Patriots are colonists that are fighting back against the British rule. In the diary of Sam Adams, a Patriot that was fighting back against the British loyalists, he says that a large group of the 29th regiment of British soldiers was marching down the streets of Boston. The merciless troops were heavily armed and were shouting at the townspeople and violently attacked colonists. Most colonists didn’t even have a stick in their hands to defend themselves with. The patriots were the people who believed that the colonies were better off on their own. These personalities were best exemplified in groups such as the Sons of Liberty and the Daughters of Liberty. These groups were dedicated to protesting the unfair taxation and laws by boycotting British goods and producing their own instead. Many loyalist were high ranking officials who had a better connection to Great Britain and believed that colonist were being treated fairly. The events surrounding the Boston Massacre exposed sharp divisions in the British colonies in North America with two distinct rival groups emerging, namely, the Loyalists and Patriots. The Loyalists were dedicated supporters of the British Crown whereas the Patriots were independence-minded colonists keen to break away from English rule. As a result, both feuding parties would seek to promote their own agenda without regard for core values such as accuracy and impartiality.

If you were a loyalist you were hated by the patriots. The patriots were people who wanted to gain independence from Britain. U.S.history.org states, "Patriots subjected loyalists to public humiliation and violence. Many loyalists found their property vandalized, looted, and burned." This shows that the colonists' who were loyalists had a tough life during the American Revolution. So, it wasn't a smart choice to become a loyalist during that time period.

These were the “anti-British”. They were fighting for the people’s independence. The next category consisted of the people who were against our independence. They were called Loyalists. In the year 1764, King George III of Great Britain placed taxes on colonial America causing anger to flourish within the colonies resulting in their rebellion from the British. One-third of the colony wanted independence from Great Britain, the Patriots, while another third decided to stay loyal to the British, the loyalists/tories. The Patriots soon went to war with Britain for their independence, but the rest of the colony was reluctant to join the Patriots’ cause for various reasons. The loyalists were hesitant to join the American Revolution because of the nonideal living location and the British protected them when no one else would.

Back then to be a elite or succesful businessmen one of the most important things you needed was to have money, so that way you were a land owner and you could support your family. The Loyalists were taxing 1/3 of what the Patriots earned in a year, and the taxation even went up if you like tea which was another 1/5 of what the Americans/Loyalists earned. Patrick Henry's "no taxation without representation" speech really got the colonists to want to rebel against the British. so the British gave them the right to have a representative before they tax which kind of made the situation better. During the American Revolution, people had to decide which side to support. Colonists for independence from England were usually called revolutionaries or whigs. But some Americans thought that to break away from the British government would not be right; they usually were called loyalists or tories.

This response to the war helped Pitt, as he was trying to prevent revolution from happening in Britain. There was a loyalist riot in 1794 in Manchester where chants about church and kings were to be heard, subsequently ‘Church and King’ clubs formed. The loyalists advertised their cause through pamphlets that supported the king. Suppport for the king spread, the government were extremely happy with the outcome, they even allowed and encourages a loyalist militia to form and by 1800 there were 100,000 members. This show of support for the king that followed the war with France was a strong opponent against the radicals.

The Patriots consist of (Revolutionaries, Continentals, Rebels, or American Whigs) were formed during July 1776 when the thirteen colonies gather together to fend off the British and fight for their independence from the British. The British causes problem for the colonist by taxing them and treated them poorly. However, there are two different types of Patriots that had have fought in the war. The loyalist also called Tories fought for the British and against the Patriots while the Patriots fought against the British and the Tories. The war between the Patriots and Tories lead to conflicts that soon changes the way colonist treat each other.

The war seemed to separate the colonists into three separate groups. Ones that were loyal to Britain, which were called “loyalists”. Most loyalists had “business ties” with Britain and saw being on Britain’s side of the war as being “defenders”. While other loyalists despised those that rebelled and assumed their reason to rebel was to obtain more money from the empire. The second group was with George Washington called the “Patriots”, who were fighting for the freedom from Britain, and the third group were people that were trying to go about their lives and not get involved in the war. Though slaves were asked to participate in the war, most went to Britain’s side in exchange for freedom.
