The unfortunate World War II (WWII) began On September 1st 1939 and it ended in the year of 1945. Even though this war only lasted six years, it cost more than 60 million lives. Except Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, another great power was the Soviet Union, led by Joseph Stalin. Stalin and Hitler signed a nonaggression pact that stated that they would not fight against each other in the war, and both agreed to divide Poland between them. Not only that but USSR (United Soviet Socialist Republic) would also take over Finland, and Baltic countries such as Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. After signing the pact, Hitler invaded Poland, by using blitzkrieg strategy, or lighting war. This strategy involved fast moving tanks and airplanes bombing …show more content…
Allies, after being trapped by the Germans, retreated to the beaches of Dunkirk, and still fell to cruel Germans. Because France fell so quickly, Great Britain was left alone to fight against the Nazis (National Socialist German Worker’s Party) that was formed in 1933, by Adolf Hitler. Fortunately, Great Britain had a great leader, Winston Churchill, which became a new prime minister. His goal was to never give in under the Nazi’s rule. He strongly wanted to keep Britain as an independent country. Even though Luftwaffe or Germany’s air force, bombed Britain’s airfields and airplane factories as well as one of its biggest and most important cities, London, The British still stood strong, ready to fight back. Great Britain, with such technological advances such as a radar and Engima, was able to hit back the Germans hard. During this continuous battle over Britain, known as The Battle of Britain, many citizens were in great danger due to non-stop bombings, therefore subways and basements became new homes for the Londoners. Finally on May 10, 1941, Hitler drew back all of his attacks. This victory was significant for the allies, because it showed that there is greater than Hitler, and that he could be stooped. Because Britain fought and did not give up, Hitler had to change his strategy. Instead of focusing on Britain, he wanted to take over Mediterranean and the Balkans, and lastly the Soviet Union. Mussolini, the Dictator of Italy took over North Africa
World War II-- also known as The Holocaust / The Genocide -- was the world 's second 'Great War '. World War II was much more larger in scale and more longer in duration. World War I had only lasted for four years, while World War II had lasted for six years. I find it quite interesting that contrary to popular belief; the United States did not enter World War II until 2 years after the genesis of the conflict. It was only in 1941, when the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor that the United States had entered the war. World War II started in 1939 due to Germany performing an unprovoked attack on Poland. Surprisingly, only a few months later after Germany invaded Poland; the whole European continent was at war. In 1939, the United States was not ready to go to war. In the early 20th century, the United States Army only ranked 39th in the world. Many Americans believed that the United States could not handle another global conflict right after the Great Depression. Although the United States was not 'officially ' part of the war at that time, that did not stop the United States from becoming 'unofficially ' involved.
World War II was one of the deadliest military conflicts in history. There were many different battles that took place within this war; some more important than others. World War II began once Germany’s new dictator, Adolf Hitler, decided that he wanted to gain power for Germany and for himself. One of Hitler’s first moves in power was invading Poland on September 1, 1939. Many other countries became involved in this war because of the alliance system. The two sides during this war were the Allies and Axis powers. German, Italy and Japan were on the Axis powers; France, Britain, and the United States were on the Allies. Germany first began with the Blitzkrieg tactic meaning “lightning war”. This tactic is based on speed, surprise and was
World War II was the most unhaumane event in time of American history or even world history. Hitler was in charge of the mass destruction in Europe. His plan was callled the final solution, him and his right hand man Himmler a had created. The plan was to kill everyone who wasnt an undesirable such as jews. The Arain race was the perfect form of people that Hitler wanted to create and only have, this racd consisted of blue eyes, blonde hair, muscualr/fit, and tall. In 1933 Hitler became the chancellor of Germany and making new rules called Numberberg laws. He startd invading pars of Europe and making them a piece to add to Germany. He became allies with Italy and Japan during the invading to help to control all of Europe this group was
After World War I legacy the Great Depression brought isolationism. The best work produced by President Roosevelt was the Four Freedoms; freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. President Roosevelt was the leader of the Allies, he used this statement as part of his Allies aim. The Soviet Union joined the Allies after being invaded by Germany. Millions of art were sold and reprinted as it publicizes the Four Freedom in 1943. In 1940s after tension between the United States and Japan over East Asia, on December 7, 1941 Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. There was no warning of this attack happening as a result United States declared war on Japan. The Good neighbors policy was, brought into place by President Roosevelt and Hoover in 1930s. This was a policy that would help the relationship between Latin American countries and the Unites States. The good neighbors policy would not only help the Latin countries but also the United States with trade and military.
World War II happened during the time that women wanted more rights and wanted to be able to work. So when World War II happened, it created new job opportunities and women were able and willing to work. The war was fought between two alliances that was against each other, “the opposing alliances are now referred to as ‘The Axis’ and ‘The Allies’. The Axis group consisted of Germany, Italy, and Japan. The Allies group consisted of France, Britain, the U.S., the Soviet Union, and China. World War II was especially heinous because of the genocide of Jewish people perpetrated by the Nazis.” (Diffen LLC, n.d.d). World War II is known for being a brutal and long war that involved more than thirty countries. Also, some of the important things of
World War II was a period in history which contained a motley of quarrels and conflicts. General Dwight David “Ike” Eisenhower played a significant role in the theatre of World War II. In the conflict, General Eisenhower served not only as a 5 star general in the the United States Army, but also served as the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe. As a _____ leader, General Eisenhower coined the historical term “military-industrial complex”, and also led several pivotal conflicts(??) throughout the course of the war, some of which include the invasion of North Africa in Operation Torch (1942-1943) and the invasion of France and Germany from the Western Front in Operation Overlord (AKA D-Day).
Helga Arthur was born January 16,1943 right in the middle of the second World War II in Berlin Germany. When I was interviewing Helga she discussed how her parents were originally from Estonia and had lost everything which lead them to fled to Germany. But then Germany became unsafe when her father hear the communist were moving in and that there was the potential for Germany to be divided between the U.S , Britain and Russian. So Helga’s father got them forged german red cross papers and they escaped in the middle of the night through farm lands and keep going in the directions of where the Americans were. There was a tremendous amount of hunger along the way and the farmers that didn 't really want to help the people escaping the city because they did not want to get in trouble but Helga informed me that they could not say no to a hunger child so her parents and her got sheltering along their journey. After a perilous trip they mange to get themselves to Hesse Germany where there was a big American base. Helga mentioned at this time that her parents were both university educated and spoke multiple languages which was very good because her father ended up going to work for the American army and they hired him because he spoke English, Russian, Estonian, German, and a little bit of French which allowed him to support his family. The American soldiers were also extremely good to Helga’s family in terms of her father was able to bring home extra food at night which
World War 2 was one of the greatest milestones in 20th-century history, involving more than 70 countries around the world. The war began in Europe on September 3rd, 1939, when the British and French prime ministers, Neville Chamberlain and Edouard Daladier declared war on Germany. The main Allied powers were Great Britain, The United States, and the Soviet Union, who had the goal of defeating the Axis powers, whose leaders were Germany, Japan, and Italy. The war was initiated by Adolf Hitler's invasion of Poland in 1939, and the war continued for years until the Allies defeated both Nazi Germany and Japan in 1945. The war was in many regards a continuation of the unresolved disputes from World War 1.
In 1939, WWII began when Adolf Hitler, supreme commander of the German army, invaded Poland. Knowing that Hitler was a power hungry madman, and that nothing short of war would stop him from conquering Europe, the British and French declared war on Germany. The Soviet Union, who were trying to find their place in the world at the time of WWII, sided with the Germans. Soon, Hitler’s greed and relentless massacring of Jews broke the alliance between the Nazis and Soviets. Though the alliance was broken, the Soviets began to independently fight the Germans, and did not officially ally with the British and French. (“Start of WWII”) It was not until the Soviets began to suffer immense losses that they asked the British for help. The Soviets and British and French were now the only fighting forces against Hitler. (“Origins of the Normandy Landing”)
Most people think D-Day is a day that we freed France. This is true , however, there is much more to it. Many soldiers deceased, and people lost loved ones. One of the bloodiest battles in World War II was on June 6, 1944 on Omaha , Juno, Gold, Sword, and Utah beaches to free France from the Nazis ' and make them surrender.(D-Day by Martha Brack Martin) People have been told that the cause of the war was because Hitler believed in the perfect race. This may be true, but others have different reasons. Dwight D. Eisenhower entered the war to help plan for D-Day and lead them into the war. He was responsible for the whole thing. Franklin Roosevelt may have helped and same with Winston Churchill.
Going through the different levels of the educational system most everyone has talked about the Second World War in great detail. The European and Pacific Theaters were the main focus of many historians and their writing, because war pertained to the audience of the time. WWII revolved around the idea of freedom and liberating the fascist governments of Europe, the homefront back in the states was the war machine that kept the war churning. Millions of pages have been written about the experiences and battles during WWII, and still continue, not much in the way of the American homefront history has been written.
World War II was one of the most powerful wars the world has ever had. It was also one of the largest conflicts there has ever been. It was known as a “world war” because nearly every country in the world was involved. There were many tragic and chilling events throughout the war that were very significant. The war was known as one of the most disastrous wars of all time because of what the nations put each other through. Many innocent lives were taken during this mournful war. About 50 million troops lost their lives fighting in the war. In Nazi Germany nearly 9,000,000 troops were killed. 42,000,000 troops were killed in the Soviet Union. 4,000,000 were killed in China and 3,000,000 were killed in Japan. Although nearly every country was
In the early parts of the twentieth century the world was turned upside down in the wakes of the deadliest war it had ever seen in 1914. For the first time, science was playing a large part in the makings of the war, with the invention poison gasses being thrown into the war field. And then, to make matters worse, in 1939, Germany invaded Poland to spark the second of the World Wars. Germany was on a seemingly unstoppable track to take over Europe, and countries such as France and England were always being caught in the middle of the violence by trying to help their allies involved. Because of these wars, the moral of England was something that many authors had the ability to represent and express through their writings. Even the post war
On July 3rd, 1940 the Operation Catapult was put into action and this made the British naval force based in Gibraltar to be ordered to Mers-el-Kebir in Algeria. This was a place where the remaining French navy had fled. The British asked the French to join them in the fight against Germany but they refused and this made the British to destroy the French ships and killing
The end of World War II was not just the end of a war, but also the beginning of a tense and dynamic period that affected society on all levels. This “postwar” period, as it became known, shaped the world, as we know it today; likewise, the period was shaped itself both by the war that had preceded it, and the powerful forces that surrounded it. As the energy of fundamentally different ideologies, Communism and Democracy collided with advances in science such as the nuclear bomb, a dangerous environment ensued that created an atmosphere of paranoia throughout the world and especially, within America.
