Lydia Darragh was a brave Quaker Housewife living on Second Street when the British occupied Philadelphia on September 26th, 1777. Many major wars were taking place, and they were known as the American Revolution when referred to as one. She supported the war effort and was read out of her meetings because of that support. There is no concrete proof of Darragh’s stories, but a family member brought her memorable actions to life. That member was Darragh’s daughter, Ann, who recounted the story years after it played out. Since Ann’s testimonies have some information that does not fit with other accounts, some historians have dismissed it as a fake tale. The British made Darragh move out of her house so that they could use that area. Lydia wanted to stay because she had two children to take care of. She decided to ask Lord Howe for permission to remain where she was. On her way, she met up with a British officer who surprisingly turned out to be a second cousin, Captain Barrington, from Ireland. Due to Barrington, Darragh was allowed to stay in her home while keeping a room available for British officers to hold meetings. Lydia Darragh carried out many courageous actions to support the Americans in the war.

In the history of human services profession there are many events that have taken place. One that really stands out is Jane Addams and the Settlement house movement. Jane Addams had a passion to help others that were in need because she didn’t believe in people suffering. Jane did not judge or where a person came from or who they were she believed in opportunities and that people should be treated equally. In her lifetime she stood up for immigrants, children, elderly, etc. Addams wanted to do change on how people viewed the poor from being worthy and unworthy poor like previously done in the past she believed that poverty was due to problem within in the society (Martin, 2014, p.28-29). “Addams started the first settlement house in the United
The women we now call Native Americans were actually natives of Asia who lived and died twenty thousand years ago. (Cott, Nancy F. No Small Courage: A History of Women in the United States. Oxford: Oxford UP, 2000. Print.) These rugged women roamed the wilderness and survived by hunting and lived like the Stone Age. As time passed on their lives became transformed, by 500 B.C. Native Americans started to practice farming crops, squash, peppers, and flowers( sunflowers), this continued right up until present day. (pg. 4)
Lucielia was literally dying of grief and rage. "It is Mattie's intervention and her ability to place Lucielia's grief in a historical context and to know it as one more instance of "murdered dreams" in a long history of such murders that undergirds her life saving and healing intervention" (Aull, 2) Mattie healed and renewed Lucielia physically and mentally. "Mattie magnificently wrestles Ciel, dying of grief, back to life" (Gottlieb p.1484). Mattie took on the role of a mother when she nursed Lucielia back to health. Mattie treated and nursed Lucielia "as if handling a newborn"(Naylor, 104). Mattie's relationship with Basil teaches her valuable lessons that help her to be a more effective mother figure to Lucielia. Mattie's mistake with Basil is she used him to fill a void. She loved the fact that he was solely dependent on her. "My Bed hasn't been empty since Basil was born" (38). Mattie spoiled Basil to the point he would always have to have his way. He knew his mother would always be there for him. Because of that, he took advantage of her. It was hard for Mattie to watch the turmoil and sadness Lucielia had to encounter in her love life. It was like watching her child suffer. However, Mattie wasn't going to make the same mistake she made with Basil. Mattie let Lucielia take control of her own life. She never told her what to do. She just listened and gave her support her. Lucielia questioned
The Great Depression devastated millions of people nationwide in the 1930’s. Nobody escaped the suffering that went along with the Great Depression; especially women. Women were considered more as house maids than capable human beings. The only job men thought women to be capable of was to raise their children and clean their house as they went off to work and made money. Women and men’s roles varied greatly in the 1930’s. The expectancies for both genders were very different. Rebecca was set in this time period and follows along with how women were treated during this time. The characters in Rebecca are justified in their actions and reactions throughout the book due to the societal norms of the time period.
of the employees. This workforce allowed these owners to pay a low wage since they were young girls who otherwise where not generally employed in society previously. Many of these workers were young women who had little or no hope of getting married or finding a job. Men were heading out west, so young women needed to find work. Many of them came to work to help pay off the family debts, or to save money for education, or save money for a younger siblings education. This brought on a new era for women. Through the Industrial Revolution, girls in Lowell, and furthermore the country, had a changing role in society by speaking on working regulations, women’s rights, and having a paying job.
Many poets and authors of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries used their respective mediums to broach what were then considered to be taboo or radical subjects. The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word ‘radical’ as “supporting complete political or social reform. Departing from tradition; new” (Soanes 740). When using this definition, both Aphra Behn’s work, “The Disappointment” and John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester’s work, “The Imperfect Enjoyment” are easily interpreted as such. Both poems discuss sexuality and gender in new, sometimes shocking ways. Behn’s poem offers astoundingly liberal views on female sexuality, considering the time period. Despite the radical notions and expletives present, Rochester’s pushes the envelope further by exploring the extremely private issue of impotence and male sexual failure, using highly offensive language. In the year “The Disappointment” was written, traditional gender roles were still very important to society and generally adhered to. This means that men were expected not only to be ‘manly’, but to maintain a certain air of dignity and composure at all times, especially in front of women. For this reason, Rochester’s blatant disregard for social conventions in his brutally honest depiction of erectile dysfunction is simultaneously revolutionary and scandalous. To portray a male in a less-than-flattering light undermines the stereotypes society tried so hard to uphold and represents a
There was no single reason why WW1 began, but several factors led to it. Tensions throughout Europe had been growing for many years – nationalism, an arms race, disputes over territories and the division of Europe into two hostile groups were all factors that contributed and helped lead to the beginning of the Great War. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, by Serbian terrorists led to the Austro-Hungarian invasion of Serbia, July 29th 1914. Around this time, Russia mobilized troops to prevent Serbia being crushed. Germany declared war on Russia and, realizing that France would support Russia, declared war on France as well. I don’t see how declaring war on multiple countries at the same time is logical battle strategy. But they thought what they thought. After Germany invaded the neutral country Belgium, Britain declared war on Germany. Japan, seeing the chance to seize German land located in China, also declared war on Germany. Bulgaria and Turkey sided with the Central Powers and soon most countries in Europe had become involved in the Great War.
The brightest moments in a person’s day are usually times when they have made a personal connection. Whether it is a smile from a complete stranger or a kiss from a loved one, these personal connections build relationships that shape the lives of every individual. Relationships vary in type, depth, and complexity, but any which way, they play a prominent role in the lives of The Women of Brewster Place, and the characters in The Road. Friendly, biological, and intimate relationships are extremely critical components of these two stories and help shape the path of each character’s journey.
