Hardly a day goes by where a murder doesn’t occur. Usually, it is in a big city, such as Chicago, but sometimes it happens in a small town, maybe even not far from you. As we see a small town called New Baltimore located just outside of Detroit, not much seemed to happen in this small town...until someone murdered Justin Mello. This event leads to a shattered town with a reminder to us all, life is just a vapor, we can never be promised another day. Justin Mello seemed to be doing everything right, but his life was cut short by a single bullet. This bullet affected his family, a business, a school, a team, and the town in a devastating way.
On January 31, 2013, while walking to the courthouse in Kaufman County, Texas, Mark Hasse was shot and killed. Two months later, on the Saturday before Easter 2013, Mike and Cynthia McLelland were murdered in their home. Medical examiners testified that Mike and Cynthia were each shot numerous times (“Eric Williams Murder Trial Begins in Rockwall”). Prosecutors said the couple died in a “torrent of lead” (“Eric Williams Found Guilty in Kaufman Co. Murder Trial”).
One late night, in 1993 in Missouri, Christopher Simmons; a 17 year old boy along with two of his friends robbed a woman by the name of Mrs.Shirley Crook. They broke into her home and the noise startled her making her get up to see who was in the house. Simmons, who has recently been involved in an accident with her recognized her face. Simmons became upset and scared. The three young men left, but came back later to murder her. The three men tied her up, took Crook to a bridge and threw her off it. They went on to tell people about it; boasting about the crime they had just committed. Christopher Simmons had the idea for his friends to come along because they thought
Ghettoside is a true story of murder in America and shows statistics that will amaze and bewilder its readers. The book was written by Jill Leovy and is written to show people how many murders happen in Los Angeles that don’t get reported to the community or the nation. Leovy gives shocking statements like, “In 2007 for every one white woman murdered in Los Angeles, one hundred black men are murdered in the same place”. Not only is this statistic shocking, it makes you wonder how this is possible.
On March 13th, 1964, in New York, a young woman by the name of Catherine “Kitty” Genovese was just coming home from her late shift at work. It’s three a.m., and as she’s walking to her apartment building, she notices a suspicious, hooded man some distance away. Rightfully concerned, she goes to the phone booth, aiming to call the police, but never makes it in time. She’s stabbed in the back, and then in her gut. When her screams cause the neighbors to turn the lights on, all they do
Northbury, Maine. The textbook small town; quiet, everybody knows everybody and news travels fast. Sticking with the stereotype, Northbury was seemingly perfect. To date, there has only ever been one tragic event to shock their town. Even more shocking, the case went cold. Four years later, it’s just a story. The woman’s name comes up in conversation, only for people to shake their heads and say “Oh, it’s just so sad.” Few people know that Northbury did their best to sweep that event under the rug.
While this story if full of darkness and sadness, Detroit is not seen as quite as dark at first. Often, Detroit is seen as a main negative aspect in stories. Even in today’s media, Detroit is still portrayed as dirty, crime ridden, and a horrible place to live. However in this memoir, Detroit is seen as a regular suburban area where David grows up until
A serial rapist brutally murdered inside California's highest-security prison for women. A frantic gun battle in the middle of downtown Los Angeles. A beautiful, young defense attorney violently abducted from her office.
Murders, stealing and hommoside everyday twenty four hours a day. A world without broadcasting and recording, just freedom... People were getting hurt everyday by one fugitive, Chris Lowes. I saw him at the park, with a knife one night wondering what he was up to I carefully followed behind him. "Come here!" Chris yelled to a young man. I could see the shadow of the knife going closer and closer to the mans body... Suddenly about a litre of blood spilt onto the footpath, I ran away not even looking back pretending I never saw anything. That was the last murder because of that murder broadcasting was implemented...
Lincoln Nebraska seemed like the perfect place to live. It was a quiet town where everybody seemed to know each other, and nobody needed to lock their doors at night. It wasn’t until December 1, under the cover of darkness, that everything seemed to change. On that night Charles Starkweather returned to a Lincoln gas station, robbed the attendant for $100.00, and then led him out a few miles where he proceeded to shoot him dead. (Spencer). This robbery and murder was just the start of the gruesome spree that had yet to occur.
Does the sound of the city ring a bell as a place filled with violence and gruesome stories? That’s what I have always noticed with the reports involving the city of Oakland. To news media everything has to have just the right amount of darkness to it in order for that news channel to have a good amount of viewers. Like it or not we all have that little dark side within us that is more curious and interested to see something terrible happen in news reports; because for some reason it’s entertaining to us. During my critical thinking class with my professor Larry Salomon, I learned that this is why most news channels like to show gruesome and tragic stories more often, because we as human beings find some sort of interest and satisfaction hearing about these stories; and this makes work for news channels more easier to gain more viewers. Some people are more eager to learn about a tragic story unlike the other reports that have a more hopeful and cheerful description. How is this linked to violence in Oakland? News reporters know that Oakland is the place to go when you need a story that will help you get viewers. I have talked to some residents in my community of Oakland and they stated that they were tired of being the notebook of bad stories to be told on live television; the only reason why violence seems to continue in this community is because reporters always point the finger at the city as being a place filled with
Although I live in Lodi now, my earliest, most important development occurred on the broken streets of Paterson, New Jersey. When my mother became pregnant with me, she vowed to move out of Paterson before I was born. The streets bled constant crime and violently sucked out the last drops of innocence that it encountered. Every other day, a mother or brother or friend wailed with hurt and hopelessness after losing a loved one to Paterson’s gun violence.
Too many people have been murdered in Miami, and the number of people who have gotten killed has increased during the passing of the years. City-Data.com rated that Miami had a total of "65 murders for every 100000 resident in the year 2002." For every year the murders in Miami have increased drastically, and the murder rates for 2014 went up from "65 to 81 murders for every 100000 resident." Most of this murders were caused by guns, and the worst part was all the small innocent children that had gotten gunned down in Miami-Dade County because of the accessibility of guns, the brutality of gangs, and the irresponsibility of parents.
In J.J. Anselmi “I heard the shot that killed my neighbor, but I refuse to be afraid” brings to the light that violence can happen anywhere, and that there are many signs of racism still in our world. He shares his experience with having his ethnic neighbor murdered, and participating in interviews with news people who only cared about is opinion based on his own racial class. In his article he also explains his experience with violence in different cities, as well as how living in these different towns has made him realize many other views on what many may consider a safe living or safe neighborhoods. All of this opening his eyes and realizing how some people who spastically live in these safe

On this day, the busy, large city we were heading to was located right off of Illinois in the peaceful suburbs. In order to get there you would have to go through Chicago and then past the small town of East St. Louis. This place is known for its murderous and exquisite history. One man once attempted to kill his ex-wife by having an undercover officer do the job. He wasn't even a real officer. He was later caught. Another man also had a suicidal murdering cat. The plan was to get the other man and his cat in a tub together only to drop a radio into it and send thousands of volts of electricity. Despite its crazy murders, there were also terrible things that happened in this town so, you could say my sister and I were a bit petrified.
