Being an animal hunter has some big responsibilities, but rainsford was not +worried or so he thought. After days and weeks of hunting for animals, he decided that he wanted to be a serial killer. As we all know, serial killers end up in prison for a long time. Obviously, Rainsford was not worried about the consequences. Whittney tried convincing Rainsford that it was not a good idea to start killing people, so Rainsford acted like he took Whitney’s advise. Therefore, while rainsford was trying to change his ways, he had to overcome his fears of
Rainsford will hunt again because hunting is all he has ever done, so he will never stop. Hunting is Rainsford’s career, and he writes books about his experiences to tell people what happens on the hunts like his “book on hunting snow leopards in Tibet”(Connell 23). Rainsford is passionate about hunting, he calls it the “[b]est sport in the world”(Connell 19). Rainsford tells Whitney “you're a big game hunter, not a philosopher” (Connell 19). Rainsford is a hunter, and he doesn't understand opinions against hunting. Rainsford tells Whitney that they “ should have some good hunting up in the amazon” (Connell 19). Rainsford enjoys hunting and he looks forward to more hunting trips, for example, the amazon.
Rainsford values human life, because when the general told Rainford that he hunts humans. Rainsford told the General that what he is doing is not hunting, what he spoke of was murder. He also is very caring. He said that he will not make him into a condone cold blooded murderer. Rainsford is also described as a mouse in the hunting game, “He didn't even have to wait long, the cat was coming to play with the mouse.
In the action packed short story, The Most Dangerous Game, Richard Connell writes about a lost hunter’s journey. But, through his use of analogies and irony, Connell is able to convey some messages with much deeper meanings. There are two main characters in the short story, Rainsford, the sailor and hunter whose yacht was shipwrecked, and General Zaroff, who owned his own island that he used for “The Hunt”. Throughout the text, Connell uses analogies to justify the General’s morals.
In the misception that Rainsford would be safe at the cottage, the general and Rainsford share meals together. Rainsford learns that they both share the passion for hunting, except the general’s hunting was on a whole other level. Like any other person, Rainsford would think the general liked to hunt big games such as lions and deers, but the big game for the general was humans. There is not an animal that can reason, according to Rainsford, but then the general implies that there is one, and the horror hits Rainsford in the face. Rainsford tells the bitter truth to the general, “‘Hunting? General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder’” (Connell 34). Rainsford seemed to be shocked and amazed at the fact that the general enjoyed hunting and killing innocent human beings. He also seemed to be amazed about the fact that the general was not yet in jail or not yet caught for his crimes. It seems justifying that Rainsford killed a murderer, before the general tried to hunt anymore people. Even if the general was caught by the police, he would have been executed for the many people he murdered; either he would have died. Rainsford’s activities toward the general, in a sense, is karma and self-defense. The general got punished for what he did wrong. It is seen as self-defense because Rainsford was forced to play the game. In order to put a stop to the general’s absurd hobbies and to save his
In Richard Connell’s short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”, there is a hunter named Rainsford in the story. Rainsford travels on a ship toward the Amazon. Then, in a tragic event that brought upon an external conflict, he fell overboard into the ocean. Rainsford later woke-up to find himself on Ship Trap Island. When he got up from the island shoreline, he wandered around the jungle, looking for people.
Coupled with the last paragraph, Rainsford will have to hunt and use his skills to protect himself. Rainsford has many things to protect himself from. For example, animals, his surroundings, and other humans. Humans are the most dangerous for the reason that “‘they can reason, after a fashion so they are dangerous’” (Connell 27).
He cares and doesn't want any lifes to be taken by this gruesome game, including his own. Right before the two hunters partake in the “game”, Rainsford attempts to close with, “Thank you, I’m a hunter, Not a murderer” (Connell, 4). This is stating that he doesn't want to turn into what General Zaroff has become, a murderer. He only takes pleasure in hunting animals, and he directly states this.
“Rainsford heard a sound. It came out of the darkness, a high screaming sound, the sound of an animal in an extremity of anguish and terror” (16). In the shocking short story “The Most Dangerous Game” created by Richard Connell, tension and terror is manufactured in the eyes of the reader. In the chilling story of a hunter and a huntee, the author subjects the audience to Rainsford’s grief and agony of the hunt. Combining suspenseful foreshadowing and vivid imagery, the writer produces apprehension and fashions shock in the eyes of the reader.
In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, the author, Richard Connell, develops two radically different hunters who share a love for the sport, but it is the protagonist, Rainsford, who makes the story interesting because he is a dynamic character who, by the resolution, remarkably changes the story. Unlike Zaroff, who is an immoral character that thinks the idea of hunting humans is alright, Rainsford’s ideal changes keep the reader interested because they are key to making the story much more fascinating, especially by his bravery, never-give-up attitude, and wise decisions. When Rainsford ends up on “Ship-Trap Island” by falling off a yacht, he starts to get to know Zaroff, and he learns that he is not just a typical hunter. Zaroff has become a serial killer. He soon realizes that he has no choice but to play the game with Zaroff.
CM: In Rainsford’s case, life to him revolves around the idea of death and sport; death symbolizes the fact that all living organisms will perish, and the sport of hunting symbolizes one’s entertainment before death. The sport of killing makes Rainsford elated, but the sport of being hunted puts fear into his eyes. CD: However, Rainsford does not reason that he himself is an animal, so when put in the situation of being the prey death means much more,“It sent a shudder of cold horror through his whole being... Then it was that Rainsford knew the full meaning of terror” (Connell 15). CM: He was clearly in a state of distress and danger, for
In the suspense novella “The Most Dangerous Game,” Richard Connell uses conflicts to bring the reader into the story, almost like the reader is in the same situation. Sanger Rainsford, the protagonist, is a famous big game hunter going to the Amazon to hunt Jaguars. On his way, he falls off his yacht and washes up on a mysterious island. He discovers the evil General Zaroff, who hunts humans. When Rainsford refuses to play the game with General Zaroff, he is threatened and forced to play as prey.
He went through a traumatizing thing but he still stayed strong. He never quit. He persevered and stayed strong. He found a way to calm himself down. He calms himself down by promising to never touch a gun again. And when he found out he killed his brother he showed determination by promising not to touch a gun. And he also showed enthusiasm, because he really felt like that decision to not touch a gun was the right thing. So he had passion for what he was doing. He supported himself and that is how he got through his adversity. In “The Most Dangerous Game” it states that, “Rainsford knew he could do one of two things. He could stay where he was and wait. That was suicide. He could flee. That was postponing the inevitable. For a moment he stood there, thinking. An idea that held a wild chance came to him, and, tightening his belt, he headed away from the swamp” (Connell 21). It also says “They would be on him any minute now. His mind worked frantically. He thought of a native trick he had learned in Uganda. He slid down the tree. He caught hold of a springy young sapling and to it he fastened his hunting knife, with the blade pointing down the trail; with a bit of wild grapevine he tied back the sapling. Then he ran for his life. The hounds raised their voices as they hit the fresh scent. Rainsford knew now how an animal at bay feels. He had to stop to get his breath. The baying of the hounds stopped abruptly, and Rainsford's heart stopped too. They must have reached
Richard Connell’s short story, The Most Dangerous Game, tells the story of a famous hunter named Rainsford, who falls off of a yacht and swims to an island called Ship-Trap Island. While on Ship Trap Island, Rainsford encounters a man named General Zaroff, who began hunting humans on the island after becoming bored of hunting animals. One night, Zaroff announces to Rainsford that he will be the next victim in his hunting game. Zaroff informs Rainsford that if he manages to survive for three days without being killed, then he can leave the island. Throughout the plot of this short story, there is a consistent theme of the world being composed of two classes of people: the hunters and the hunted. General Zaroff and Rainsford both find themselves to be divided into this class system, at various times during the hunting game. In this short story, Connell uses foreshadowing to portray the idea that there are two classes of people in the world: the hunters and the hunted, in relation to Rainsford and Zaroff.
Rainsford, from the beginning, reveals his arrogance to the readers. “This hot weather is making you soft, Whitney. Be a realist. The world is made up of two classes - the hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I are the hunters.” (Connell 63). The context is that Rainsford is speaking with Whitney and he believes that the animals have a sense of understanding and fear, but Rainsford does not. Rainsford is impudent towards his friend by criticizing his beliefs. He is moreover conceited when he places himself in the higher class of society. The protagonist is being insensitive to Whitney and to the living, fearful animals, commencing the separation from morality, shown throughout this short story. The antagonist, General Zaroff, numerously illustrates his hubristic personality.
In “The Most Dangerous Game”, author Richard Connell uses a variety of literary device to depict the theme. He uses the main character, Rainsford, to be the character which unfolds the theme as he goes through the experience of being treated like a wild animal and becoming the prey of another human for sport. Connell uses three literary devices frequently including foreshadowing, irony and symbolism in order to support the main theme, put yourself in the shoes of the animals you hunt.
