Over the course of this semester, I have learned about the theoretical foundation of leadership and management. From various leadership styles to numerous learning tools have all aided in shaping me to become an effective leader not only in the health care profession, but everyday life as well. Through utilizing these tools, I have managed to put them into actions through working individually and in teams which has helped me to learn more about myself and the type of leader I am. Throughout this action plan I will reflect on my definition of leadership, what I’ve learned about myself in the capacity to demonstrate leadership, my leadership strengths and weaknesses and three action steps that will help me to develop my leadership in the future. In the beginning of class, my definition of leadership was “someone who helps guide an organization,” since than it has changed several times. From someone who helps guide to someone who helps to inspire an organization to reach optimal success. I realized that my definition of a leader was too short and vague and opted to change it again. I started to define it by saying, “someone who knows their leadership style, who inspires others through the process.” Whereas this definition was saying leaders have different styles which is true, but a leader should be flexible in nature in which I learned through the difference between a leader and a manager. Many other definitions exist, suggesting that it is a concept as fluid and individual as leaders themselves (Curtis et al. 2011).
Leadership comes in many different forms, and is a curtail element of a health care organization. This paper will describe leadership styles, management theories, and my style of leadership in reference to the self-assessment completed. I will discuss what leadership styles align with my style and what type of work environment and behaviors that will help me be a successful leader. I will also discuss different types of leadership theories. There are many aspects to being a leader and every good organization has good leaders behind it. Leadership is a key element in nursing due to the fact that nurses are often working in teams (Huber, 2014, p.3).
Performing an internet search for a definition of leadership pulls up a plethora of results, each definition slightly different from the last. The readings from the Leadership: Theory and Practice book also draw attention to the multitude of descriptions of leadership as well as the strengths, weaknesses and practical implications for several different leadership approaches. Specifically, trait, skills, style and situational. This paper will outline the implications of each of these models for my leadership profile and will also outline some insights that I have gained at the physician leadership level with my organization for each approach.
The privilege of working with highly influential individuals, and having the opportunity to be continually challenged, are boons to one’s career; consequently, success accompanies failure, and growth as a leader begins. Positive behaviors are reinforced by prompt open recognition, while adverse behaviors are addressed privately and are a cause for self-reflection. Learning from these incidents has shaped the leader I’ve become. Leadership as a definition continually evolves in my world. Notwithstanding, there are elements that remain permanently anchored in this definition, such as respect, purpose, collaboration, heart, trust, and spirit. Carefully managing team synergy, harmonizing their dynamics, and maximizing the advantages of their diversity in order to achieve collective success signifies leadership.
Strong and effective leadership is one of the most significant factors in determining the success and durability of an organization or group (Huber, 2014). A health care professional that is able to identify their own style of leadership can develop their unique characteristics and skills and become a better leader, as well as develop and improve relationships with other leaders and colleagues (Giltinane, 2013). In this paper, I will discuss my style of leadership based on the completed self-assessment and describe what leadership and management theories align with my leadership style. I will also discuss the type of work environment and three key actions or behaviors that I must demonstrate to be a successful leader.
Leadership is defined as the process of visualising to a better future; whereby one motivates and enticing others to think and plan ahead as to facilitate the change (Jones, 2007). However, according to Bishop (2009), healthcare professionals have a poor leadership skills due to lack of strong leaders, who mainly emphasise more on traditional models of management. Therefore, they require leaders who have a good communication and decision-making skills to be able to handle stress and time management efficiently (Tomey, 2009). Thus, the fundamental concepts of leadership are important, as to help leaders to look at the different surroundings of situations and to be able to adjust their leadership style accordingly (Tomey, 2009).

The book selected for the assignment is, ‘Be a people person: Effective leadership through effective relationships,’ by John C. Maxwell. Mr. Maxwell is an author, speaker, leadership expert who is internationally recognized and a pastor. He wrote books on leadership (The John Maxwell Company, n.d.). He has a doctorate in ministry and started his career as a pastor. After 14 years of preaching the word of God, he devoted himself to speaking and writing. He became a religious leader (Christian Books Previews, n.d.). Maxwell has recognized the role of interpersonal relationships in making and breaking a leader. He has also realized the importance of developing personal skills from the people (Victor Books, 2002). In his book, Maxwell explains how a person who follows can turn to a leader by connecting with people and relating to them from a biblical perspective. The author places 50 percent emphasis on others, 25 percent on self and the remaining 25 percent on God in his approach to the followers (Barnes and Noble, n.d.).
Leadership is defined in many different ways by many different academics and professionals. A few words that resonate with the meaning include management, control, guidance, headship, direction and governance. My basic definition for the word describes it as a technique used to manage and guide individuals or groups of individuals in a specific direction to achieve a common goal. However this is a bit too basic for my liking. While conducting the research for this manifesto I found two definitions that I thought were more interesting and quite charming. Tom Landry defines leadership as “getting someone to do what they don’t want to do, to achieve what they want to achieve” (Murphy, 2010). Alternatively Otto Scharmer stated, “at its core, leadership is about shaping and shifting how individuals and groups attend and subsequently respond to a situation” (Scharmer, 2007).
Before taking the leadership class I viewed leaders and managers the same and I was thinking that only a few people at the top of an organization can lead. However I was wrong and today I view leadership as the challenge and responsibility of every individual with potential to make a difference. Today, I view leadership as a social influence. It is initiating and guiding and the result is change. Leadership is more art than science and more skill than knowledge (Manning, p.61).
For a quick review, the definition of leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group or individuals, to achieve a common goal.
Chapter sixteen discusses various leadership theories which can implemented by leaders to achieve success. The choice of leadership theory differs from leader to leader as they possess different vision and way of managing. A theory isn 't always perfect in itself, it is the endless effort of the leaders which makes the theory a perfect one. Two approaches of leadership that I prefer are Situational Leadership Theory and Servant Leadership Theory. Among many theories I prefer these two because I tend to practice those principles most of the time and I assume these are theories that I truly tend to continue in a long run.
The above outlines the history of the theory and the basic concepts behind the leadership framework. But what are the building blocks of the authoritarian leadership model? Here’s a look at the key characteristics, as well as an explanation of the different elements that make the model work.
According to Bobby Clinton, leadership emergence theory can be stated in these terms: God develops a leader over a lifetime, and effective leaders will understand their ministry in terms of a lifetime perspective. Ultimately, processing items in critical life events such as ministry conflict provide opportunities to bring closure to recent experiences, to deepen ones relationship to God, to expand one 's perspectives to see new things, and to make decisions which will launch one into a new phase of development (Clinton 1992, 16). How we react in that crisis, our response patterns, determines the type of leaders we will become. Therefore leaders need to be prepared so they can evaluate process items with perspective and develop maturity to learn the lessons God intends.
