As an institution tasked with the protection of the United States and its interest around the world including on, above, and below the sea, it is increasingly more important that the United States Navy (US Navy) continually works to generate and adapt to change in order be prepared for any threat from enemies near and afar.
There are many instances of when the US Navy was required to be innovative or cease to exist. First and foremost, the creation of the Continental Navy on October 13, 1775. The creation of the US Navy’s Depot of Charts and Instruments in 1830, putting a specially trained officer on each ship to navigate using better nautical instruments, books, and charts. Then, the US Naval Academy was formed due to what is known as the Somers Affair in 1842. The famous CSS Virginia and the USS Monitor battle at Hampton Roads was brought about by the introduction of Ironclad ships. From there, many great and world-shattering innovations were either created by or adapted to by the US Navy such as the aircraft carrier, submarines, long range radar, radar guided guns, and nuclear powered warships. All of these show how the US Navy can generate and/or adapt to change.
There are many factors that influence the US Navy’s ability to generate and/or adapt to change. The US Navy has a very formal, rigid, centralized structure.
