Pictures (RKO) was very much like other major studios: they owned their own on-site studios lots in Los Angeles, had actors under long-term contracts, and were vertically integrated by owning and controlling manufacturing, wholesaling, retailing, distributing and movie theaters, where they could manipulate their film’s bookings in theaters. Not only did their business practices match those of other major studios, their visual style and narratives were very
The end of the studio system can be defined by understanding the involvement of the government and the changes that were forced upon the studios throughout the 1920’s to 1960’s. In Chapter four-The Studio System from John Belton’s American Cinema/American Culture Belton states, “the dismantling of the studio system began just before World War II when the US Department of justice’s Antitrust Division filed suit against the eight major studios accusing them of monopolistic practices in their use of block booking, blind bidding, and run zones and clearances. ”(Belton 82) These practices were very common among the eight major studios thatwere subdivided in two groups known as the five majors and the three minors, and these were: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer,
During the course of this essay it is my intention to discuss the differences between Classical Hollywood and post-Classical Hollywood. Although these terms refer to theoretical movements of which they are not definitive it is my goal to show that they are applicable in a broad way to a cinema tradition that dominated Hollywood production between 1916 and 1960 and which also pervaded Western Mainstream Cinema (Classical Hollywood or Classic Narrative Cinema) and to the movement and changes that came about following this time period (Post-Classical or New Hollywood). I intend to do this by first analysing and defining aspects of Classical Hollywood and having done that,
Motion pictures are a key driver of the market for entertainment products, one of the largest export markets in US. Motion picture industry consists of three stages: studio production, distribution, and exhibition. The studios produce the lifeblood of the industry, the films that are its content. The biggest players at this level are the majors, big studios which integrate production and distribution, as do the slightly smaller mini-majors. The next stage is distribution. Distributors are the intermediaries between the studios and exhibitors. Distribution entails all steps following a film’s artistic completion including marketing, logistics, and administration. Distributors coordinate the manufacture and distribution of
These forces have created crucial problems that affect the movie industry in a large extent which are discussed
Labor union is a group of organized association of workers, often in a trade or profession, formed to protect and further their rights and interests. Hollywood labor unions are considered necessary because even your favorite actor and/or actress could be treated unfairly bt studios. Actors were forced to worked long days with very little pay in the 20th century. Actors were also not allowed to work with other studios until their contract was over, so it was hard for them to advance in their careers. Having a union by their side helped them have a freelance workforce. Hollywood labor unions are also important because of the discrimination against race and sex. Studios will often try to pay less because of the race of an actor or will pay an
What is strategic alliance? The book has it defines as “an association designed to provide benefits for each of its members.” Media companies form alliances for different reasons. Some of these reasons include the following, “providing access to new markets, increasing shareholder value, and reducing risk.”(Albarran 34) There are different types of strategic alliances, with the most common being mergers and acquisitions, joint ownerships, joint ventures, and formal and informal cooperative ventures. (Albarran 34) The expertise of people that work for the respective companies already are now able to work together and helps build new content. Combined expertise also helps open up doors to reach new target audiences and demographics. Many companies form alliances to help share in production and distribution costs. The purpose of this paper is to focus on different mergers within media companies and organizations.
The accusation of eight largest Hollywood companies _ Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Warner Bros., Columbia, United Artists, Paramount, Twentieth Century-Fox, RKO and Universal_ did not directly hurt movie attendance, but it did have a profound effect on film industry profitibility and stability. The studios acussed of of monopolizing film distribution and exhibition through ownership of first-run theaters and of participating in a variety of collusive practices. For the five majors, the government required the divorcement of production and distribution from exhibition. By cutting the link between production and exhibition, the consent decrees made film production a much less stable undertaking. Every film became a risk, for both producer and exhibitor while in the past the risk had been cushioned by the activities of a large company . The idea was that a breakup of the studios would end the control of exhibition and lead to greater competition throughout the film industry. The government efforts didi not end a set of monopolistic practices.
Investing in the right feature film can produce solid returns and that these returns can be substantial over the short, medium and long terms. It is interesting to note that the number of distribution channels for movies in general has increased greatly over the past several years. Cable and PAY-TV systems as well as Video-on-Demand platforms are growing exponentially throughout the world. In recent years new cable channels have been launched to satisfy the increasing interest in independent features. Channels such as the Sundance Channel and the Independent Film Channel are devoted to free spirited independent films and other related features.
Since its inception, Hollywood and the American entertainment industry have had an unprecedented amount of influence over popular culture. America has set the standard in media, and its citizens look to Hollywood not only for entertainment, but also for societal norms. Ideally, the content being produced would place emphasis on developing complex characters from a multitude of backgrounds that diverse audiences can relate to, and include people with different perspectives to contribute to writing, directing, producing, and acting. But the reality is Hollywood has historically revolved around narratives written by and featuring white, straight men. This is not to say that there are not any sources of media that include more diverse
The market for film expanded to a dramatic degree over the last quarter-centuary, thanks in large part to the evolution of commercial television outlets around the world. Motion pictures remain prominent. Marvel is a conglomorate company as it owns several
