Adversity is the struggles people face in life. Adversity can be hard. It affects people in many different ways. Some people give up when adversity comes there way and some people take it head on. In the short stories there were many different kinds of adversity. “The Most Dangerous Game” was written by Richard Connell and “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty. In “The Sniper” the character faces adversity, because he is in a war. And he faces this problem with another armsman and he ended up killing his brother. This was bad and a rough thing to face, because he killed someone he really cared about. But he was affected in a positive way, because he swore never to pick up a gun again after that. In “The Most Dangerous Game” The character …show more content…
He went through a traumatizing thing but he still stayed strong. He never quit. He persevered and stayed strong. He found a way to calm himself down. He calms himself down by promising to never touch a gun again. And when he found out he killed his brother he showed determination by promising not to touch a gun. And he also showed enthusiasm, because he really felt like that decision to not touch a gun was the right thing. So he had passion for what he was doing. He supported himself and that is how he got through his adversity. In “The Most Dangerous Game” it states that, “Rainsford knew he could do one of two things. He could stay where he was and wait. That was suicide. He could flee. That was postponing the inevitable. For a moment he stood there, thinking. An idea that held a wild chance came to him, and, tightening his belt, he headed away from the swamp” (Connell 21). It also says “They would be on him any minute now. His mind worked frantically. He thought of a native trick he had learned in Uganda. He slid down the tree. He caught hold of a springy young sapling and to it he fastened his hunting knife, with the blade pointing down the trail; with a bit of wild grapevine he tied back the sapling. Then he ran for his life. The hounds raised their voices as they hit the fresh scent. Rainsford knew now how an animal at bay feels. He had to stop to get his breath. The baying of the hounds stopped abruptly, and Rainsford's heart stopped too. They must have reached
In the Most Dangerous Game; one of Rainsford's traps which he created to increase the likelihood of his survival, kills Ivan, “The baying of the hounds stopped abruptly, and Rainsford's heart stopped too. They must have reached the knife… he saw in the shallow valley that General Zaroff was still on his feet. But Ivan was not.” If Rainsford hadn’t of set the trap and killed Ivan, the hounds would have killed him. This shows that Rainsford is willing to kill others if it means his own survival. In a normal world, Rainsford would have never created a trap with the intent of killing a human.
In the story The Most Dangerous Game one conflict is man vs nature. Rainsford is fighting nature because he is on a ship and he came across an island. Rainsford falls overboard and has to swim for safety. “All he knew was that he was safe from his enemy, the sea and the other was weariness on him”. In order to survive rainsford hast to swim to the island and find shelter. In the conflict man vs nature this shows Rainsford bravery.
In the story, The Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford gets trapped on Ship-trap Island and has no way to get out so he needs a food source to survive. He needs to hunt for food, he can't only eat plants the whole time he is there. Before Rainsford fell off the boat, he was talking to his friend about how “the hunter had his nerve with him to tackle [the animal] with a light gun” (Connell 22). Rainsford knows when a gun is too small to hunt an animal, it seems that Rainsford clearly knows a lot about hunting, considering he has been hunting his whole life. As Rainsford has been walking around for awhile, he comes across this huge mansion, he is invited inside and as he is walking “the hall [there] were mounted heads of many animals-- lions, tigers,
Imagine that you are in North Korea being chased by a murderer and you trip and your arm gets stuck in between two rocks, to make it out alive, you would need traits to be a survivor. In the stories "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell, "My Escape From North Korea" by Hyeonseo Lee, and "Trapped" by Aron Ralston, the main characters all have traits that make them survivors. In the stories, Rainsford uses his skillfulness to survive, Lee uses her courage to survive, and Aron uses his will power to survive. When it coms to "The Most Dangerous Game", Rainsford uses his skillfulness to survive. In the "MDG", Rainsford builds three traps to try and kill Zaroff.
When Rainsford falls off the yacht he does not panic “A certain coolheadedness had come to him; it was not the first time he had been in a tight place.” He stays calm because he knows he will be able to swim better if he keeps focused, and he has experience dealing with fearful situations; if he panicked he could potentially drown. Even when staring death in the face he keeps his cool “In his hand the man held a long-barreled revolver, and he was pointing it straight at Rainsford's heart. Out of the snarl of beard two small eyes regarded Rainsford. ‘Don't be alarmed,’ said Rainsford, with a smile which he hoped was disarming.” When Rainsford first meets Ivan, instead of being paralyzed with fear he speaks calmly and in a friendly tone to avoid getting shot. He somehow keeps calm and even puts a smile on his face when the gun is pointed at him; this could save him from being killed by Ivan because he seems friendly and not threatening. Rainsford stays calm and collected instead of panicking, which could easily get him
Coupled with the last paragraph, Rainsford will have to hunt and use his skills to protect himself. Rainsford has many things to protect himself from. For example, animals, his surroundings, and other humans. Humans are the most dangerous for the reason that “‘they can reason, after a fashion so they are dangerous’” (Connell 27).
Adversity can change a person's life completely for the worse or for the better. Everyone in their life at some point will go through an adverse experience but it is how they persevere and survive that changes a person. In “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty, two snipers are battling for their life in war. In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, a man is fighting for his life as a hunter is trying to kill him. In both of these short stories adversity can be found. In “The Sniper”, two snipers are firing at each other from a distance in a war zone. One sniper gets shot and is struggling, but he creates a plan to trick the other sniper that he is dead. Then, the wounded sniper gets his chance to kill the other sniper. The wounded sniper
(6)This quote shows determination because even though he is being hunted by a human who possesses craziness, Rainsford remains calm and calms himself down which shows that he will not give up easily. (7)Possessing determination Rainsford decides to play in the game and decides not to run away while he fights in the forest. (8)Supporting this detail, Connell provides the quote “…Rainsford crouching there, could not see the general, nor could he see the pit. He lived a year in a minute” (Connell pg. 13). (9)This quote proves the determination within Rainsford because he stays right in the spot he hides in, instead of running from the challenge that Zaroff presented before him.
Presumption of one’s character, lifestyle, or troubles in life is taken from looking at that person and assuming you know all about them. In order to fully understand someone’s pain, you must endure it in their shoes. This is the theme for the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” written by Richard Connell. As Rainsford, the main character of the short story, tries to survive in the wild from a psychotic general who hunts humans as game, the reader sees his change in perspective on what it feels to be hunted. This demonstrates the theme of the short-story through the use of situational irony, man vs. man conflict, and internal conflict.
Beyond his reactive and resourceful ways of thinking, Rainsford is visibly aggressive and energetic when he has to fight instead of fleeing. He refuses to allow himself to give up and be killed by Zaroff and decides to keep on running forward. As the hunter is escaping, he says, “Nerve, nerve, nerve!” and then “forced himself on toward that gap”, where he “leaped far out into the sea.” (14). Rainsford believed that he still had enough energy left to swim in the harsh waters. As a result, he experienced a rush of adrenaline due to how
Rainsford in ‘The Most Dangerous Game,’ Della in ‘The Gift of the Magi,’ and Lizabeth in ‘Marigolds,’ are all faced with adversity in different ways. However, all three characters demonstrate that the very best way to handle adversity is by remaining valiant. In ‘The Most Dangerous Game’ Rainsford is faced with adversity when he is launched off a ship. “The cry was pinched off short as the blood-warm waters of the Caribbean Sea dosed over his head. He struggled up to the surface and tried to cry out, but the wash from the speeding yacht slapped him in the face and the salt water in his open mouth made him gag and strangle” (Connell). In ‘The Gift of the Magi’ Della faces adversity when she does not possess enough money to buy her husband a
Rainsford is an intelligent man. Early in the story, “Rainsford remembered the shots. They had come from the right, and he doggedly swam in that direction” (34). Rainsford had just fallen in the water,
According to Richard Connell, the author of “The Most Dangerous Game,” the mind needs to be completely focused to survive. “His whole idea at first was to put distance between himself and General Zaroff, and, to this end, he had plunged along, spurred on by the sharp rowels of something very like panic. Now he had got a grip on himself, had stopped, and was taking stock of himself and the situation” (Connell, IL32). Rainsford’s mind could not focus at first because he was panicking so much about the fact that he was being hunted.
The Sniper, written by Liam O’Flaherty, is a story about a Republican sniper in the Irish civil war in 1922. This story tells of a night spent on a roof looking for the enemy, the Free-Staters. In this short description of the nights events, the sniper kills 3 people; a soldier, an informer, and finally an enemy sniper on the roof across the road from him. In the end this enemy sniper turns out to be the republicans brother. This story shows the the specific characteristics a sniper must have to carry out their duty. A key moment in this text which influenced the sniper is the Civil war itself.
