The Seminole Indian Tribe

Cherokee Indians have been around for many years, but when the topic of Native Americans is discussed it is only about the struggles and hardships they went through but never their actual culture of how and where they originated or how they came to be. There are many interesting things to learn about Cherokee Indians such as their heritage, religion, language, and their traditional songs, dances, and food.

Vires, a Latin term, on base represents strength; force; and power. However, through the realm of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, Vires epitomizes standing tall and remaining “Unconquered”. During the Seminole Wars many Seminoles were forced out of their homes and pushed into smaller groups around the state, notably around the Mississippi River. Though few Seminoles had still remained in Florida leading to the rich culture we have the privilege of seeing represented around the Florida State community. The Seminole Indians have lived in what we now call Florida since about 10,000 BC so it would be fair to assume their culture was in a way born out of the land they live on. They live in Florida’s everglades and hunt out of the swamp. The Seminoles were at one time many tribes they only joined into one after we forced them of their land and then gave them some back years later. Florida’s geography and climate affect several major parts of their culture including food, clothing, and housing.

The Sioux and Chippewa Indian tribes’ have a drastically different way of living compared to what other people are accustomed to in terms of their history, clothing, tools, and weapons needed for survival. The Sioux Indians were originally from Asia, but migrated to America about 30,000 years ago. Their long, straight jet-black hair resembles that of the Asian descendants. The Sioux tribes were located in The Great Plains, which consists of 7 different states Minnesota, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota; however, they were also known to live in parts of Nebraska, Illinois, and Montana. “The name Sioux is an abbreviation of Nadouessioux. (Britannica) The name was given to them by the Ojibwa (Chippewa). Sioux means, “Little snake”. The Sioux tended to follow the pattern of the buffalo, which is why they are found in multiple locations.

In the 1700's many Natives Americans from Georgia and Florida came to gather looking for protection. At the beginning they were differentiated for their cultures, but little by little they cultures blend until forming the Seminole. Over the next century other Native Americans and even African Americans escaping from slavery cross the border to join the seminole looking for protection.

Reservation life was difficult. When the Seminoles got to the reservation there was barely any tents this was tough because the season was winter When the Seminole arrived at the reservation food was scarce. There was not enough blankets to keep them warm since it was the winter. There was barely any shoes so they had to walk barefoot the whole way to the reservation. There wasn’t enough winter clothes to keep them warm or other supplies they needed. There was heavy rain and snow. The weather conditions were tough to live in

The Wichita is a tribe that belongs to a small tribe about three hundred and twenty who live in Oklahoma. They are a tribe of Native Americans who were discovered by the Coronado expedition. Like other Native American tribes the Wichita people have their own language, culture and both, social and legal customs. They refer to themselves as Kitikitish which can be taken literally to mean raccoon eyelids. But signifies a tattooed eyelid which is from a former custom among men where they tattooed lines upon their eyelids. Women however tattoo lines upon the chin and among older women there are those with tattooed designs all over their breasts. The Wichita people were primarily sedentary interested in hunting and farming. The men hunted and went for wars for the protection of their families while women farmed and raised children.

Who is a Seminole and who decides? Today, Abraham may not qualify to be a citizen of his own nation, one he fought so hard to create. The modern practice is for Indian nations to have Constitutions to address citizenship. The Seminole Nation may have had its nationhood status helped from the promises in Jesup’s Capitulation, and despite Creek and federal pressures that considered Seminoles part of the greater Creek nation. The sovereign Miami Tribe of Oklahoma is based in Miami, Oklahoma in the northeastern corner of the state. Originating out of the Great Lakes region, the Miami Tribe was forced to move to Kansas and then later to Oklahoma. The population of the community is 4,440 peoples spread across the country and world. A unique thing about the Miami Tribe is despite their small size and diverse geographical locations these people share a special connection. The Miami Tribe values a strong community life, tribe benefits, and opportunities for it’s people. These values explain what it means to be of Miami decent in and out of the community.

The Cherokee tribe is known as one of the earliest and largest Indian tribe in North America. They are federally recognized even today among several states(museum). While they slowly became Americanized by the Europeans who came over to America, some still practice their typical Indian rituals publicly today. Most converted to Christianity and their government in Oklahoma is based off the American government with three branches. One would believe that the Trail of Tears could have completely vanquished these Indians but many made it through the horrendous trial and kept the Indian bloodline going even present day (Conley).

Have you ever heard of the Cherokee Indians? Sure you have! Just as a reminder, they are the biggest tribe, and most known of out of all the Indian tribes there has ever been in the southeast. They are very important to American History and helped shaped us to be the Americans we are today, which is clearly what I 'll be explaining in this paper.
