What expert and professional sources have you found in these first three weeks that aid your efforts in this Religious Quest? The internet has served as a great help in performing research for this class. Since the beginning of this course, not a single day has gone by, that I have not used the internet as a source or reference for a posting or a class assignment. The book used in the course of our study, The Sacred Quest: An Invitation to the study of Religion, has been the most valuable book reference during this first half of the course. With its insight and user friendly approach, it is a book that tends to make the challenging task of religion not such a difficult quest to endure.
Aside from book sources, I have also used the Internet

Prior to this class, I was one of the many students who confused the terms theology and religion. I wasn’t quite certain of the true meanings of the two terms. In our book, The Sacred Quest : An Invitation to the study of Religion, I was able to find a text reading from chapter four to aid in attempting to answer this question for this assignment. “One of the most useful definitions of theology, formulated by Anselm of Canterbury in the middle ages, is “faith seeking understanding.” Note the sequence in that definition: one first believes, and then seeks understanding (not proof!)” (p. 65). To be truthful, I didn’t quite grasp the meaning of this reading. It wasn’t until I conducted some research for this assignment that I was able to discover an explanation that differentiated the two terms and which actually made sense to me. This explanation acquired from the website differencebetween.com is how it finally made sense to …show more content…
This was the hardest question of the assignment for me. I am still not quite sure if my answer to this question will be correct, but this is what I deem is an appropriate answer to this question. The language of religion is that of what is believed to be “sacred”. This would be anything or anyone that is held as “sacred” from a religious perspective. From a religious perspective, I mean that it has to be linked to religious ways of belief, thought and behavior. The language of religion, the “sacred”, can be represented in various ways. It can be symbolized through visual language, such as art. It can be amplified through oral language such as stories or myths. It can even be symbolized in written form, such as scriptures. The “sacred”, the language of religion can be regarded through many
There will be 7 Discussion Board Forums throughout this course. You are required to provide a thread in response to the provided topic for each forum. Each thread is to be 150–200 words, cite at least 2 sources, and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, you are required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 125–150 words and must cite at least 2 sources. Acceptable sources include the textbook, peer-reviewed journal articles, government sources, professional association websites, etc. Each discussion will also require a biblical reference/quote (which is not a part of the original source count).
In The Sacred Quest, University of Notre Dame professor Lawrence Cunningham attempts the search for a coherent definition of religion. While he doesn’t strive for a one-sentence interpretation of what indicates a real, organized religion, he arrives on several elements and functions to give meaning to his definition. To Cunningham, there are five elements that make up a religion: belief, feeling, action, individual and community aspects, and values. Cunningham argues that these five elements exists in order to explain what could not otherwise be explained, enable people to sustain hope in the face of difficult experiences, and provide ways of thinking that provide goals and respond to “great problems” in life (158). All of these aspects work

This will be based on the chapter 4 Religion as "Truth-Claims", posted on Blackboard. First of all, Dianne L. Oliver makes a preface about her writings saying that religions claim to get the truth, and followers of diverse religions say that their truth is the only one true, and cannot be compare with any other. Also, she remarks that many of those religion followers use violence to uphold their own version of truth. Moreover, she let us know that she is going to consider the "True-Claims" of different religions, and show how those claims can influence the practices, behaviors, and ideas of religion followers. Next to the introduction, she considers that religion is very essential for understanding the fundamental questions in our daily lives.
The small book A little exercise for young theologians is an opening lecture to students of theology given by theologian Helmut Thielicke. This book is especially important for students who are beginning their training in theology, but it also is crucial for those who are seasoned students of theology as it is a good reminder of what students need to know when studying the nature and character of God. Thielicke is brief in the lecture, but he is profound in what he says. It is an important lecture for any student of theology. This review will summarize the lecture while making critiques and provide a conclusion.
Bulmer, P., & Doret, K. (2008). EXCEL HSC - STUDIES OF RELIGION I AND II STUDY GUIDE . Excel.
The first couple of chapters in this selection was very interesting in that we see how the ways of the world slowly began to overcome the righteousness of the people. Although they did not teach contrary to the direct word of God, they did claim to have another system of beliefs that so happened to be different the standard system of beliefs. This so closely follows current day problems; some religious groups were simply formed to go contrary to the normal system of beliefs and sometimes become hostile to the traditional believers.
What is religion? Why is it so controversial? What is the significance of religion? These are some of the questions that are encountered when studying religions. Finding the answer, however, is not as simple as it may seem. In fact, there are many different approaches to studying religions. Some of these techniques include the religious method, the phenomenological method, and the historical method.
One of the strengths of this book is its deliverance of information through historical research dating back around two thousand years ago. Providing interesting ideas that remove the veil glorifying Jesus Christ.
Early religions have been studied very extensively, and continue to be a predominant topic among many scholars and historians. This could be due to the fact that there are so many different types of religious, and each religion having their own written guidelines, but yet most are very closely related. Whither looking at primary sources or secondary, one thing is for sure, and that is that the early religions can often be confused due to their closeness in nature. This Bibliographic essay will hopefully be helpful when sorting through information in order to write an exceptional paper.
Religion has existed for countless centuries. Christianity is one of the major religions in this world, which had people be criticized, battle in wars, and killed for, but it still survived to this day. The purpose of this paper is to study the source of the religion, recognize the teachings, observe its spread throughout the world, and to identify how it stands among people today. Approaching this paper by a factual report I will explain these major points and why we need to know about this religion and other religions that existed before our generation.
The book answers the readers religious questions as well as historical questions. In those answers the reader is able to prosper as a reader and a person. The difficulty of the reading pushes and challenges the reader to dig for understanding, a skill that will be valuable in one’s educational future. This book doesn’t just conquer faith questions it builds a strong foundation for one’s continued growth in their
World religion includes a wide-ranging and rather an influential spectrum. Therefore, studying world religion allows a person to enrich his or her own experience through several aspects of its study. This week’s assignment includes ten reasons that studying world religion remains important. Of the ten articulated reasons, I chose intellectual questioning as my greatest motivation for the study, and appreciation for the arts as the least significant factor associated with the study of religion (Molloy, 2010).
The Difference of faith and religion. Faith is what people think supernatural terms as in faith in God. Faith is from a more naturalistic psychological perspective is merely the innate drive to search for meaning purpose and significance. Religion is to the community of people who share similar beliefs and who work together to provide both support for going deeper into those beliefs and accountability for living up to those beliefs. What i think is the difference between faith and religion is that faith is what you belief in and religion is the real thing where you go to church and practice you religion. These two authors worked both of there lives to write about faith and religion.
During this course, I have learned about several different religions and philosophies. Being that I am a practicing Catholic, I have chosen to write what I learned about Christianity and Judaism. Being born and raised Catholic I know quite a bit about Catholicism and Christianity in general however, I never know too much about other Christian denominations. Judaism is the next religion I feel I know a little bit about based on my Catholic upbringing. So, with believing I knew a lot about these two religions I was surprised at what I learned by studying them in class. As I write about these two religions I will include elements that I took from the religions and incorporated them into my “created” religion based on Friends.
