Bullying uses someone putting others down in order to emotional better themselves because they feel better about themselves causing pain and distress to someone else. This can be traced back to the novel as Andy feels better about his unfortunate predicament the more he hurts others. This hurting people to heal yourself is what the main theme of this novel stems from in a philosophical viewpoint. The many brushes with philosophy in the novel harmonize with the underlying theme of deception and using others to heal oneself. “It has been raining for seven years; thousands upon thousands of days compounded and filled from one end to the other with rain, with the drum and gush of water, with the sweet crystal fall of showers and the concussion of storms so heavy they were tidal waves come over the islands.” (Bradbury, 1954) In the dystopian story, “All Summer In A Day” by Ray Bradbury, it takes place on the planet, Venus. A group of children, along with scientists get to live there, while being educated at the underground school. Margot, who is only 9 years old, wasn't born on Venus like the other children, but instead on Earth. She’s the only one who remembers how the sun felt through her skin and how beautiful it shined. On the contrary, the other children are jealous of her because she has some memory of the sun, while they don’t. Jealousy caused the children to harass, isolate, and make her depressed.
Did you know that in the short story “all summer in a day” the theme is th not to bully people. People should not be bullied because of what they look like. One piece of artwork that shows you this is pointing fingers. Both the artwork and story shows kids should not be bullied and it’s hurtful when people do bully you.
Kids can be cruel when they are envious as shown in the short story, “All Summer In A Day,” by Ray Bradbury. The sun is what makes Margot happy, and when that gets taken away from her. In this short story there is several acts of cruelty to Margot by her classmates. These kids live in the planet of Venus, and they haven’t seen the sun in seven years, except for Margot. The kids are only nine years old so they haven’t seen the sun since they were two years old, but Margot moved there from Earth when she was four and she remembers the sun and that makes the other kids envious. In the beginning of the story it is the day that the sun is supposed to come out for the first time in seven years! The kids were skeptical except for Margot because she wanted to see it so bad. The kids were starting to prepare for the sun to come out but they were sitting inside waiting. While they were waiting the kids decided to lock Margot in a closet and not let her out. When the sun came out all the kids ran outside to play in the sun that felt so warm and nice on their skin, except for Margot, who was sitting inside in the dark closet. When the kids came back inside they felt sorry for leaving Margot in there. Envy can lead people to commit awful acts and cause shame as demonstrated throughout the character's actions in, “All Summer In A Day.”
Treat others the way you want to be treated. Have you ever had this problem? People are mean to others all the time and just hurt their feelings. Have they ever thought, What if they said this to me? In the story, “All Summer In A Day,” and the piece of art titled “Pointing Fingers,” the theme “Treat others the way you want to be treated,” is used.
In Ray Bradbury’s short story, All Summer in a Day, the author conveys the message that when people in society are jealous of others, it can lead to cruel treatment and sometimes can end up hurting others. For instance, Margot is mostly isolated from the other children as they pay no attention towards her and frequently shun her, like when, “Now she stood, separate, staring at the rain and the loud wet world beyond the huge glass.” The other children consider her different than them because of where she was from and deliberately choose to ignore her, just like how in society, people treat others differently because of where they’re from and how they think. Her knowledge of what the sun looks like, instills jealousy in her classmate’s, resulting
Treat others as you would want to be treated. It’s true, if you want to be treated with respect then you need to treat others with respect. Margot was the main character in the story and she was picked on by a boy named William. At the end of the story Margot was not able to see the sun because William locked her in a closet. If William had treated Margot with respect and had treated her the way he would want to be treated, than Margot would have seen the sun and William would not be the reason for Margot not getting to see the sun. From this, it can be concluded that a superior theme for this story would treating others as you would like to be treated.
All Summer in A Day by Ray Bradbury is about how a little jealousy can turn into rage and reveals that children, along with adults, can be blinded by something so simple. The author of All Summer in A Day believes jealousy and bullying are the key emotions played in this short story. Bradbury claims that the main characters, Margot, is being bullied because she was Earth longer. Whereas, the other students don’t even remember Earth because of how early they all moved to Venus. When Margot arrives, she was four. The other children had arrived two years before. The author describes her as “a very frail girl who looked as if she had been lost in the rain for years and the rain washed out the blue from her eyes and the red from her mouth and the
The short story All Summer in A Day, by Ray Bradbury is about the power of jealousy and demonstrates if jealousy is not controlled, it will lead to regretful actions upon yourself. Jealousy is a key topic in the story, and in my opinion, is the main topic of the story. Although, there are other key topics in the story. All Summer in A Day is about a group of kids, who all their lives have been living in a world, Venus, with no sun and the constant sound of rain. Then there is Margot. Margot knows what it is like to have the sun shining down on her skin, she knows what it is like to feel the warm embrace of the sky. For the first time in seven years the sun is going to come out and everybody is extremely anxious and excited. The other kids are
It is commonly said that “The nail that sticks out, gets hammered down” and this quote is definetly shown in “All Summer in a Day”. “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury is about a futuristic civilization on the planet Venus, where a constant rain storm lurks over the children that live there. 9 year old Margot had set foot on Venus 5 years ago after living her previous year in Ohio with her parents and remembering the clear sky with the bright warm sun. She is different than the rest as all the others had lived their whole lives on Venus where the last time they saw the sun was 7 years ago, a sight much forgotten. Margot has troubles coping with the environment on Venus and the others make it worse as they constantly harass her as she is different. On this one day in 7 years, Scientists had predicted the sun would come out. Today was a day for Margot to experience something she had been waiting for, but it does not happen as the children lock her in a closet and she misses the event and is devastated. Themes constantly run through the story and Bradbury develops the theme using events and literary devices. People isolate and harass those who are different, experienced, and knowledgeable, as they become jealous and ignorant. This is shown when the children repeatedly deny Margot’s experiences and invoke acts of violence to demonize her because they are jealous of her experiences.
Central Idea: Bullying has been around for years, but it’s time to make a difference and get rid of it.
