Shakespeare is universally revered for his characterization of flawed and psychologically unstable protagonists. Hamlet is a crazed, murdering prince, Lear is narcissistic, senile, and a verbally abusive father, and Macbeth is a murderous traitor to his king and country. These unfavorable and evil attributes serve Shakespeare's main characters by presenting them as realistically written men, and there always seems a degree, however small, of sympathy associated with their respective downfalls and tragedies. Othello, however, is an anomaly.

Iago is the antagonist of the play, and one of the most evil Shakespearean villains. Iago is extremely clever in the way he uses unsuspecting power- especially psychological power. He gets into people’s heads in many dishonest ways- by spreading false rumours, telling lies and psychologically tricking people and secretly controlling certain situations. His power to manipulate is a key point in the play, as it results in major consequences and the deaths of some main characters. Iago’s schemes are multi-levelled- he conspires with roderigo, and makes him believe that Desdemona will take him back. On another level, he leads Othello to believe his wife is having an affair with Cassio. He uses his wife Emilia (unknown to her), to bring back the handkerchief he uses to deceive Othello. Iago is an extremely resourceful and talented man, but he uses these resources and talents in detrimental ways. Iago is constantly referred to by numerous characters as ‘honest’. He himself also refers to honesty. Numerous characters believe that they know and trust Iago and that he would not lie, nor deceive them. Iago’s soliloquies also provide invaluable insight into his wicked mind and evil schemes and plans.

The tragedy of Othello is one of the great literary works from the late playwright William Shakespeare. The play, written in 1603 during Shakespeare’s tragic period, consists of five acts. The backdrop of the tragedy centers around the cities of Venice and Cyprus when the Venetians are at war with the Turks. The play follows the story of the Moorish general Othello (who is black) and his scandalous marriage to a white Venetian woman, Desdemona. Othello’s ensign, Iago, cleverly deceives Othello that his wife is cheating on him, intending to break the Moor’s marriage apart. Sadly, Iago successfully persuades Othello that Desdemona is committing adultery with his lieutenant, resulting in the tragic event of many deaths at the end of the play. In the tragedy of Othello, Shakespeare uses conversation between Desdemona’s character and her husband in order to highlight innate misogynistic behavior in Othello’s personality.

Othello would be considered a tragic hero due to the fact that he had his entire life ahead of him, but it unfortunately falls apart because of his easy to manipulate personality, insecurities, and emotional vulnerabilities.

Though the name of the play written by William Shakespeare is called "Othello," the character Othello is not the main character, but rather Iago is. Iago is the character who drives the play, he is the one who makes things happen. Without his greed and hated, there would be no play at all. The whole play is centered around Iago's revenge and in doing so, he is willing to make other people's lives miserable. Through "Othello," Iago uses the other characters to avenge the wrong doings which Othello has inflicted upon him, and will go to any means to do so.

Verbal twists and the characters most importantly stress the act of evil. Iago, most of all is portrayed as the “villain” or “protagonist in the play. Iago goes on with his manipulative plan by planting a handkerchief in Cassio's room, and goes and tell Othello about what he has seen Cassio do. Othello becomes jealous throughout the story and begins to believe that Cassio is talking to his wife. Iago persuades Othello to come up with a master plan to kill Cassio and Desdemona.
