Liquor became a very popular substance in this time period and people began to see that drunkenness from over drinking was tearing families apart. One or two drinks is good but once a person reaches 3 to 4 it is hard to stop continuing. Drinking in moderation was not the problem, it was an overdose of alcohol and recklessness of the individual that caused the problem.

This illustrates that he is psychologically and physically unable to deal with reality so he uses ‘whisky’ to escape the traumatic events occurring around him. This illustrates to the audience that his only way of escaping the war is to mentally remove himself from the situation. Another interpretation could be that he doesn’t want to accept that his mind is failing, so the only way of concealing the problem is for other people to think he is an alcoholic. From the word “usual” it gives the impression that his drinking habit is frequent and those around him have noticed. On the other hand, it could portray to the audience that the alcohol is in control of him and he no longer has the self-control to stop “drinking” this also introduces the theme of alcoholism that develops throughout the play.

In Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” one of the main details involved in the plot is alcoholism. Fortunato thoroughly enjoys good wine and drank a lot. Not only did he drink often, but he also was extremely knowledgeable about “fine wines” as Poe writes. Fortunato liked to think of himself as a judge of whether a wine was good or not. Based on all this, Montresor decided to tap into this weakness of Fortunato’s to seek his revenge after Fortunato mocked Montresor’s family name. Montresor then caused Fortunato to become drunk. In this and other stories, alcoholism and drug usage are very prevalent in Poe’s writing, but the references always seem to reflect his own life addictions and show us how truly depressed he was.
