Police don’t know what triggered the events that happened that day, but they do that he had a lot of mental diseases and he was also anorexic. Police do know that he planned the event out because he studied books about mass murders and played video games on school shootings. American society is prone to violence and no one is safe from the possibility of becoming a victim to crime. Every day the news covers stories that is filled with public violence or the brutal death of someone. Some believe that people commit crimes with the belief that they will not get caught. Other expect the violence and have become resilient to bad news. Society wants to understand the insanity of criminals. Many perpetrators kill themselves after taking the lives of others, therefore, the idea of questioning them or assessing them to acquire reasoning that will define their actions are forfeited. The Sandy Hook shooting in Newtown, Massachusetts was one of the worst school shootings in recent memory and there were changes and precautions in security in the U.S., in schools and out. After the shooting, not just the Newtown School District changed their security, but so did most of the country. Vice President of the NRA Wayne LePierre started a movement so that there could be trained and armed volunteers in 100,000 schools.

Not one person from Sandy Hook, Connecticut ever thought this sort of event would ever happen. On December 14, 2012, 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally shot twenty children and six adult staff members in a mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Before the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Lanza shot and killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, at his home in Newtown, Connecticut. After the shooting, Lanza successfully committed suicide before he was detained. Which left, the state, officials, and the entire country to question why Lanza would do such a horrible act of violence to innocent children and staff members of the school. To be afraid is no less an innate behavior than to be hungry. To find relief we look to fill ourselves with comfort and content, but there will always be hunger, and there will always be fear. We as human beings cannot control our surroundings, and with them the fear that hides underneath and in-between. We cannot escape the feeling of fear or its constant pestering, but we may control how we react to it. Those affected by the unspeakable events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December of 2012 have come face to face with terror, many sweet and innocent souls coming so close as to shake hands with death. Closely following responses of differing viewpoint and opinion ensued, regarding what had happened and what is to be done in the future.

On a tragic December day many families saw their children for the last time. They would soon find out that their children’s school had been the site of a school shooting. Adam Lanza killed many innocent lives and society could possibly benefit from these harsh actions. What would you do if you never saw your family again? All the families of the victims are still mourning after almost 2 years. Although the Sandy Hook shooting was a tragic day in history, society can benefit from this.

The events of the San Bernardino shooting were a tragedy. 14 people were killed, and another 22 were injured when a married terrorist couple staged an attack on a Christmas party. This was an unmitigated catastrophe, but it spawned one of the most important security debates in recent memory. The FBI wanted to unlock one of the suspects phones, but were unable to do so because of security measures on the phone. The FBI wanted to brute force the password lock on the iPhone, but device would wipe itself after 10 failed attempts to unlock the iPhone. Thus, the FBI asked Apple to create an intentionally insecure iOS update, specifically for this iPhone, in order to bypass the security restrictions. Apple disagreed with the FBI, and tried to avoid helping the FBI in such a way, arguing it would undermine the purpose of security itself. Overall, Apple has the best argument, both legally and as a matter of public policy.

In February 2012, Thomas Lane shot three people at the Ohio Chardon High School. Lane had stolen the 22-caliber handgun from his uncle, who purchased it legally. In October 2011, eight people were killed by Scott Evans Dekraai in Seal Beach, California. He used a number of different guns, all legally purchased. He had a restraining order that had banned him from purchasing any guns just a year earlier, but it had expired by the time of the shooting, allowing him to legally purchase his guns. In July 2012, James Holmes killed 12 people in Aurora, Colorado at a movie theater. He had legally purchased several guns, all from licensed dealers, passing background checks for each. Not a single gun, from any of these men, was bought illegally and in each case the killer completely followed the law. On November 5, 2009, the public gained knowledge about an incident that took place at an U.S. Army installation. Maj. Nidal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, fatally shot 13 people and injured more than 30 others. He was facing a deployment to one of the many war zones overseas (McFadden, 2009). There are many reports about this incident and what actually took place. From what I’ve gathered, Hasan went into a processing center where soldiers go before and after they come back from deployment. After Hasan’s shooting rampage, he was finally stopped when Army Military Police (MP) officers shot him a total of four times. He is now paralyzed from the waist down due to the shooting. The Fort Hood shooting marked the worst shooting ever to take place on a military installation state side, to record. There was almost no structural damage because he used hand guns instead of bombs, or what we call weapons of mass destruction.

On April 16, 2007, one of the most tragic incidents in the United States occurred on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. Seung- Hui Cho, a senior at Virginia Tech ruthlessly murdered 32 people and wounded 17 others through the usage of firearms in two separate attacks. This incident is considered the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in the history of America. While people still mourn and pray for the victims, this shooting also led to many controversies. Till this day, Cho’s access to firearm and Virginia Tech’s security hazard remains to be controversial. The motive and cause of Cho’s action and what the school could have done in order to prevent this tragic incident will be addressed.

Imagine a mother waiting for her daughter to return from school, imagine a father watching other families reunite, and imagine a brother searching for his sister. The sound of opened gunfire rang out loud enough to echo the hall of every high school in the United States. Rachel was a young woman who spent her 17 years of life trying to have an impact on the world. She went out of her way to make other students feel safe and included. Just the simple act of inviting someone to sit at her lunch table or stopping an act of bullying made the day of those around her. Rachel believed that her hands, “…will someday touch millions of people’s hearts,” and in her honor, the Rachel’s Challenge organization was founded. At my former high school, Winslow Township High School (WTHS), the Rachel’s Challenge program was run by Ms. Chantel Smith and a major part of this club was an event in the gymnasium every other year called “Chain Reaction.” In my junior year I was invited to go to the event and it transformed my life for the better.
